“Aurelie Werner”: Intersections Between Hysteria and the Jewish Woman’s Assessment of Jewishness in the late 19th Century

Aurelie Werner is a story written by Sara Hirsch Guggenheim, a prominent neo-Orthodox writer in late 19th century Germany. This article analyzes the portrayal of Jewish women during this period, and the ways in which women responded to and coped with exclusion and prejudice. Specifically, Aurelie Werner portrays a young woman\u27s experience of anxiety and uncontrolled emotion as she discerns her place in society as a Jew and as a woman. In the early 20th century, these symptoms would be designated as \u27hysteric\u27 in nature, and would often be used to describe the demeanor of Jewish women as they grappled with Jewish identity in a largely antisemitic society. Aurelie\u27s hysteria is representative of the Jewish woman\u27s lack of control, which is grounded in not having the power or status to control one\u27s own identity

Hepatitis B immunisation : a survey of surgeons and theatre nurses

Acute viral hepatitis remains a serious condition. Its long-term sequelae include cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Health workers constitute a high-risk group for contracting hepatitis B. A group of clinicians associated with invasive procedures and nurses working in operating theatres were invited to answer a confidential questionnaire concerning hepatitis B immunisation and the use of protective measures. A self-administered confidential questionnaire was sent to 152 clinicians and 97 theatre nurses, of whom 82 and 74 respectively responded, giving an overall response rate of 63 %. Whilst 91% of respondents considered their speciality as being of high risk for hepatitis B only 63% of them were fully immunised and of these only 51% had had their immunity tested. Out of those who checked their antibody status 19% did so following a needle stick injury. 60% of our respondents had had a needle stick injury over the past year. Even so barrier precaution techniques were used infrequently with only 17% always or at least frequently using double gloving and 10% wearing a visor during operations. Some respondents also commented on the poor availability of resources such as impermeable gowns or blunt needles which are established precautions against contamination from hepatitis B.peer-reviewe

Magnetism of the LTT phase of Eu doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The ESR signal of Gd spin probes (0.5 at %) as well as the static normal state susceptibility of Eu (J(Eu^{3+})=0) doped La_{2-x-y}Sr_xEu_yCuO_4 reveal pronounced changes of the Cu magnetism at the structural transition from the orthorhombic to the low temperature tetragonal phase for all non-superconducting compositions. Both a jumplike decrease of \chi as well as the ESR data show an increase of the in-plane magnetic correlation length in the LTT phase. From the Gd^{3+} ESR linewidth we find that for specific Eu and Sr concentrations in the LTT phase the correlation length increases up to more than 100 lattice constants and the fluctuation frequency of the CuO_2 spin system slows down to 10^{10}- 10^{11}sec^{-1}. However, there is no static order above T ~ 8K in contrast to the LTT phase of Nd doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 with pinned stripe correlations.Comment: 7 pages, RevTex, 3 eps figures.
