On the poverty of a priorism: technology, surveillance in the workplace and employee responses
Many debates about surveillance at work are framed by a set of a priori assumptions about the nature of the employment relationship that inhibits efforts to understand the complexity of employee responses to the spread of new technology at work. In particular, the debate about the prevalence of resistance is hamstrung from the outset by the assumption that all apparently non-compliant acts, whether intentional or not, are to be counted as acts of resistance. Against this background this paper seeks to redress the balance by reviewing results from an ethnographic study of surveillance-capable technologies in a number of British workplaces. It argues for greater attention to be paid to the empirical character of the social relations at work in and through which technologies are deployed and in the context of which employee responses are played out
Extracting surface representations from rim curves
LNCS v. 3852 is the conference proceedings of ACCV 2006In this paper, we design and implement a novel method for constructing a mixed triangle/quadrangle mesh from the 3D space curves (rims) estimated from the profiles of an object in an image sequence without knowing the original 3D topology of the object. To this aim, a contour data structure for representing visual hull, which is different from that for CT/MRI, is introduced. In this paper, we (1) solve the "branching structure" problem by introducing some additional "directed edge", and (2) extract a triangle/ quadrangle closed mesh from the contour structure with an algorithm based on dynamic programming. GPU enabled real-time optical frequency comb spectroscopy and photonic readout
We describe a GPU-enabled approach for real-time optical frequency comb
spectroscopy in which data is recorded, Fourier transformed, normalized, and
fit at data rates up to 2.2 GB/s. As an initial demonstration we have applied
this approach to rapidly interrogate the motion of an optomechanical
accelerometer through the use of an electro-optic frequency comb. However, we
note that this approach is readily amenable to both self-heterodyne and dual
comb spectrometers for molecular spectroscopy as well as photonic readout where
the approach's agility, speed, and simplicity are expected to enable future
improvements and applications
Two-photon spin injection in semiconductors
A comparison is made between the degree of spin polarization of electrons
excited by one- and two-photon absorption of circularly polarized light in bulk
zincblende semiconductors. Time- and polarization-resolved experiments in
(001)-oriented GaAs reveal an initial degree of spin polarization of 49% for
both one- and two-photon spin injection at wavelengths of 775 and 1550 nm, in
agreement with theory. The macroscopic symmetry and microscopic theory for
two-photon spin injection are reviewed, and the latter is generalized to
account for spin-splitting of the bands. The degree of spin polarization of
one- and two-photon optical orientation need not be equal, as shown by
calculations of spectra for GaAs, InP, GaSb, InSb, and ZnSe using a 14x14 k.p
Hamiltonian including remote band effects. By including the higher conduction
bands in the calculation, cubic anisotropy and the role of allowed-allowed
transitions can be investigated. The allowed-allowed transitions do not
conserve angular momentum and can cause a high degree of spin polarization
close to the band edge; a value of 78% is calculated in GaSb, but by varying
the material parameters it could be as high as 100%. The selection rules for
spin injection from allowed-allowed transitions are presented, and interband
spin-orbit coupling is found to play an important role.Comment: 12 pages including 7 figure
Investigating an Inverse Finite Element Approach for Characterising Soft Materials
ABSTRACT Soft materials, such as soft biological tissue and soft silicone rubber, are non-linear materials which require the classical uniaxial and biaxial tensile testing methods for characterisation. Unfortunately, in special cases, such as for soft biological tissue, the samples are smaller than 10 mm χ 10 mm in size and these classical tensile testing methods produce unwanted stress and strain gradients due to the fastening techniques associated with these methods. Micro-indentation is proposed as an alternative method for characterising soft materials. Using inverse Finite Element (FE) analysis and a known Mooney-Rivlin three parameter material model, six different micro-indentation tests were proposed. A theoretical approach was used to determine which indentation test best characterised a silicone sample, by using two FE models. The results showed that microindentation is capable of characterising a soft material in ideal conditions with a cylindrical indenter applied in a diagonal orientation over the sample, as the best indentation method. Finally, it was observed that the material model can either match the displacements with the smallest objective function or the stress vs. stretch curve can be matched to 99 % over the whole stretch range but not both simultaneously. Agile chip-scale electro-optic frequency comb spectrometer with millivolt drive voltages
Here, we present an on-chip spectrometer that leverages an integrated
thin-film lithium niobate modulator to produce a frequency-agile electro-optic
frequency comb for interrogating chip-scale temperature and acceleration
sensors. The low half-wave voltage, , of the modulators and the
chirped comb process allows for ultralow radiofrequency drive voltages, which
are as much as seven orders of magnitude less than the lowest found in the
literature and are generated using a chip-scale, microcontroller-driven direct
digital synthesizer. The on-chip comb spectrometer is able to simultaneously
interrogate both the on-chip temperature sensor and an off-chip,
microfabricated optomechanical accelerometer with cutting-edge sensitivities of
and , respectively.
Notable strengths of this platform include the frequency agility of the optical
frequency combs, ultralow radiofrequency power requirements and compatibility
with a broad range of existing photonic integrated circuit technologies.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

Improving teaching: Enhancing ways of being university teachers
My aim in this paper is to theorize my teaching in a course for experienced university teachers, in a context of increased attention to such courses. My focus in the course is transforming and enhancing ways of being university teachers, through integrating knowing, acting and being. In other words, epistemology is not seen as an end in itself, but rather it is in the service of ontology. In the paper, I explore and illustrate how this focus on ontology is enacted in the course
Massive multiplication of genome and ribosomes in dormant cells (akinetes) of Aphanizomenon ovalisporum (Cyanobacteria)

Development of akinetes from vegetative cells is a process that involves morphological and biochemical modifications. Here we applied a single cell approach to quantify genome and ribosome content of akinetes and vegetative cells in Aphanizomenon ovalisporum (Cyanobacteria). Vegetative cells of A. ovalisporum were naturally polyploid and contained on average 8 genome copies per cell. However, the chromosomal content of akinetes increased up to 450 copies, with an average value of 119 genome copies per akinete, 15 fold higher that in vegetative cells. Based on fluorescence in situ hybridization with a probe targeting 16S rRNA and detection with confocal laser scanning microscopy we conclude that ribosomes accumulated in akinetes to a higher level than that found in vegetative cells. We further present evidence that this massive accumulation of nucleic acids in akinetes is likely supported by phosphate supplied from inorganic polyphosphate bodies that were abundantly present in vegetative cells, but notably absent from akinetes. These results are interpreted in the context of cellular investments for proliferation following long term dormancy, as the high nucleic acid content would provide the basis for extended survival, rapid resumption of metabolic activity and cell division upon germination.Supported by the Gruss Lipper Foundation research award (AS).
