    Face to Face in Ireland

    Get PDF
While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Brenna Patterson describes her observations during her study abroad program at the National University of Ireland in Galway

Examines the implementation of a federal government/local joint scholarship initiative for underserved youth. Includes a chronicle of activities, profiles of scholarship families, and an outline of lessons learned during the first year of the program

    The Lombardy Health Care System

    Get PDF
In the very recent past, the Lombardy health care system - established on the quasi-market model – has caught the interest of researchers and politicians in different OECD countries1. The merits of the model, compared to other Italian regional models, are the control of health care spending and the balanced budget, in a frame of good quality of services and patient choice. This paper stems from a literature review and tries to analyse the evolution of this regional system, the institutional path that brought to the implementation of the model, its theoretical basis, its merits and criticism. The period considered ranges from 1997, when the reform was enacted, to 2010.quasi-market, health care system, Italian NHS reforms.

Investigation of Quality Control and Analysis for Small Breweries

    Get PDF
Small breweries have become a growing trend in the Pacific Northwest, as well as nationwide. Many microbreweries lack the advantages large breweries have (time, space, and money) when it comes to testing their beer in regards to quality analysis and control. The objectives of this study were to modify and develop QA/QC protocols from the American Society of Brewing Chemists Methods for Craft Breweries (ASBC) for use in classrooms or small breweries. This work focused on revising methods for international bitterness units (IBU), alcohol by volume (ABV), and standard reference method (SRM) for beer. Samples were donated from local breweries and analyzed using the standard operating procedures (SOP) developed in the study. Instrumentation included UV-Vis spectroscopy and gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector

The Gamow-Teller response within Skyrme random-phase approximation plus particle-vibration coupling

Although many random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations of the Gamow-Teller (GT) response exist, this is not the case for calculations going beyond the mean-field approximation. We apply a consistent model that includes the coupling of the GT resonance to low-lying vibrations, to nuclei of the fpfp shell. Among other motivations, our goal is to see if the particle-vibration coupling can redistribute the low-lying GT+^+ strength that is relevant for electron-capture processes in core-collapse supernova. We conclude that the lowering and fragmentation of that strength are consistent with the experimental findings and validate our model. However, the particle-vibration coupling cannot account for the quenching of the total value of the low-lying strength.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figure
