    Adaptive noise cancelling applied to machine condition monitoring

    Includes bibliography.The objective of this thesis is to determine whether Adaptive Noise Cancelling can be used successfully in determining the state of machine elements. In addition, this thesis was used to gain experience in real-time computing. This was done by designing and building a real-time machine monitoring package using an IBM PC and a TMS 320C25 digital signal-processing chip manufactured by Texas Instruments. To determine which adaptive algorithm should be used in the package, experiments were carried out on a computer with different types of adaptive noise cancelling algorithms, the two main ones being the Least-Mean-Squares (LMS) and Recursive-Least-Squares (RLS) algorithms

    Beyond rules: How institutional cultures and climate governance interact

    Institutions have a central role in climate change governance. But while there is a flourishing literature on institutions' formal rules, processes, and organizational forms, scholars lament a relative lack of attention to institutions' informal side; their cultures. It is important to study institutions' cultures because it is through culture that people relate to institutional norms and rules in taking climate action. This review uncovers what work has been done on institutional cultures and climate change, discerns common themes around which this scholarship coheres, and advances and argument for why institutional cultures matter. We employed a systematic literature review to assemble a set of 54 articles with a shared concern for how climate change and institutional cultures concurrently affect each other. The articles provided evidence of a nascent field, emerging over the past 5–10 years and fragmented across literatures. This field draws on diverse concepts of institutionalism for revealing quite different expressions of culture, and is mostly grounded in empirical studies. These disparate studies compellingly demonstrate, from different perspectives, that institutional cultures do indeed matter for implementing climate governance. Indeed, the articles converge in providing empirical evidence of eight key sites of interaction between climate change and institutional cultures: worldviews, values, logics, gender, risk acceptance, objects, power, and relationality. These eight sites are important foci for examining and effecting changes to institutions and their cultures; showing how institutional cultures shape responses to climate change, and how climate change shapes institutional cultures.publishedVersio

    Paraneoplastic Necrotizing Myopathy with a Mild Inflammatory Component: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Inflammatory myopathies such as dermatomyositis and polymyositis are well-recognized paraneoplastic syndromes. Little is known, however, about necrotizing myopathies in association with cancer. We here describe a case of paraneoplastic necrotizing myopathy with a mild inflammatory infiltrate in a patient with adenocarcinoma. After the rapid development of a severe, disabling muscle weakness, the patient experienced near complete recovery within 4 months under oral prednisone treatment.     The Outcomes of Endoanal Ultrasound and Three-Dimensional, High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry do not Predict Fecal Incontinence

    Endoanal ultrasound (EUS) is the gold standard for diagnosing anal sphincter defects often seen in patients with fecal incontinence (FI). Threedimensional, high-resolution anorectal manometry (3D-HRARM) is a newer technique that might also be used to diagnose sphincter defects. We aimed to investigate whether FI is associated with anal sphincter defects detected by EUS and 3D-HRARM. Retrospectively, we included all adult patients who had undergone EUS and 3D-HRARM for FI, between January 2012 and February 2015 (N = 37). During 3D-HRARM, the presence of sphincter defects was examined in rest and during maximal anal sphincter contraction. All patients also underwent a balloon retention test to objectively determine whether they suffered from FI for solid stool. Of the 37 patients, 12 patients (32%) suffered from FI. The presence of a sphincter defect detected with EUS, and with 3D-HRARM during contraction, was not associated with the prevalence of FI and no significant correlations were found between these variables. The presence of a sphincter defect, detected by 3D-HRARM in rest, was negatively correlated with the presence of FI (rs -.372, P = .024). Moreover, the prevalence of sphincter defects was lower in patients with FI, detected by 3D-HRARM in rest, than in patients without FI (13% versus 88%, P = .035). FI is not associated with anal sphincter defects detected by EUS and 3D-HRARM. The outcomes of EUS and 3D-HRARM do not thus predict the presence of FI. Instead, extensive anorectal function tests should be performed to form a complete picture of a patient’s anorectal functions and to determine the underlying causes of FI

    Endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced release and binding of calreticulin from human ovarian cancer cells

    BACKGROUND: Calreticulin (CRT) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperone, but can appear surface bound on cancers cells, including ovarian cancers (OC). We investigated at what stage of cell viability, CRT appeared associated with surface of human OC cells. CRT on pre-apoptotic tumour cells is thought to initiate their eradication via a process termed immunogenic cell death (ICD). METHODS: We treated OC cells with the chemotherapeutic-doxorubicin (DX) known to induce translocation of CRT to some tumour cell surfaces, with and without the ER stressor-thapsigargin (TG)-and/or an ER stress inhibitor-TUDCA. We monitored translocation/release of CRT in pre-apoptotic cells by flow cytometry, immunoblotting and ELISA. We investigated the difference in binding of FITC-CRT to pre-apoptotic, apoptotic and necrotic cells and the ability of extracellular CRT to generate immature dendritic cells from THP-1 monocytes. RESULTS: Dx-treatment increased endogenously released CRT and extracellular FITC_CRT binding to human pre-apoptotic OC cells. DX and TG also promoted cell death in OC cells which also increased CRT release. These cellular responses were significantly inhibited by TUDCA, suggesting that ER stress is partially responsible for the changes in CRT cellular distribution. Extracellular CRT induces maturation of THP-1 towards a imDC phenotype, an important component of ICD. CONCLUSION: Collectively, these cellular responses suggest that ER stress is partially responsible for the changes in CRT cellular distribution. ER-stress regulates in part the release and binding of CRT to human OC cells where it may play a role in ICD

    Seasonal Variations in Temperature–Suicide Associations across South Korea

    South Korea has among the highest rates of suicide in the world, and previous research suggests that suicide frequency increases with anomalously high temperatures, possibly as a result of increased sunshine. However, it is unclear whether this temperature–suicide association exists throughout the entire year. Using distributed lag nonlinear modeling, which effectively controls for nonlinear and delayed effects, we examine temperature–suicide associations for both a warm season (April–September) and a cool season (October–March) for three cities across South Korea: Seoul, Daegu, and Busan. We find consistent, statistically significant, mostly linear relationships between relative risk of suicide and daily temperature in the cool season but few associations in the warm season. This seasonal signal of statistically significant temperature–suicide associations only in the cool season exists among all age segments, but especially for those 35 and older, along with both males and females. We further use distributed lag nonlinear modeling to examine cloud cover–suicide associations and find few significant relationships. This result suggests that that high daily temperatures in the cool season, and not exposure to sun, are responsible for the strong temperature–suicide associations found in South Korea
