To put it simply, seeds are the essence of life. Without their varied yields, the earth would have no agriculture, no livestock, no food systems, no ecological stability. In all shapes, sizes, and distributions, seeds are genetic powerhouses that store life\u27s codes; they are as essential a resource as the water and soil at nourish them. Nonetheless, mounting evidence demonstrates steady erosion of the seed biodiversity necessary for viable food systems. Some seed varieties have been unable to adapt as habitats change or shrink, non- commercial seed-saving techniques have disappeared along with community elders, and a relatively small number of hybrid and transgenic commodity crop varieties – none of which yield useful seeds – dominate global agriculture while the botanical populations of historic landraces and their wild cousins decline. Effects of Volcanic Emissions on Clouds During Kilauea Degassing Events
Aerosols influence Earths radiative balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by modifying cloud properties. Current scientific consensus indicates that these effects may offset as much as 50% of the warming due to greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last two decades dramatic volcanic events in Hawaii have produced localized aerosol emissions in otherwise clean environments. These are natural experiments" where the aerosol effects on clouds and climate can be partitioned from other effects like meteorology and industrial emissions. Therefore, these events provide a unique opportunity to learn about possible effects of aerosol pollution on climate through cloud modification. In this work we use the version 5 of the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS-5) and satellite retrievals to analyze and evaluate the strength of the aerosol indirect effect on liquid and ice clouds during the 2008 and 2018 Kilauea degassing events using different emissions scenarios (0, 1, and 5 actual emissions). Our results suggested that the 2018 event was stronger and more regionally significant with respect to cloud formation process for both liquid and ice clouds, while the 2008 affected local liquid clouds only. GEOS-5 predictions reproduced spatial patterns for all parameters, however better precision could be gained by using more accurate plume parameters for height and ash concentration
Can’t See the Wood for the Trees: The Returns to Farm Forestry in Ireland
working paperThe period 2007-2009 witnessed considerable variability in the price of outputs such
as milk and cereals and this was compounded by a high degree of volatility in the
price of inputs such as fertilizer, animal feed and energy. Previously, Irish farms have
used the returns to off-farm employment as well as agricultural support payments
such as the Single Farm Payment (SFP) and the Rural Environmental Protection
Scheme (REPS) to protect their living standards against low and uncertain agricultural
market returns. However, the downturn in the Irish economy has led to a reduction in
the availability of off-farm employment and also the discontinuation of REPS. This
may lead to an increase in afforestation on Irish farms, as forestry offers greater
certainty through the provision of an annual premium in addition to the SFP.
However, the decision to afforest represents a significant long-term investment
decision that should not be entered into without careful economic consideration. The
aim of this paper is to use the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis method to
calculate the returns to forestry under alternative opportunity costs associated with
conventional agricultural activities being superseded. The returns to forestry are
calculated using the Forestry Investment Value Estimator (FIVE). These returns were
then incorporated in the DCF model along with the returns to five conventional
agricultural enterprises, which would potentially be superseded by forestry. This
approach allows for the calculation of the Net Present Value (NPV) of three forestry
scenarios
Extensions of Picard 2-Stacks and the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes
The aim of this paper is to define and study the 3-category of extensions of
Picard 2-stacks over a site S and to furnish a geometrical description of the
cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves. More
precisely, our main Theorem furnishes
(1) a parametrization of the equivalence classes of objects, 1-arrows,
2-arrows, and 3-arrows of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks by
the cohomology groups Ext^i, and
(2) a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3
complexes of abelian sheaves via extensions of Picard 2-stacks.
To this end, we use the triequivalence between the 3-category of Picard
2-stacks and the tricategory T^[-2,0](S) of length 3 complexes of abelian
sheaves over S introduced by the second author in arXiv:0906.2393, and we
define the notion of extension in this tricategory T^[-2,0](S), getting a pure
algebraic analogue of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks. The
calculus of fractions that we use to define extensions in the tricategory
T^[-2,0](S) plays a central role in the proof of our Main Theorem.Comment: 2 New Appendix: in the first Appendix we compute a long exact

Identifying green logistics best practices leading to the effective usage of pharmaceuticals: a case study of Thailand’s Public Hospitals

Pharmaceuticals are a key input into healthcare operations and so their effective management is vital. This issue is of key importance in Thailand and is aligned with the Thailand’s 2nd National Logistics and Supply Chain Research Strategies (2012-2016) focusing on healthcare green logistics. Pharmaceuticals in hospitals account for more than 50% of the total hospital purchasing budget. Moreover, the overuse of medicine was generally found to be prevalent in Thai hospitals despite serious financial concerns. The aim of this study was twofold: Phase (i) to investigate the movement and lifecycle of pharmaceuticals within Thai hospital sites and Phase (ii) identify the GL practices that effectively control/minimize the use of pharmaceuticals.
Research Approach
Using a case research method six hospitals were examined, to give coverage of the different types/sizes, locations and a range of environmental performance issues. Hospital visits were undertaken during January to July 2014, to obtain data by using a multi-method approach: interviews, documentation reviews and in situ observation. Purposive respondent sampling was undertaken to ensure that data was collected from staff with experience of pharmaceutical management and a bespoke form of content analysis used for the data review before further cross-case analysis.
Findings and Originality
The result of Phase (i) revealed that pharmaceutical flows appeared to be sophisticated and problematic, caused by issues such as limited budget allocation, ineffective governmental processes, and the over-prescribing of medicine for chronic patients. The findings also identified effective GL practices such as: (i) prescribing medicines for only 1-2 months for some patient conditions/drug types and increasing the frequency of follow-up reviews, (ii) conducting a medicines return programme and (iii) having a clearly defined system of pharmaceutical product review. The outcomes of the study proposed key practices to support a Sustainable Health System at both policy and hospital levels. Within this were: (i) a representation of stakeholder views, (ii) the provision of healthcare education and communication, (iii) addressing self-health management issues and (iv) planned system review and improvement. The design and execution of such a system should be grounded in Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) concept.
Research Impacts
In the GL research paradigm public healthcare, developing nations, human elements and life-cycle products have received limited attention; this study therefore contributes to the reduction of these gaps. The SEP concept was highly recommended by the United Nations, instead of Sustainable Development, in addressing GL practices in Thai culture to promote sustainable health standards and this underpins the focus and the originality/impact of this study.
Practical Impacts
This study recommends that staff in Thai hospitals focus on effective pharmaceutical management to contribute to the sustainability of good GL practices (as identified) and to the design and delivery of a Sustainable Health System in Thailand. The study presents guidance and support to do this
