Magneto-optics of massive Dirac fermions in bulk Bi2Se3

We report on magneto-optical studies of Bi2Se3, a representative member of the 3D topological insulator family. Its electronic states in bulk are shown to be well described by a simple Dirac-type Hamiltonian for massive particles with only two parameters: the fundamental bandgap and the band velocity. In a magnetic field, this model implies a unique property - spin splitting equal to twice the cyclotron energy: Es = 2Ec. This explains the extensive magneto-transport studies concluding a fortuitous degeneracy of the spin and orbital split Landau levels in this material. The Es = 2Ec match differentiates the massive Dirac electrons in bulk Bi2Se3 from those in quantum electrodynamics, for which Es = Ec always holds.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and Supplementary materials, to be published in Physical Review Letter

Electron-impact ionization of atomic hydrogen at 2 eV above threshold

The convergent close-coupling method is applied to the calculation of fully differential cross sections for ionization of atomic hydrogen by 15.6 eV electrons. We find that even at this low energy the method is able to yield predictive results with small uncertainty. As a consequence we suspect that the experimental normalization at this energy is approximately a factor of two too high.Comment: 10 page

QCD-like theories at nonzero temperature and density

We investigate the properties of hot and/or dense matter in QCD-like theories with quarks in a (pseudo)real representation of the gauge group using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The gauge dynamics is modeled using a simple lattice spin model with nearest-neighbor interactions. We first keep our discussion as general as possible, and only later focus on theories with adjoint quarks of two or three colors. Calculating the phase diagram in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential, it is qualitatively confirmed that the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition is much higher than the deconfinement transition temperature. At a chemical potential equal to half of the diquark mass in the vacuum, a diquark Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase transition occurs. In the two-color case, a Ginzburg-Landau expansion is used to study the tetracritical behavior around the intersection point of the deconfinement and BEC transition lines, which are both of second order. We obtain a compact expression for the expectation value of the Polyakov loop in an arbitrary representation of the gauge group (for any number of colors), which allows us to study Casimir scaling at both nonzero temperature and chemical potential.Comment: JHEP class, 31 pages, 7 eps figures; v2: error in Eq. Complete Break Up of Ortho Positronium (Ps)- Hydrogenic ion System

The dynamics of the complete breakup process in an Ortho Ps - He+ system including electron loss to the continuum (ELC) is studied where both the projectile and the target get ionized. The process is essentially a four body problem and the present model takes account of the two centre effect on the electron ejected from the Ps atom which is crucial for a proper description of the ELC phenomena. The calculations are performed in the framework of Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The exchange effect between the target and the projectile electron is taken into account in a consistent manner. The proper asymptotic 3-body boundary condition for this ionization process is also satisfied in the present model. A distinct broad ELC peak is noted in the fully differential cross sections (5DCS) for the Ps electron corroborating qualitatively the experiment for the Ps - He system. Both the dynamics of the ELC from the Ps and the ejected electron from the target He+ in the FDCS are studied using coplanar geometry. Interesting features are noted in the FDCS for both the electrons belonging to the target and the projectile.Comment: 14 pages,7 figure
