Clinical presentation, auscultation recordings, ultrasonographic findings and treatment response of 12 adult cattle with chronic suppurative pneumonia: case study
Auscultation is considered the critical component of the veterinary clinical examination for the diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease but the accuracy with which adventitious sounds reflect underlying lung pathology remains largely unproven. Modern portable ultrasound machines provide the veterinary practitioner with an inexpensive, non-invasive tool with which to examine the pleural surfaces and superficial lung parenchyma. Simultaneous recording of sounds overlying normal lung and defined pathology allows critical assessment of auscultated sounds in the same animal removing confounding factors such as respiratory rate and thickness of the chest wall (body condition). Twelve cows, referred to the University of Edinburgh Veterinary School, were diagnosed with chronic suppurative pneumonia and enrolled into this prospective study to record and monitor lung sounds, ultrasonographic findings, and response to a standardised antibiotic treatment regimen. Most cows (8/12) had a normal rectal temperature on presentation but all cows had received antibiotic therapy at some time in the previous two weeks and six animals were receiving antibiotic treatment upon admission. All cattle were tachypnoeic (>40 breaths per minute) with frequent and productive coughing, halitosis, and a purulent nasal discharge most noticeable when the head was lowered. Ultrasonographic examination of the chest readily identified pathological changes consistent with severe lung pathology subsequently confirmed as chronic suppurative pneumonia in four cows at necropsy; eight cows recovered well after antibiotic treatment and were discharged two to six weeks after admission. It proved difficult to differentiate increased audibility of normal lung sounds due to tachypnoea from wheezes; coarse crackles were not commonly heard. In general, sounds were reduced in volume over consolidated lung relative to normal lung tissue situated dorsally. Rumen contraction sounds were commonly transmitted over areas of lung pathology. Trueperella (formerly Arcanobacterium) pyogenes was isolated from three of four lung tissue samples at necrospy. Treatment with procaine penicillin for 42 consecutive days resulted in marked improvement with return to normal appetite and improvement in body condition in 8 of 12 cows (67%) where lesions did not extend more than 10-15 cm above the level of the olecranon on both sides of the chest
Compact High-Velocity Clouds at High Resolution
Six examples of the compact, isolated high-velocity clouds catalogued by
Braun & Burton (1999) and identified with a dynamically cold ensemble of
primitive objects falling towards the barycenter of the Local Group have been
imaged with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope; an additional ten have
been imaged with the Arecibo telescope. The imaging reveals a characteristic
core/halo morphology: one or several cores of cool, relatively
high-column-density material, are embedded in an extended halo of warmer,
lower-density material. Several of the cores show kinematic gradients
consistent with rotation; these CHVCs are evidently rotationally supported and
dark-matter dominated. The imaging data allows several independent estimates of
the distances to these objects, which lie in the range 0.3 to 1.0 Mpc. The CHVC
properties resemble what might be expected from very dark dwarf irregular

Sialylation of campylobacter jejuni lipo-oligosaccharides: impact on phagocytosis and cytokine production in mice
<p>Background:
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a post-infectious polyradiculoneuropathy, frequently associated with antecedent Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) infection. The presence of sialic acid on C. jejuni lipo-oligosaccharide (LOS) is considered a risk factor for development of GBS as it crucially determines the structural homology between LOS and gangliosides, explaining the induction of cross-reactive neurotoxic antibodies. Sialylated C. jejuni are recognised by TLR4 and sialoadhesin; however, the functional implications of these interactions in vivo are unknown.</p>
<p>Methodology/Principal Findings:
In this study we investigated the effects of bacterial sialylation on phagocytosis and cytokine secretion by mouse myeloid cells in vitro and in vivo. Using fluorescently labelled GM1a/GD1a ganglioside-mimicking C. jejuni strains and corresponding (Cst-II-mutant) control strains lacking sialic acid, we show that sialylated C. jejuni was more efficiently phagocytosed in vitro by BM-MΦ, but not by BM-DC. In addition, LOS sialylation increased the production of IL-10, IL-6 and IFN-β by both BM-MΦ and BM-DC. Subsequent in vivo experiments revealed that sialylation augmented the deposition of fluorescent bacteria in splenic DC, but not macrophages. In addition, sialylation significantly amplified the production of type I interferons, which was independent of pDC.</p>
<p>Conclusions/Significance:
These results identify novel immune stimulatory effects of C. jejuni sialylation, which may be important in inducing cross-reactive humoral responses that cause GBS</p>
Stochastic Seismic Emission From Acoustic Glories and the Quiet Sun
Abstract. Helioseismic images of multipolar active regions show enhanced seismic emission in 5-mHz oscillations in a halo surrounding the active region called the ‘acoustic glory’. The acoustic glories contain elements that sustain an average seismic emission 50 % greater than similar elements in the quiet Sun. The most intense seismic emitters tend to form strings in non-magnetic regions, sometimes marking the borders of weak magnetic regions and the separation between weak magnetic regions of opposite polarity. This study compares the temporal character of seismic emission from acoustic glories with that from the quiet Sun. The power distribution of quiet-Sun seismic emission far from solar activity is exponential, as for random Gaussian noise, and therefore not perceivably episodic. The distribution of seismic power emanating from the most intense elements that comprise the acoustic glories is exponential out to approximately 4 times the average power emitted by the quiet Sun. Above this threshold the latter distribution shows significant saturation, suggesting the operation of a hydromechanical non-linearity that sets limits on the acoustic power generated by the convection zone. This could give us considerable insight into the physical mechanism of seismic emission from the near subphotosphere. 1
