Finite element analysis of porous commercially pure titanium for biomedical implant application

    Get PDF
In biomedical implant applications, porous metallic structures are particularly appealing as they enhance the stiffness compatibility with the host tissue. The mechanical properties of the porous material are critically affected by microstructural features, such as the pore shape, the distribution of porosity, and the level of porosity. In this study, mechanical properties of porous commercially pure titanium structures with various porosity levels were investigated through a combination of experiments and finite element modelling. Finite element simulations were conducted on representative volume elements of the microstructure to assess the role of pore parameters on the effective mechanical properties. Modelling results indicated that the shape of the pore, in addition to porosity level, play a significant role on the effective behaviour. Finite element simulations provide reasonably accurate prediction of the effective Young's modulus, with errors as low as 0.9% for porosity of 35%. It was observed that the large spread in yield strength produced by the simulations was most likely due to the random pore distribution in the network, which may lead to a high probability of plastic strain initiation within the thin walls of the porous network

Bioresorbable Magnesium-Based Stent: Real-World Clinical Experience and Feasibility of Follow-Up by Coronary Computed Tomography: A New Window to Look at New Scaffolds

    No full text
    (1) Background: The diagnostic accuracy of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for coronary artery disease (CAD) has greatly improved so CCTA represents a transition in the care of patients suffering from CAD. Magnesium-based bioresorbable stents (Mg-BRS) secure acute percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) results without leaving, in the long term, a metallic caging effect. The purpose of this real-world study was to assess clinical and CCTA medium- and long-term follow-up of all our patients with implanted Mg-BRS. (2) Methods: The patency of 52 Mg-BRS implanted in 44 patients with de novo lesions (24 of which had acute coronary syndrome (ACS)) was evaluated by CCTA and compared to quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) post-implantation. (3) Results: ten events including four deaths occurred during a median follow-up of 48 months. CCTA was interpretable and in-stent measurements were successful at follow-up without being hindered by the stent strut’s “blooming effect”. Minimal in-stent diameters on CCTA were found to be 1.03 ± 0.60 mm smaller than the expected diameter after post-dilation on implantation (p < 0.05), a difference not found in comparing CCTA and QCA. (4) Conclusions: CCTA follow-up of implanted Mg-BRS is fully interpretable and we confirm the long-term Mg-BRS safety profile

Uncontrolled bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract

    No full text
Purpose of review Acute gastrointestinal bleeding is a frequent emergency situation, whose incidence will likely rise as a result of the increasing use of direct anticoagulants and of the medical progresses resulting in longer life expectancy with underlying comorbidities. Updated guidelines and improvements in the diagnostic and therapeutic tools are now available and will likely improve the management of massive gastrointestinal bleeding in the near future. Recent findings The assessment of severity has been improved by validated scores useable upon admission. Massive blood transfusion protocols and specific care in case of bleeding of patients treated with direct anticoagulants, including concentrates of coagulation factors and monoclonal antibodies are now available. The endoscopic management has been facilitated by the use of hemostatic powders and by the use of self-expanding metal stents in case of variceal hemorrhage. New diagnostic tools include emergency video-capsule endoscopy, multiphasic computed tomography angiography and enterography. Summary The implementation of multidisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms for the management of massive bleeding requires a close collaboration between emergency physicians, intensivists, endoscopists, radiologists and surgeons. A sequential strategy involving each of these specialists is desirable for a successful management of acute and massive gastrointestinal bleeding.SCOPUS: re.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Coronary angiography is a routinely performed intervention, with radial catheterization the recommended approach. We report a unique case of perforation of the right vertebral artery following coronary angiography that was successfully treated by endovascular management. Redécouvrir la Géopolitique de la Révolution française de Michel Vovelle, 30 ans plus tard

International audienceTo assess “the spawnings” of La DĂ©couverte de la politique, a major book by Michel Vovelle which, although out of print today, continues, almost three decades after its publication, to fuel debates and inspire research, a historiographical dialogue has been engaged with Serge Bianchi, Emeritus Professor of History at Rennes 2 University, a witness to and participant in the vast worksites on politicization initiated by Michel Vovelle at the time of the Bicentennial, and ValĂ©rie Sottocasa, Professor of Modern History and the History of the Revolution at Toulouse II-Jean-JaurĂšs University, whose published and supervised research examines in depth the geopolitical approach to France under the Revolution. The sub-title, "GĂ©opolitique de la RĂ©volution française", perfectly expresses Michel Vovelle's interdisciplinary ambition. These “Regards croisĂ©s” have therefore been composed to mirror an exciting exchange that took place between geographer Yves Lacoste and the book's author at the time of its release  (Michel Vovelle et Yves Lacoste, «GĂ©opolitique de la RĂ©volution française. Entretien avec Michel Vovelle », HĂ©rodote. Revue de gĂ©ographie et de gĂ©opolitique, n°74/75 « GĂ©ographie historique », 1994, p. 282-296). This exchange concerned two themes reinvested here: firstly, that of the “entry into modernity”, and more specifically, the contributions of the geopolitics of the Revolution to understanding today's France, and secondly, that of interdisciplinary dialogue, which is also related to Michel Vovelle's borrowings from other disciplines to create his method, as well as the echoes of his work beyond the circle of historians of the Revolution. To these themes will be added contributions from Nicola Todorov, lecturer at the University of French Guiana and a specialist in administrative models in Napoleonic Europe, Chair of the Commission for the Historical Geography of the French National Geography Committee, and HervĂ© Le Bras, Director of Studies at the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS), Chair of Demographics, co-author with Emmanuel Todd of L’Invention de la France, a book that Michel Vovelle assimilated, in its introduction, to a provocation “in the correct meaning of the wordPour apprĂ©cier « les frayages » de La DĂ©couverte de la politique, Ɠuvre majeure de Michel Vovelle qui, bien qu’épuisĂ©e aujourd’hui, continue, presque trois dĂ©cennies aprĂšs sa publication, d’alimenter les dĂ©bats et d’inspirer des recherches, un dialogue historiographique a Ă©tĂ© engagĂ© avec Serge Bianchi, professeur Ă©mĂ©rite d’histoire Ă  l’universitĂ© Rennes 2, tĂ©moin et partie prenante des vastes chantiers autour de la politisation initiĂ©s par Michel Vovelle lors du Bicentenaire, et ValĂ©rie Sottocasa, professeure d’histoire moderne et de la RĂ©volution Ă  l’universitĂ© Toulouse II-Jean-JaurĂšs dont les recherches publiĂ©es et dirigĂ©es approfondissent l’approche gĂ©opolitique de la France rĂ©volutionnaire.
