Analysis of the Jun Ishiwara's "The universal meaning of the quantum of action"

Here we present an analysis of the paper "Universelle Bedeutung des Wirkungsquantums" (The universal meaning of the quantum of action), published by Jun Ishiwara in German in the "Proceedings of Tokyo Mathematico-Physical Society 8 (1915) 106-116". In his work, Ishiwara, established in the Sendai University, Japan, proposed - simultaneously with Arnold Sommerfeld, William Wilson and Niels Bohr in Europe - the phase-space-integral quantization, a rule that would be incorporated into the old-quantum-theory formalism. The discussions and analysis render this paper fully accessible to undergraduate students of physics with elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics.Comment: 12 page

Understanding the Pointer States

In quantum mechanics, pointer states are eigenstates of the observable of the measurement apparatus that represent the possible positions of the display pointer of the equipment. The origin of this concept lies in attempts to fill the blanks in the Everett's relative-state interpretation, and to make it a fully valid description of physical reality. To achieve this, it was necessary to consider not only the main system interacting with the measurement apparatus (like von Neumann and Everett did) but also the role of the environment in eliminating correlations between different possible measurements when interacting with the measurement apparatus. The interaction of the environment with the main system (and the measurement apparatus) is the core of the decoherence theory, which followed Everett's thesis. In this article, we review the measurement process according to von Neumann, Everett's relative state interpretation, the purpose of decoherence and some of its follow-up until Wojciech Zurek's primordial paper that consolidated the concept of pointer state, previously presented by Heinz Dieter Zeh. Employing a simple physical model consisting of a pair of two-level systems -- one representing the main system, the other the measurement apparatus -- and a thermal bath -- representing the environment -- we show how pointer states emerge, explaining its contributions to the question of measurement in quantum mechanics, as well as its limitations. Finally, we briefly show some of its consequences. Transformation of UML Behavioral Diagrams to Support Software Model Checking

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is currently accepted as the standard for modeling (object-oriented) software, and its use is increasing in the aerospace industry. Verification and Validation of complex software developed according to UML is not trivial due to complexity of the software itself, and the several different UML models/diagrams that can be used to model behavior and structure of the software. This paper presents an approach to transform up to three different UML behavioral diagrams (sequence, behavioral state machines, and activity) into a single Transition System to support Model Checking of software developed in accordance with UML. In our approach, properties are formalized based on use case descriptions. The transformation is done for the NuSMV model checker, but we see the possibility in using other model checkers, such as SPIN. The main contribution of our work is the transformation of a non-formal language (UML) to a formal language (language of the NuSMV model checker) towards a greater adoption in practice of formal methods in software development.Comment: In Proceedings FESCA 2014, arXiv:1404.043

Variação na frequência cardíaca e intensidade do craving durante a exposição a estímulo em dependentes de crack

O presente trabalho avaliou a variação do craving e da frequência cardíaca durante a exposição à estímulo em dependente de crack. Estudo experimental com amostra aleatória composta por dependentes de crack internados. Os sujeitos foram divididos em grupo experimental (n=30) para quem eram apresentadas fotografias de uso de crack e grupo controle (n=30) para quem eram apresentadas fotografias neutras. Durante a exposição foi controlada: frequência cardíaca, craving e confiança. Observou-se que o estímulo exerceu um efeito significativo sobre a variabilidade do craving (p=0,006) e da frequência cardíaca (p=0,008), não ocorrendo este fenômeno frente à confiança (p=0,983). Por todas as mãos: a experiência de criação do Coletivo de Docentes Negras/os da UFRJ

O presente artigo visa refletir sobre os desafios impostos pelas e para as universidades a partir da adoção de cotas raciais. Dentre as principais inovações encontradas ao longo de 15 anos, temos o surgimento de novos modelos de organização negra, simbolizados pelos coletivos. Mais recentemente foi criado, no âmbito da UFRJ, o Coletivo de Docentes Negras e Negros da UFRJ, uma proposta que visa produzir uma aglutinação política de enfrentamento ao racismo estrutural e institucional no interior da maior universidade do Brasil - uma das últimas a adotar medidas no tocante ao racismo. Pretendemos produzir uma reflexão que dialogue com diversos campos teóricos, tais como os autores decoloniais, pós-coloniais e as teorias críticas, bem como reflexões acerca dos movimentos sociais e as teorias e abordagens das relações raciais

As exportaçoes brasileiras de painéis de madeira

Este trabalho analisa as exportações brasileiras de painéis de madeira (compensado, painéis de partícula, painéis de fibras e laminados) no período de 1961 a 2000. 0 estudo foi realizado com base na analise exploratória das series temporais pertinentes ao setor e na estimação de modelos empíricos de taxa de crescimento, de demanda, de oferta e de substituição. No período estudado, fica evidente o grande crescimento da indústria nacional de painéis de madeira, sendo o compensado o principal painel de madeira brasileiro exportado. 0 Brasil segue uma tendência oposta a mundial na produção e nas exportações de painéis de madeira, pois, enquanto a produção e as exportações mundiais de compensado decrescem, antagonicamente no Brasil, a produção e as exportações desse painel crescem. No entanto, o consumo nacional de painéis de madeira segue a mesma tendência mundial, com o aumento no consumo dos painéis de fibra, painéis de partícula e laminados e com o decréscimo no consumo dos compensados. As estimativas revelam que os fatores referentes a demanda e a oferta tiveram um papel determinante sobre o desempenho das exportações brasileiras de painéis de madeira. O Brasil possui baixa competitividade ante as exportações mundiais de painéis de madeira. Conclui-se que a atividade industrial brasileira de painéis de madeira não tem por objetivo a exportação e, sim, a compensação de quedas na demanda intern
