    Effects of rotation in the energy spectrum of C60C_{60}

    Full text link
    In this paper, motivated by the experimental evidence of rapidly rotating C60C_{60} molecules in fullerite, we study the low-energy electronic states of rotating fullerene within a continuum model. In this model, the low-energy spectrum is obtained from an effective Dirac equation including non-Abelian gauge fields that simulate the pentagonal rings of the molecule. Rotation is incorporated into the model by solving the effective Dirac equation in the rotating referential frame. The exact analytical solution for the eigenfunctions and energy spectrum is obtained, yielding the previously known static results in the no rotation limit. Due to the coupling between rotation and total angular momentum, that appears naturally in the rotating frame, the zero modes of static C60C_{60} are shifted and also suffer a Zeeman splitting whithout the presence of a magnetic field

In Portugal, grass and Olea europaea pollen are certainly one of the main sources of athmospheric aeroallergens and as such, one of the main causes of respiratory allergy. For these reasons, it is useful the development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of these pathologies. The execution of aerobiological analysis including pollen calendars and/or immunoassays for the detection and quantification of allergens which could forecast the allergenic potential of the athmosphere are quite relevant since they would contribute to develop prevention measures of allergic respiratory diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the putative correlation between the concentration of some of the major allergens of and with their pollen counts. Methodology: On a meteorological platform at the town center of Evora (south Portugal), ambient air was sampled at 800L/min with a Chemvol high-volume cascade impactor equipped with stages PM>10µm, 10 µm>PM>2.5µm. The polyurethane impacting substrate was extracted with 0.1M NH4HCO3, pH8.1, supplemented with 0.1% BSA. The major pollen allergens from grass Phleum p 5 and olive Ole e 1 were determined with allergen specific ELISA´s. Airborne pollen of and Olea europaea simultaneously monitored with a Burkard Seven Day Recording Volumetric Spore Trap* , between the 30th of April and the 8th of July of 2009. Both samplers were placed side-by-side with air input at the same level. Results: During the pollen season of 2009, high values of grass pollen were recorded between May 2th and June 1 th. It was also observed that the air content of Phl p5 or Ole e1 aeroallergens were directly correlated with airborne pollen counts of Poaceae and Oleaceae, respectively. Conclusions: These results suggest that the directly quantification of aeroallergens may contribute, together with pollen counts of air samples, to define the allergic risk with higher precision. Acknowledgments: This study is integrated in the european project HIALINE (Executive Agency for Health and Consumers under grant agreement No 2008 11 07

    TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF POACEAE POLLEN IN AREAS OF SOUTHERN UNITED KINGDOM, SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

    Get PDF
    Overall, longer Poaceae pollen seasons coincided with earlier pollen season start dates. Winter rainfall noticeably affects the intensity of Poaceae pollen seasons in Mediterranean areas, but this was not as important in Worcester. Weekly data from Worcester followed a similar pattern to that of Badajoz and Évora but at a distance of more than 1500 km and 4-5 weeks later

    Singular value decomposition and matrix reorderings in quantum information theory

    Full text link
    We review Schmidt and Kraus decompositions in the form of singular value decomposition using operations of reshaping, vectorization and reshuffling. We use the introduced notation to analyse the correspondence between quantum states and operations with the help of Jamiolkowski isomorphism. The presented matrix reorderings allow us to obtain simple formulae for the composition of quantum channels and partial operations used in quantum information theory. To provide examples of the discussed operations we utilize a package for the Mathematica computing system implementing basic functions used in the calculations related to quantum information theory.Comment: 11 pages, no figures, see http://zksi.iitis.pl/wiki/projects:mathematica-qi for related softwar

    Canopy temperatures and accumulated degree days on cotton plants under water deficit.

    Canopy temperature is one of the best integrators of plant health and has been successfully used for irrigation scheduling. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the canopy temperature of cotton plants under water stress at different stages of the crop cycle and to determine the accumulated degree days based on canopy temperature. It was applied water deficit periods of 15 days at the following phenological stages: First Square, First Flower, Peak Bloom and Opening Bolls and control treatment. Canopy temperature was obtained using SmartCrop® wireless infrared temperature sensors. The results showed higher canopy temperatures during water deficit periods. For water deficit periods, canopy temperature values were always above the optimum temperature for cotton metabolism. As a result of the stress caused by water deficit, cotton yield was significantly reduced, with the higher yield loses recorded when applied deficit occurred during flowering stages (beginning and peak). Accumulated degree days also varied according to water stress, with a shortened phenological cycle for treatments with water deficit in comparison to the control without stress. The period for fiber thickening was also influenced by the variation in canopy temperature due to water stress, which may reflect decline in fiber quality

    Impact of thermosonication on kiwi juice quality

    Traditional heat treatments such as pasteurization are usually used in fruit juice preservation. However, due to undesirable quality changes, industries seek other processing technologies that can retain the fruit juices' quality. This study aims to develop a high quality and safe-to-drink kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward) juice throughout the application of thermosonication treatments (TS). Listeria innocua (a surrogate of the pathogenic L. monocytogenes) was used as a safety indicator. pH, SSC, colour, cloud value, total phenolics, total chlorophylls, and minerals were evaluated as quality parameters. TS was carried out with an ultrasound homogenizer at a constant frequency of 20 kHz, 80% amplitude and discontinued pulsation (10s on, 5s off). The juice samples were submitted to TS at 45, 50 and 55°C for 15, 10 and 3 minutes, respectively. Thermal treatments (HT) were performed at the same temperatures for 60, 25 and 10 minutes. Juices' quality and safety were evaluated before and after treatments. All the treatments fulfil the FDA recommendation of 5-log microbial reduction. Most of the quality parameters were retained after both processes. These results proved that a mild heat process could be applied to fruit juices, allowing the obtention of a safe and improved final product's quality.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
