Evidence has been suggesting that neurochemical and behavioral adaptations emerging during one addictive behavior may enable a subsequent, different, addiction, even when the first one has ended. Such association seems remarkably accurate to fat bingeing and ethanol consumption, which constitute a relevant example of addictive patterns sequential association, particularly in adolescence. Therefore, the main purpose of the following review is to comprehend if adolescents who have engaged on fat bingeing escalated their ethanol consumption, after fat bingeing terminus, and secondly, in a positive scenario, to highlight why such association may happen. After searching databases such as MEDLINE (PubMed) and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, all articles focused on adolescent humans or adolescent rats or adolescent mice, that included topics on fat bingeing and consequent ethanol consumption, were considered. Gathered results strengthened the referred hypothesis. Reports stating that adolescent fat bingers engage on escalated ethanol consumption were fundamentally supported by a prevalent fast food and ethanol cultures, bingers ‘shared personality traits, adolescence ‘susceptibilities for addictive behaviors and neurochemical and behavioral craving installment after fat bingeing cessation. Given that adolescence is a key structural and functional phase of human development, and that fat and ethanol consumption are linked to harmful physiological and social effects, priority must be given to multidisciplinary interventions aiming to challenge addictions, both pharmacologically and psychotherapeutically.

Model of clinical internship: a new approach

    Get PDF
Clinical internship is an integral part of the University of Aveiro, School of Health study programs for all majors: Nursing, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Radiotherapy, and Speech-Language Pathology. Clinical internship consists of a learning period where professional skills are integrated and promoted, and expertise is developed. It begins during the first year, and progressively increases in time during the subsequent semesters, until the last year, when it becomes full-time. The clinical internship of each major is a continuous growing process of professional capacities that gradually increases in development expertise, and is cumulative, synergetic and interactive. This new learning approach is common to all the majors, it is characterized by innovation, and it strives to assure the development of professional skills through the integration of knowledge acquired during theoretical lectures. Thus, future professionals should be autonomous, responsible, capable of thought-based critique, fit to implement innovations, and motivated for a life-time of self-learning. Within this context, an ecological model of thought-based clinical practice includes three factors: activities, roles, and interpersonal relationships. It is based on the principles of observation, experience and analysis of the pre-professional practice, thought-based, and systematically orientated by academic faculty and working professionals. The methodology encompasses two areas: multidisciplinary (conceptualisation and organization of the various internships programs, with faculty of the different academic programs as well as working professionals), and management model (forecast of the required material and human resources; creation of a Internship Program Centre; systematic monitoring of the structure, processes and results). Analysis of the first and second clinical internship has shown a great acceptance on behalf of all participants (students, faculty and working professionals). Statistical data will be presented at the conference.publishe

Objective: Difficulties in emotion regulation are thought to play a transdiagnostic role across eating disorders (ED). In the current study, we explored with a path analysis the mediating role of self-criticism, experiential avoidance and negative urgency on the relationship between ED-related symptoms and dimensions of difficulties in emotion regulation. Method: Participants were 103 female outpatients recruited at a Portuguese ED hospital unit, diagnosed with an ED, aged 14–60 years old (M = 28.0, SD = 10.5), body mass index (BMI) ranging from 11.72 to 39.44 (M = 20.1, SD = 5.4). Results: The path analysis resulted in a model with an adequate fit to the data (SRMR = 0.05; RMSEA = 0.07 [0.00, 0.12], PCLOSE = 0.269; TLI = 0.97; IFI = 0.99; GFI = 0.95). A final model in which the relationship between ED-related symptoms and dimensions of difficulties in emotion regulation was mediated by self-criticism, experiential avoidance and negative urgency, accounted for a variance of 71% for strategies, 57% for non-acceptance, 62% for impulses, 56% for goals and 20% for clarity. Conclusion: Results suggest that self-criticism, experiential avoidance and negative urgency, combined, are relevant in the relationship between ED-related symptoms and difficulties in emotion regulation. ED treatment and emotion regulation skills may be enhanced through the inclusion of specific components that target self-criticism, experiential avoidance and negative urgency, as they become prominent during the therapeutic process.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(POCI‐01‐0145‐FEDER‐028145

Low-cost GNSS technology for monitoring grazing sheep

    Get PDF
Extensive livestock production is supported by natural and biodiverse pastures, characterized by marked seasonal variation of biomass, plant species and growth stage. The use of the food resources and the occupation of grazing space can be very heterogeneous in such conditions due to ruminants grazing behaviour. Successful grazing and pasture management requires an understanding of the adjustment mechanisms behind the grazing behaviour that enables adaptation to grazing conditions. Use of GNSS technology allows a quick and effective grazing data collection which is, however expensive, limiting its application to research purposes. This paper reviews the principles for the application of GNSS technology and evaluates the use of inexpensive commercial GNSS receivers (commercial of the shelf - COTS: CatTrackTM”). Six receivers were used for six data collection period over two months of continuous grazing on a natural pasture. The measured static and dynamic accuracy of the receivers is 14m and 40m, respectively. The precision was 3m and the reliability 80%. The tested equipment allows the differentiation between animal activities (grazing, resting and transit). It also determines sheep locations, allowing the characterization of patterns, pathways and preferred areas. It is concluded that the COTS equipment has a high quality / price ratio, so it can become an important support decision tool essential to a more precise pasture management

Sobre arte e viagem pode-se estabelecer um paralelo continuado, irónico, expressivo. Entre as duas, a síntese do signo, a justaposição associativa. A viagem mostra o mundo, a viagem mostra quem somos. A caminho se desenha, se imagina, se fantasia, se mente.
