A meta-analysis on Experience Based Career Education
Our meta-analysis of 80 evaluations of Experience Based Career Education (EBCE) programs shows that EBCE works. Students not only scored significant gains in career, life attitude, and academic skills during their EBCE experience, but they also showed significantly greater gains in all three of those outcome areas than comparison students who received the regular high school curriculum. The positive statistical significance of the findings was so large that we developed a new index, called the Basic Index of Strength or the BIS, in order to discuss and compare differences in the strength of the findings
Evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton
In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation
Convective Nonlinearity in Non-Newtonian Fluids
In the limit of infinite yield time for stresses, the hydrodynamic equations
for viscoelastic, Non-Newtonian liquids such as polymer melts must reduce to
that for solids. This piece of information suffices to uniquely determine the
nonlinear convective derivative, an ongoing point of contention in the rheology

A High Galactic Latitude HI 21cm-line Absorption Survey using the GMRT: I. Observations and Spectra
We have used the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to measure the
Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption towards 102 extragalactic radio continuum
sources, located at high (|b| >15deg.) Galactic latitudes. The Declination
coverage of the present survey is Decl. ~ -45deg.. With a mean rms optical
depth of ~0.003, this is the most sensitive Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption
survey to date. To supplement the absorption data, we have extracted the HI
21-cm line emission profiles towards these 102 lines of sight from the Leiden
Dwingeloo Survey of Galactic neutral hydrogen. We have carried out a Gaussian
fitting analysis to identify the discrete absorption and emission components in
these profiles. In this paper, we present the spectra and the components. A

The distance to the SNR CTB109 deduced from its environment
We conducted a study of the environment around the supernova remnant CTB109.
We found that the SNR is part of a large complex of HII regions extending over
an area of 400 pc along the Galactic plane at a distance of about 3 kpc at the
closer edge of the Perseus spiral arm. At this distance CTB109 has a diameter
of about 24 pc. We demonstrated that including spiral shocks in the distance
estimation is an ultimate requirement to determine reliable distances to
objects located in the Perseus arm. The most likely explanation for the high
concentration of HII regions and SNRs is that the star formation in this part

Low temperature or GroEL/ES overproduction permits growth of Escherichia coli cells lacking trigger factor and DnaK
AbstractEscherichia coli trigger factor (TF) and DnaK cooperate in the folding of newly synthesized proteins. The combined deletion of the TF-encoding tig gene and the dnaK gene causes protein aggregation and synthetic lethality at 30°C. Here we show that the synthetic lethality of ΔtigΔdnaK52 cells is abrogated either by growth below 30°C or by overproduction of GroEL/GroES. At 23°C ΔtigΔdnaK52 cells were viable and showed only minor protein aggregation. Overproduction of GroEL/GroES, but not of other chaperones, restored growth of ΔtigΔdnaK52 cells at 30°C and suppressed protein aggregation including proteins ≥60 kDa, which normally require TF and DnaK for folding. GroEL/GroES thus influences the folding of proteins previously identified as DnaK/TF substrates
An Observational Limit on the Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Local Group
We present the results of an all-sky, deep optical survey for faint Local
Group dwarf galaxies. Candidate objects were selected from the second Palomar
survey (POSS-II) and ESO/SRC survey plates and follow-up observations performed
to determine whether they were indeed overlooked members of the Local Group.
Only two galaxies (Antlia and Cetus) were discovered this way out of 206
candidates. Based on internal and external comparisons, we estimate that our
visual survey is more than 77% complete for objects larger than one arc minute
in size and with a surface brightness greater than an extremely faint limit
over the 72% of the sky not obstructed by the Milky Way. Our limit of
sensitivity cannot be calculated exactly, but is certainly fainter than 25
magnitudes per square arc second in R, probably 25.5 and possibly approaching
26. We conclude that there are at most one or two Local Group dwarf galaxies
fitting our observational criteria still undiscovered in the clear part of the
sky, and a roughly a dozen hidden behind the Milky Way. Our work places the
"missing satellite problem" on a firm quantitative observational basis. We
present detailed data on all our candidates, including surface brightness

A density-functional approach to fermionization in the 1D Bose gas
A time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme for 1D bosons with contact interaction is
derived based on a model of spinor fermions. This model is specifically
designed for the study of the strong interaction regime close to the Tonks gas.
It allows us to treat the transition from the strongly-interacting
Tonks-Girardeau to the weakly-interacting quasicondensate regime and provides
an intuitive picture of the extent of fermionization in the system. An
adiabatic local-density approximation is devised for the study of
time-dependent processes. This scheme is shown to yield not only accurate
ground-state properties but also overall features of the elementary excitation
