    Computing averages over a target probability density by statistical re-weighting of a set of samples with a different distribution is a strategy which is commonly adopted in fields as diverse as atomistic simulation and finance. Here we present a very general analysis of the accuracy and efficiency of this approach, highlighting some of its weaknesses. We then give an example of how our results can be used, specifically to assess the feasibility of high-order path integral methods. We demonstrate that the most promising of these techniques -- which is based on re-weighted sampling -- is bound to fail as the size of the system is increased, because of the exponential growth of the statistical uncertainty in the re-weighted average

    Alaboratory experiment was used to investigate the effects on decision maker performance of using geographic information system (GIS) technology as a spatial decision support system (SDSS). The research examined two independent variables: task complexity (i.e., low, medium, and high complexity, and SDSS use (i.e., no SDSS versus SDSS support). Professionals who are experienced decision makers completed a site location task that required decisions to be made based upon spatially-referenced information. The results confirm the hypotheses and show that SDSS use and task complexity both have an important impact on decision quality and solution time.     Variability in patterns of intra-specific biting attack in commonly used genetic lines of laboratory mice

    Bite targets on opponents used by individually housed male, reproductively experienced male and lactating female subjects from outbred TO and Swiss Webster and inbred NZW/Ola, BALB/c, C57BL/10, DBA/2, CBA/Ca and C3H/He lines of mice were assessed. Ten-minute videotaped encounters with anosmic male TO or “congenic” opponents were used for this purpose. In general, the attacks shown by males appeared ‘ritualised’ with the head and ventral surface of the opponent being avoided. The lactating females showed no such inhibition. The intensity and incidence (and damaging nature of the attacks) was clearly influenced by strain of the resident, its sex, its reproductive experience and (in some cases) the nature of the opponent.     We believe that names have a powerful influence on the experiments we do and the way in which we think. For this reason, and in the light of new evidence about the function and evolution of the vertebrate brain, an international consortium of neuroscientists has reconsidered the traditional, 100-year-old terminology that is used to describe the avian cerebrum. Our current understanding of the avian brain — in particular the neocortex-like cognitive functions of the avian pallium — requires a new terminology that better reflects these functions and the homologies between avian and mammalian brains

For instance, in one embodiment, the thermoplastic tape is formed from a polyurethane film. In addition, the seam can be utilized in a flat configuration or folded into a variety of different shapes, such as in a z-shaped configuration. As a result of the present invention, it has been discovered that a seam can be formed to have improved strength without substantially sacrificing the desired functional properties of the substrate materials
