    Remote sensing of the Martian surface

    Researchers investigated the physical properties of the Martian surface as inferred from a combination of orbiting and earth-based remote sensing observations and in-situ observations. This approach provides the most detailed and self-consistent view of the global and regional nature of the surface. Results focus on the areas of modeling the diurnal variation of the surface temperature of Mars, incorporating the effects of atmospheric radiation, with implications for the interpretation of surface thermal inertia; modeling the thermal emission from particulate surfaces, with application to observations of the surfaces of the Earth, Moon, and Mars; modeling the reflectance spectrum of Mars in an effort to understand the role of particle size in the difference between the bright and dark regions; and determining the slope properties of different terrestrial surfaces and comparing them with planetary slopes derived from radar observations

    Health-related learning needs and interests of selected non-institutionalized elderly

    The research question in this study was "How do the noninstitutionalized elderly in the Hamilton-Wentworth Region perceive their learning needs and interests related to health?" The theoretical foundations of instruction for adults were reviewed as well as learning needs and interests in adult education, the assessment of learning needs in general, and the assessment of the learning needs of the elderly. The methodology used was a descriptive design. A research-based questionnaire-interview was developed, refined, and pilot tested. From a random sampling procedure, a participant group of 23 was secured. The questionnaireinterview was administered in a home visit situation. Data, which were collected, were coded, analyzed, processed, and printed. The results indicated that each participant had many learning needs and interests of varying intensities. The participants had many preferences in the delivery of health promotion. The learning needs and interests had several significant correlations with other variables. The implications of the result~ were discussed

    Polypectomy Techniques, Endoscopist Characteristics, and Serious Gastrointestinal Adverse Events

    Background: A use of polypectomy techniques by endoscopist specialty (primary care, surgery, and gastroenterology) and experience (volume), and associations with serious gastrointestinal adverse events, were examined. Methods: A retrospective follow-up study with ambulatory surgery and hospital discharge datasets from Florida, 1999-2001, was used. Thirty-day hospitalizations due to colonic perforations and gastrointestinal bleeding were investigated for 323,585 patients. Results: Primary care endoscopists and surgeons used hot biopsy forceps/ablation, while gastroenterologists provided snare polypectomy or complex colonoscopy. Low-volume endoscopists were more likely to use simpler rather than complex procedures. For hot forceps/ablation and snare polypectomy, low- and medium-volume endoscopists reported higher odds of adverse events. For complex colonoscopy, higher odds of adverse events were reported for primary care endoscopists (1.74 [95%CI, 1.18 to 2.56]) relative to gastroenterologists Conclusions: Endoscopists regardless of specialty and experience can safely use cold biopsy forceps. For hot biopsy and snare polypectomy, low volume, but not specialty, contributed to increased odds of adverse events. For complex colonoscopy, primary care specialty, but not low volume, added to the odds of adverse events. Comparable outcomes were reported for surgeons and gastroenterologists. Cross-training and continuing medical education of primary care endoscopists in high-volume endoscopy settings are recommended for complex colonoscopy procedures

    Objective: To evaluate the immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of etanercept (ETN) manufactured using the serum-free, high-capacity manufacturing (SFHCM) process in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ----- Methods: In this global, multicenter, open-label, single-arm study (NCT02378506), 187 adult patients with moderate to severe RA received ETN 50 mg once weekly for 24 weeks manufactured using the SFHCM process. Immunogenicity (presence of antidrug antibodies (ADAs) and neutralizing antibodies (NAbs)) was assessed at 12 and 24 weeks. Safety and efficacy were evaluated at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. ----- Results: Eight (4.5%) patients tested positive for ADA, and there were no NAbs detected at any time throughout the study. Ninety (48.1%) patients reported treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs), of which 27 (14.4%) reported injection-site reactions, and 43 (23.0%) reported infections. The majority of AEs were mild or moderate in severity, and the drug was well tolerated. Throughout the duration of the study (week 4 to week 24), there was a progressive increase in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)-defined responses (ACR20: 55.9%–82.0%, ACR50: 16.1%–57.8%, and ACR70: 3.2%–26.7%) from baseline and the proportion of patients achieving low disease activity and remission, with a corresponding decrease in measures of disease activity. ----- Conclusion: The immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of ETN manufactured using the SFHCM process were similar to the current approved ETN formulation.     An SNP-Based Linkage Map for Zebrafish Reveals Sex Determination Loci

    A surprising diversity of mechanisms controls sex determination of vertebrate organisms, even among closely related species. Both genetic and temperature-dependent systems of sex determination have been described in teleost fish. In the common zebrafish model organism, heteromorphic sex chromosomes are not observed, and the potential role of a genetic component of sex determination remains largely unknown. Here we report a genome-wide linkage study of sex determination in zebrafish using a novel SNP genetic map. We identified loci on zebrafish chromosomes 5 (LOD score 7.9) and 16 (LOD score 9.3) governing sex determination as a complex trait, rather than as an XY or ZW genetic system. Each of these loci contains a prominent candidate gene with a conserved role in sex determination across additional species that suggest potential mechanisms of sex determination in zebrafish. The chromosome 5 locus harbors dmrt1, a key gene in sex determination from fruit flies to humans; mutation of the human DMRT1 ortholog is a cause of complete sex reversal of XY individuals. The chromosome 16 locus harbors cyp21a2; mutation of the human CYP21A2 ortholog is one of the more common causes of pseudohermaphroditism. Mutation detection at each of these candidate genes within the zebrafish cross identified hypomorphic variants on the female-associated allele of each locus. The two loci together accounted for 16% of variance of the trait. Interacting environmental cues are likely to be an additional important component of sex determination in zebrafish

    The state of the art in clinical knowledge management: An inventory of tools and techniques

    Purpose To explore the need for, and use of, high-quality, collaborative, clinical knowledge management (CKM) tools and techniques to manage clinical decision support (CDS) content. Methods In order to better understand the current state of the art in CKM, we developed a survey of potential CKM tools and techniques. We conducted an exploratory study by querying a convenience sample of respondents about their use of specific practices in CKM. Results The following tools and techniques should be priorities in organizations interested in developing successful computer-based provider order entry (CPOE) and CDS implementations: (1) a multidisciplinary team responsible for creating and maintaining the clinical content; (2) an external organizational repository of clinical content with web-based viewer that allows anyone in the organization to review it; (3) an online, collaborative, interactive, Internet-based tool to facilitate content development; (4) an enterprise-wide tool to maintain the controlled clinical terminology concepts. Even organizations that have been successfully using computer-based provider order entry with advanced clinical decision support features for well over 15 years are not using all of the CKM tools or practices that we identified. Conclusions If we are to further stimulate progress in the area of clinical decision support, we must continue to develop and refine our understanding and use of advanced CKM capabilities

    Outstanding Business Reference Sources: The 2010 Selection of Recent Titles

    Each year at the ALA Annual Conference, the Business Reference Sources Committee of RUSA’s Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) meets to select the outstanding business reference sources published since May of the previous year. With all due respect to the familiar and longstanding column title, committee members have come to think of our charge more broadly as finding the most outstanding business information sources, the better to reflect the evolving nature of the formats and means of accessing business information to meet reference needs. For 2010, the committee weeded titles proposed during 2009–10 down to fifteen that made the final review. Among those, the committee selected three as outstanding business information titles and an additional six as noteworthy titles. The works reviewed below cover such areas as economics, the music industry, corporate sustainability, retailing, brand valuation, the current and historical U.S. role in international trade, and an innovative new vehicle for affordable (or free) online access to premier instructional resources in business and economics
