    Use of Langmuir probes in non-Maxwellian space plasmas

    Disturbance of the Maxwellian plasma may occur in the vicinity of a spacecraft due to photoemission, interactions between the spacecraft and thermospheric gases, or electron emissions from other devices on the spacecraft. Significant non-Maxwellian plasma distributions may also occur in nature as a mixture of ionospheric and magnetospheric plasmas or secondaries produced by photoionization in the thermosphere or auroral precipitation. The general formulas for current collection (volt–ampere curves) by planar, cylindrical, and spherical Langmuir probes in isotropic and anisotropic non-Maxwellian plasmas are examined. Examples are given of how one may identify and remove the non-Maxwellian components in the Langmuir probe current to permit the ionospheric parameters to be determined. Theoretical volt–ampere curves presented for typical examples of non-Maxwellian distributions include: two-temperature plasmas and a thermal plasma with an energetic electron beam. If the nonionospheric electrons are Maxwellian at a temperature distinct from that of the ionosphere electrons, the volt–ampere curves can be fitted directly to obtain the temperatures and densities of both electron components without resorting to techniques that attempt to derive the plasma distribution from the current by taking derivatives. For an arbitrary isotropic distribution, the current for retarded particles is shown to be identical for the three geometries.     The Seiberg-Witten Map for a Time-dependent Background

    In this paper the Seiberg-Witten map for a time-dependent background related to a null-brane orbifold is studied. The commutation relations of the coordinates are linear, i.e. it is an example of the Lie algebra type.     A deformation of AdS_5 x S^5

    We analyse a one parameter family of supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity that includes AdS_5 x S^5. For small values of the parameter the solutions are causally well-behaved, but beyond a critical value closed timelike curves (CTC's) appear. The solutions are holographically dual to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a non-conformally flat background with non-vanishing R-currents. We compute the holographic energy-momentum tensor for the spacetime and show that it remains finite even when the CTC's appear. The solutions, as well as the uplift of some recently discovered AdS_5 black hole solutions, are shown to preserve precisely two supersymmetries.Comment: 16 pages, v2: typos corrected and references adde

    Black holes in Goedel-type universes with a cosmological constant

    We discuss supersymmetric black holes embedded in a Goedel-type universe with cosmological constant in five dimensions. The spacetime is a fibration over a four-dimensional Kaehler base manifold, and generically has closed timelike curves. Asymptotically the space approaches a deformation of AdS_5, which suggests that the appearance of closed timelike curves should have an interpretation in some deformation of D=4, N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory.     Noncommutative D-Brane in Non-Constant NS-NS B Field Background

    We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish, the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of mixed commutation relations among themselves.     Holocene range collapse of giant muntjacs and pseudo-endemism in the Annamite large mammal fauna

    Aim: To clarify the postglacial biogeography of the Annamite and eastern Chinese ungulate faunas, and determine whether current understanding of Asian mammalian biogeography is biased by pseudo-extinctions and pseudo-endemism associated with a historical extinction filter. Location: Modern-day specimens of giant muntjac (Muntiacus vuquangensis) from the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam were compared with zooarchaeological specimens of extinct giant muntjac (M. gigas) from eastern China, and with a reference sample of northern red muntjac (M. vaginalis) from China, Southeast Asia and South Asia. Methods: We analyzed a dataset of antler measurements using MANOVAs, PCAs and scaling relationships, to quantify morphometric variation between extinct and living giant muntjacs in relation to variation shown by a different sympatric large-bodied muntjac species. We also attempted ancient biomolecule analysis of Holocene samples from China. Results: Whereas the combined giant muntjac sample can be differentiated from the reference red muntjac sample in all of our multivariate morphometric analyses, no significant differences are shown between extinct and living giant muntjacs using any analyses, matching the pattern seen when comparing conspecific red muntjac samples from across the same geographic region. Main conclusions: We find no support for recognizing extinct and living giant muntjacs as distinct taxa, and postglacial populations from China and the Annamites should probably all be referred to M. gigas. The likely conspecificity of giant muntjacs across Eastern and Southeast Asia demonstrates that current-day Asian mammalian biogeography has been shaped by an extinction filter and challenges the idea that the Annamite region represents a cradle of evolution; instead, it may represent a refuge of diversity for some taxa, preserving remnant pseudo-endemic populations of species that have been extirpated across other parts of their former ranges

    Acoustic radiation controls friction: Evidence from a spring-block experiment

    Brittle failures of materials and earthquakes generate acoustic/seismic waves which lead to radiation damping feedbacks that should be introduced in the dynamical equations of crack motion. We present direct experimental evidence of the importance of this feedback on the acoustic noise spectrum of well-controlled spring-block sliding experiments performed on a variety of smooth surfaces. The full noise spectrum is quantitatively explained by a simple noisy harmonic oscillator equation with a radiation damping force proportional to the derivative of the acceleration, added to a standard viscous term.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures.     Goedel-type Universes and the Landau Problem

    We point out a close relation between a family of Goedel-type solutions of 3+1 General Relativity and the Landau problem in S^2, R^2 and H_2; in particular, the classical geodesics correspond to Larmor orbits in the Landau problem. We discuss the extent of this relation, by analyzing the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation in these backgrounds. For the R^2 case, this relation was independently noticed in hep-th/0306148.     Matrix theory origins of non-geometric fluxes

    We explore the origins of non-geometric fluxes within the context of M theory described as a matrix model. Building upon compactifications of Matrix theory on non-commutative tori and twisted tori, we formulate the conditions which describe compactifications with non-geometric fluxes. These turn out to be related to certain deformations of tori with non-commutative and non-associative structures on their phase space. Quantization of flux appears as a natural consequence of the framework and leads to the resolution of non-associativity at the level of the unitary operators. The quantum-mechanical nature of the model bestows an important role on the phase space. In particular, the geometric and non-geometric fluxes exchange their properties when going from position space to momentum space thus providing a duality among the two. Moreover, the operations which connect solutions with different fluxes are described and their relation to T-duality is discussed. Finally, we provide some insights on the effective gauge theories obtained from these matrix compactifications.Comment: 1+31 pages, reference list update

    Classical and Quantum Strings in compactified pp-waves and Godel type Universes

    We consider Neveu-Schwarz pp-waves with spacetime supersymmetry. Upon compactification of a spacelike direction, these backgrounds develop Closed Null Curves (CNCs) and Closed Timelike Curves (CTCs), and are U-dual to supersymmetric Godel type universes. We study classical and quantum strings in this background, with emphasis on the strings winding around the compact direction. We consider two types of strings: long strings stabilized by NS flux and rotating strings which are stabilized against collapse by angular momentum. Some of the latter strings wrap around CNCs and CTCs, and are thus a potential source of pathology. We analyze the partition function, and in particular discuss the effects of these string states. Although our results are not conclusive, the partition function seems to be dramatically altered due to the presence of CNCs and CTCs.
