    Do neutrons publish? A neutron publication survey 2005-2015

    Publication in scientific journals is the main product of scientific research. The amount of papers published, their placement in high impact journals, and their citations are used as a measure of the productivity of individual scientists, institutes or fields of science. To give a profound basis on the publication record and the quality of the publication efforts in neutron scattering, a survey has been done following the approach to use bibliographic databases. Questions to be addressed by this survey are: Is the productivity of research with neutrons changing over the years? Which is the geographic distribution in this field of research? Which ones are leading facilities? Is the quality of publications changing? The main results found are presented

    Approaching the Ground State of Frustrated A-site Spinels: A Combined Magnetization and Polarized Neutron Scattering Study

    We re-investigate the magnetically frustrated, {\it diamond-lattice-antiferromagnet} spinels FeAl2_2O4_4 and MnAl2_2O4_4 using magnetization measurements and diffuse scattering of polarized neutrons. In FeAl2_2O4_4, macroscopic measurements evidence a "cusp" in zero field-cooled susceptibility around 13~K. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility and {\it memory effect} experiments provide results that do not conform with a canonical spin-glass scenario in this material. Through polarized neutron scattering studies, absence of long-range magnetic order down to 4~K is confirmed in FeAl2_2O4_4. By modeling the powder averaged differential magnetic neutron scattering cross-section, we estimate that the spin-spin correlations in this compound extend up to the third nearest-neighbour shell. The estimated value of the Land\'{e} gg factor points towards orbital contributions from Fe2+^{2+}. This is also supported by a Curie-Weiss analysis of the magnetic susceptibility. MnAl2_2O4_4, on the contrary, undergoes a magnetic phase transition into a long-range ordered state below ≈\approx 40~K, which is confirmed by macroscopic measurements and polarized neutron diffraction. However, the polarized neutron studies reveal the existence of prominent spin-fluctuations co-existing with long-range antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic diffuse intensity suggests a similar short range order as in FeAl2_2O4_4. Results of the present work supports the importance of spin-spin correlations in understanding magnetic response of frustrated magnets like AA-site spinels which have predominant short-range spin correlations reminiscent of the "spin liquid" state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, double-column, accepted in Phys.     In today's markets, corporate social responsibility is a new consumer expectation. Organizations across all industries are trying to meet these expectations by building a positive reputation and sending a signal to their stakeholders. However, consumers’ environmental behavior is not always the result of their positive attitudes towards environmental issues. Potentially, their environmentally friendly attitudes are contradicted by their actual behavior. This means that people, who have positive attitudes about sustainable products and state that they would purchase them, may not actually buy them after all. In addition, consumers often do not wish to spend more money on buying sustainably, even if they have higher expectations towards sustainable products or companies. Further research is therefore needed to explain the gap between consumer awareness and actual purchasing behavior. In several contexts, environmentally friendly consumption, called sustainable consumption, has been explained by the theory of planned behavior (TPB), such as when buying food or apparel. Sustainable consumption often results from planned decisions rather than hedonic reasons.        &nbsp

    XYZ-polarisation analysis of diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from single crystals

    Studies of diffuse magnetic scattering largely benefit from the use of a multi-detector covering wide scattering angles. Therefore, the different contributions to the diffuse scattering that originate from magnetic, nuclear coherent, and nuclear spin-incoherent scattering can be separated by the so-called XYZ-polarization analysis. In the past this method has been successfully applied to the analysis of diffuse scattering by polycrystalline samples of magnetic disordered materials. Single crystal studies that exploit the vector properties of spin correlations are of particular interest for furthering our understanding of frustration effects in magnetism. Based on the symmetry properties of polarised scattering a suitable extension of the conventional XYZ method has been derived, which allows for the complete separation and the analysis of features of diffuse magnetic scattering from single crystals.Comment: 6 pages 2 figures, revised as published, one Eq. removed, minor corrections, typos correcte

    Inelastic neutron scattering study of crystal field excitations of Nd<sup>3+</sup> in NdFeAsO

    Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Nd3+ (J = 9/2) in the iron pnictide NdFeAsO. The crystal field level structures for both the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase of NdFeAsO are constructed. The variation of CEF excitations of Nd3+ reflects not only the change of local symmetry but also the change of magnetic ordered state of the Fe sublattice. By analyzing the crystal field interaction with a crystal field Hamiltonian, the crystal field parameters are obtained. It was found that the sign of the fourth and sixth-order crystal field parameters change upon the magnetic phase transition at 140 K, which may be due to the variation of exchange interactions between the 4f and conduction electrons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Magnetization, crystal structure and anisotropic thermal expansion of single-crystal SrEr2O4

    The magnetization, crystal structure, and thermal expansion of a nearly stoichiometric Sr1.04(3)_{1.04(3)}Er2.09(6)_{2.09(6)}O4.00(1)_{4.00(1)} single crystal have been studied by PPMS measurements and in-house and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. No evidence was detected for any structural phase transitions even up to 500 K. The average thermal expansions of lattice constants and unit-cell volume are consistent with the first-order Gr\"uneisen approximations taking into account only the phonon contributions for an insulator, displaying an anisotropic character along the crystallographic \emph{a}, \emph{b}, and \emph{c} axes. Our magnetization measurements indicate that obvious magnetic frustration appears below ∼\sim15 K, and antiferromagnetic correlations may persist up to 300 K.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure, 2 table

    Uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure effects in alpha-RuCl3 single crystals via thermal-expansion measurements

    We present high-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements of single crystalline alpha-RuCl3. An extremely hysteretic structural transition expanding over 100 K is observed by thermal- expansion along both crystallographic axes, which we attribute to a change of stacking sequence of the RuCl3 layers. Three magnetic transitions are observed, which we link to the different stacking sequences. Using our data and thermodynamic relations, we derive the uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure derivatives of all three magnetic transitions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic order should be totally suppressed by very moderate pressures of 0.3 GPa to 0.9 GPa. Finally, we discuss why our results differ from recent hydrostatic pressure measurements and suggest a possible route to reaching the spin-liquid state in alpha-RuCl3.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
