    Quantitative intersectional data (QUINTA): a #metoo case study

    This research began as an investigation of the #metoo movement, with the initial impetus to illuminate the voices located on the margins, those who often go unheard or are never recognized. This work aimed to understand the intersectional aspects of how these hashtag variations of the hashtag #metoo (i.e. #metoomosque, #churchtoo, #metoodisable, #metooqueer, #metoochina, etc) reveal the inequities of the #metoo movement on Twitter. The proliferation of these hashtag variations has often been ignored by scholars, and therefore absorbed into the larger #metoo movement conversation on Twitter. Therefore, the term `hashtag derivative\u27 was created to describe the variation on the theme of its original hashtag, strongly reflecting its composition. Moreover, a critical theory such as Intersectionality is well-equipped to explore how overlapping identities encounter structure social reality relationship to power. Amid a pandemic and racial unrest, the true capabilities of Intersectionality to describe inequities and injustices beyond the singular social position of race and gender are not widely understood. Data science, is not absolved of its role in inequities and injustices merely by dint of being a quantitative field that claims to ``objectivity\u27\u27. Social scientists have illuminated the racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, prejudice, bigotry, and bias embedded in data science\u27s technology, tools, and algorithms. This has, direct and indirectly, grave consequences on an entire community as a whole as well as marginalized communities. The application of Intersectionality into a quantitative field can provide researchers a formal structure to be more conscientious about how to critique, develop, and design their data science processes, while also reckoning with their own positioning in relationship to the data. In this way, Intersectionality is inclusive in terms of data equity yet adds an additional layer of accountability to the researcher. This research leads to the three critical contributions of this work: (1) creating a more concise terminology to describe the phenomenon of hashtag variation, known as hashtag derivatives, (2) defining the historical context of Intersectionality and building a formal case for this to be properly contextualized in the Computer Science field (in particular Data Science), and (3) developing the Quantitative Intersectional Data (QUINTA) Framework which data scientists and scholars can use to be more equitable, inclusive and accountable for their role in the data science process

    Should they? Mobile Biometrics and Technopolicy meet Queer Community Considerations

    Smartphones are integral to our daily lives and activities, providing us with basic functions like texting and phone calls to more complex motion-based functionalities like navigation, mobile gaming, and fitness-tracking. To facilitate these functionalities, smartphones rely on integrated sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes. These sensors provide personalized measurements that, in turn, contribute to tasks such as analyzing biometric data for mobile health purposes. In addition to benefiting smartphone users, biometric data holds significant value for researchers engaged in biometric identification research. Nonetheless, utilizing this user data for biometric identification tasks, such as gait and gender recognition, raises serious privacy, normative, and ethical concerns, particularly within the queer community. Concerns of algorithmic bias and algorithmically-driven dysphoria surface from a historical backdrop of marginalization, surveillance, harassment, discrimination, and violence against the queer community. In this position paper, we contribute to the timely discourse on safeguarding human rights within AI-driven systems by providing a sense of challenges, tensions, and opportunities for new data protections and biometric collection practices in a way that grapples with the sociotechnical realities of the queer community.Comment: To appear at 2023 ACM Conference on Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms, and Optimizatio

    Nondestructive Measurement of Orbital Angular Momentum for an Electron Beam

    Free electrons with a helical phase front, referred to as "twisted" electrons, possess an orbital angular momentum (OAM) and, hence, a quantized magnetic dipole moment along their propagation direction. This intrinsic magnetic moment can be used to probe material properties. Twisted electrons thus have numerous potential applications in materials science. Measuring this quantity often relies on a series of projective measurements that subsequently change the OAM carried by the electrons. In this Letter, we propose a nondestructive way of measuring an electron beam's OAM through the interaction of this associated magnetic dipole with a conductive loop. Such an interaction results in the generation of induced currents within the loop, which are found to be directly proportional to the electron's OAM value. Moreover, the electron experiences no OAM variations and only minimal energy losses upon the measurement, and, hence, the nondestructive nature of the proposed technique.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, and supplemental material that is comprised of text and 4 figure

    Analysis of Tokamak fusion device parameters affecting the efficiency of Tokamak operation

    Nuclear Power has been available as a relatively clean and reliable energy source for several decades. While tokamak engines have been in existence almost as long as successful fission-powered nuclear generators, they have not yet reached operational success for energy generation. This meta study collates key fusion device parameters and determines ideas on the applicability of fusion devices for energy. This paper supports the argument that toroidal tokamaks are not limited by volume whereas spherical designs have a potential volume limit, spherical tokamaks use a lower magnetic field current than toroidal tokamaks. Further scientific and engineering progress is required before tokamak devices can be a viable technology to be used for energy generation

    Psychometric properties of the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale adapted for people who use psychoactive substances.

    Background: People who consume psychoactive substances may experience situations of social stigma on the part of the society in general, and also situations of internalized-stigma derived from their own consumption of substances. The Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) scale has been shown to be valid and reliable to evaluate the internalized-stigma in people with severe mental disorders, but in Argentina there is no a Spanish version of this scale for use with people who use psychoactive substances. The objective of this work was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness instrument adapted for people who use psychoactive substances.Method: The work was carried out on a sample of 200 patients older than 18 years under treatment of rehabilitation by consumption of psychoactive substances in a public institution of the city of Córdoba (Argentina) between the years 2014 and 2016. The instrument used was the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) previously adapted for use in these groups of patients. It was determined the reliability of the scale through Cronbach’s coefficients ? and factorial structure was analyzed through an exploratory factor analysis.Results: The obtained coefficients showed a high reliability, while in the factorial structure emerged the 4 theoretical dimensions described by Ritsher, namely: social isolation, perceived discrimination, alienation and stereotyping. Conclusion: It is concluded that the scale adapted for people who use psychoactive substances is reliable and with an adequate factorial structure.</p
