Developing and testing intervention theory by incorporating a views synthesis into a qualitative comparative analysis of intervention effectiveness.
Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) was originally developed as a tool for cross-national comparisons in macrosociology, but its use in evaluation and evidence synthesis of complex interventions is rapidly developing. QCA is theory-driven and relies on Boolean logic to identify pathways to an outcome (eg, is the intervention effective or not?). We use the example of two linked systematic reviews on weight management programs (WMPs) for adults-one focusing on user views (a "views synthesis") and one focusing on the effectiveness of WMPs incorporating dietary and physical activity-to demonstrate how a synthesis of user views can supply a working theory to structure a QCA. We discuss how a views synthesis is especially apt to supply this working theory because user views can (a) represent a "middle-range theory" of the intervention; (b) bring a participatory, democratic perspective; and (c) provide an idiographic understanding of how the intervention works that external taxonomies may not be able to furnish. We then discuss the practical role that the views synthesis played in our QCA examining pathways to effectiveness: (a) by suggesting specific intervention features and sharpening the focus on the most salient features to be examined, (b) by supporting interpretation of findings, and (c) by bounding data analysis to prevent data dredging
Separation of biological materials in microgravity
Partition in aqueous two phase polymer systems is a potentially useful procedure in downstream processing of both molecular and particulate biomaterials. The potential efficiency of the process for particle and cell isolations is much higher than the useful levels already achieved. Space provides a unique environment in which to test the hypothesis that convection and settling phenomena degrade the performance of the partition process. Knight Shift Anomalies in Heavy Electron Materials
We calculate non-linear Knight Shift vs. susceptibility anomalies
for Ce ions possessing local moments in metals. The ions are modeled with the
Anderson Hamiltonian and studied within the non-crossing approximation (NCA).
The non-linearity diminishes with decreasing Kondo temperature
and nuclear spin- local moment separation. Treating the Ce ions as an
incoherent array in CeSn, we find excellent agreement with the observed Sn

Demixing of aqueous polymer two-phase systems in low gravity
When polymers such as dextran and poly(ethylene glycol) are mixed in aqueous solution biphasic systems often form. On Earth the emulsion formed by mixing the phases rapidly demixes because of phase density differences. Biological materials can be purified by selective partitioning between the phases. In the case of cells and other particulates the efficiency of these separations appears to be somewhat compromised by the demixing process. To modify this process and to evaluate the potential of two-phase partitioning in space, experiments on the effects of gravity on phase emulsion demixing were undertaken. The behavior of phase systems with essentially identical phase densities was studied at one-g and during low-g parabolic aircraft maneuvers. The results indicate the demixing can occur rather rapidly in space, although more slowly than on Earth. The demixing process was examined from a theoretical standpoint by applying the theory of Ostwald ripening. This theory predicts demizing rates many orders of magnitude lower than observed. Numerical implementation of a state variable model for friction
A general state variable model for friction has been incorporated into a finite element code for viscoplasticity. A contact area evolution model is used in a finite element model of a sheet forming friction test. The results show that a state variable model can be used to capture complex friction behavior in metal forming simulations. It is proposed that simulations can play an important role in the analysis of friction experiments and the development of friction models

The biological embedding of early-life socioeconomic status and family adversity in children's genome-wide DNA methylation.
AimTo examine variation in child DNA methylation to assess its potential as a pathway for effects of childhood social adversity on health across the life course.Materials & methodsIn a diverse, prospective community sample of 178 kindergarten children, associations between three types of social experience and DNA methylation within buccal epithelial cells later in childhood were examined.ResultsFamily income, parental education and family psychosocial adversity each associated with increased or decreased DNA methylation (488, 354 and 102 sites, respectively) within a unique set of genomic CpG sites. Gene ontology analyses pointed to genes serving immune and developmental regulation functions.ConclusionFindings provided support for DNA methylation as a biomarker linking early-life social experiences with later life health in humans

Synchronization in small-world systems
We quantify the dynamical implications of the small-world phenomenon. We
consider the generic synchronization of oscillator networks of arbitrary
topology, and link the linear stability of the synchronous state to an
algebraic condition of the Laplacian of the graph. We show numerically that the
addition of random shortcuts produces improved network synchronizability.
Further, we use a perturbation analysis to place the synchronization threshold
in relation to the boundaries of the small-world region. Our results also show
that small-worlds synchronize as efficiently as random graphs and hypercubes,
and more so than standard constructive graphs
