    Synthetic routes towards chiral calix[4]resorcinarenes

This thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 contains a brief overview of the literature reports in the area of calix[4]resorcinarene chemistry. The many methods available for the preparation and use of these macrocycles, their functionalisation on both the upper and lower rims and the use of Mannich reaction protocols for the introduction of chirality into these symmetrical molecules are discussed. Chapter 2 describes new methodology for the formation of a range of chiral calix[4]resorcinarenes, most notably the formation of tetra alkyloxy calix[4]resorcinarenes as racemic mixtures, which can then be separated as diastereoisomers following the use of new Mannich reaction methodology for the formation of tetra benzoxazine derivatives. One of these enantiomerically pure resorcinarenes has been used as a catalyst in the addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde. The attempts made at deepening the cavity of these macrocycles, by utilising Sonogashira coupling reactions, are also discussed. Chapter 3 contains the experimental details and analytical data for the successful reactions discussed in Chapter 2

'It's small steps, but that leads to bigger changes': evaluation of a nurture group intervention

This article presents the results of a small-scale research project that aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a part-time nurture group recently established in one primary school. Qualitative interviews were used to gather staff, pupil and parental perceptions about the nurture group. These focused on what difference the nurture group was making to the pupils concerned but also on views about what factors contributed to noted changes. All stakeholder groups identified areas of development for nurture group pupils. These included improved social skills, growth in personal confidence, greater engagement with academic tasks, and fewer incidences of undesirable behaviour. The evidence gathered so far suggests that the nurture group offered an effective way of supporting the social, emotional and behavioural skills of a group of 'at-risk' pupils. A range of factors thought to be important in achieving these outcomes are highlighted. These align broadly with the theoretical underpinnings of nurture groups

The origins and development of Zuwīla, Libyan Sahara: an archaeological and historical overview of an ancient oasis town and caravan centre

Zuwīla in southwestern Libya (Fazzān) was one of the most important early Islamic centres in the Central Sahara, but the archaeological correlates of the written sources for it have been little explored. This paper brings together for the first time a detailed consideration of the relevant historical and archaeological data, together with new AMS radiocarbon dates from several key monuments. The origins of the settlement at Zuwīla were pre-Islamic, but the town gained greater prominence in the early centuries of Arab rule of the Maghrib, culminating with the establishment of an Ibāḍī state ruled by the dynasty of the Banū Khaṭṭāb, with Zuwīla its capital. The historical sources and the accounts of early European travellers are discussed and archaeological work at Zuwīla is described (including the new radiocarbon dates). A short gazetteer of archaeological monuments is provided as an appendix. Comparisons and contrasts are also drawn between Zuwīla and other oases of the ash-Sharqiyāt region of Fazzān. The final section of the paper presents a series of models based on the available evidence, tracing the evolution and decline of this remarkable site

Asterocheres reginae, a new species of parasitic copepod (Siphonostomatoida: Asterocheridae) from a sponge in Belize

    No full text
Asterocheres reginae n. sp., of the family Asterocheridae, is described from the spongeAgelas clathrodes (Schmidt) collected at Carrie Bow Cay, Belize. It inhabits the internal canal system of its sponge host. A detailed description of both sexes is presented, and emphasis has been placed on the recognition of homologies between the limb segments and armature elements in accordance with the new evolutionary scheme established by Huys & Boxshall (1991)
