Resonant effects in random dielectric structures

Recently, a theory for artificial magnetism in two-dimensional photonic crystals has been developed for large wavelength using homogenization techniques. In this paper we pursue this approach within a rigorous stochastic framework: dielectric parallel nanorods are randomly disposed, each of them having, up to a large scaling factor, a random permittivity \epsilon(\omega) whose law is represented by a density on a window \Delta=[a,b]x[0,h] of the complex plane. We give precise conditions on the initial probability law (permittivity, radius and position of the rods) under which the homogenization process can be performed leading to a deterministic dispersion law for the effective permeability with possibly negative real part. Subsequently a limit analysis h->0, accounting a density law of \epsilon, which concentrates on the real axis, reveals singular behavior due to the presence of resonances in the microstructure

Bagging of Density Estimators

In this work we give new density estimators by averaging classical density estimators such as the histogram, the frequency polygon and the kernel density estimators obtained over different bootstrap samples of the original data. We prove the L 2-consistency of these new estimators and compare them to several similar approaches by extensive simulations. Based on them, we give also a way to construct non parametric pointwise confidence intervals for the target density

Aggregating density estimators: an empirical study

We present some new density estimation algorithms obtained by bootstrap aggregation like Bagging. Our algorithms are analyzed and empirically compared to other methods found in the statistical literature, like stacking and boosting for density estimation. We show by extensive simulations that ensemble learning are effective for density estimation like for classification. Although our algorithms do not always outperform other methods, some of them are as simple as bagging, more intuitive and has computational lower cost

Dans l’excellente collection dirigée avec la compétence qu’on lui connaît par notre collègue Daniel Tollet, paraît le premier ouvrage en français sur l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem. Il m’est agréable de dire tout le bien qu’il faut en penser puisque nos lecteurs savent qu’il s’agit d’un membre du centre qui a mené cette riche étude en parallèle avec ses autres activités.
