The neonicotinoid insecticide Imidacloprid repels pollinating flies and beetles at field-realistic concentrations

Neonicotinoids are widely used systemic insecticides which, when applied to flowering crops, are translocated to the nectar and pollen where they may impact upon pollinators. Given global concerns over pollinator declines, this potential impact has recently received much attention. Field exposure of pollinators to neonicotinoids depends on the concentrations present in flowering crops and the degree to which pollinators choose to feed upon them. Here we describe a simple experiment using paired yellow pan traps with or without insecticide to assess whether the commonly used neonicotinoid imidacloprid repels or attracts flying insects. Both Diptera and Coleoptera exhibited marked avoidance of traps containing imidacloprid at a field-realistic dose of 1 μg L-1, with Diptera avoiding concentrations as low as 0.01 μg L-1. This is to our knowledge the first evidence for any biological activity at such low concentrations, which are below the limits of laboratory detection using most commonly available techniques. Catch of spiders in pan traps was also slightly reduced by the highest concentrations of imidacloprid used (1 μg L-1), but catch was increased by lower concentrations. It remains to be seen if the repellent effect on insects occurs when neonicotinoids are present in real flowers, but if so then this could have implications for exposure of pollinators to neonicotinoids and for crop pollination. © 2013 Easton, Goulson

Achieving equal standards in medical student education: is a national exit examination the answer?

The document attached has been archived with permission from the editor of the Medical Journal of Australia. An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Although it is commonly assumed that the quality of medical school education in Australia is uniformly high, there is no national process for assessing its outcomes. There is substantial variability in the content of medical school curricula, and the process of curriculum change is becoming more challenging because of intense competition for time and space in the course. A national exit examination could provide a uniform standard of assessment for all medical school graduates in Australia, as well as foreign graduates applying to work in Australia. Such an examination could assess medical school outcomes, monitor the effects of curriculum change, and provide a benchmark for new medical schools that would help medical curricula evolve to better meet society’s needs.Bogda Koczwara, Martin H N Tattersall, Michael B Barton, Brendon J Coventry, Joanna M Dewar, Jeremy L Millar, Ian N Olver, Max A Schwarz, Darren L Starmer, David R Turner and Martin R Stockler, for the Cancer Council of Australia Oncology Education Committe

The Lord\u27s Prayer in the Eucharist

This paper presents an exegetical analysis of the petitions of the Lord\u27s Prayer followed by an historical and theological review of its ritual usage within the communion rite. By examining each petition in detail, we see a close parallel between the contents of this prayer and the contents of the Eucharistic Prayer. This prayer helps us to more concretely grasp what it means to be a eucharistic people. Given this understanding the Lord\u27s Prayer\u27s ritual usage is examined throughout history. In particular, we look at shifts in who prays the various parts of the prayer during the liturgy, the contents and the method of praying the embolism, and the presence of the doxology. This paper concludes by suggesting that one area not addressed by the liturgical reforms of Vatican II, the position of the Lord\u27s Prayer within the communion rite, is in need of attention. The Lord\u27s Prayer would function more clearly as preparation for communion if it were placed after the fraction rite, as it was prior to the 6th-century reforms of Gregory the Great
