Canadian national sport organisations’ use of the web for relationship marketing in promoting sport participation
Sport participation development requires a systematic process which involves knowledge creation, dissemination and interactions between National Sport Organisations, participants, clubs and associations as well as other agencies. Using a relationship marketing approach (Grönroos, 1997, Gummesson, 2002, Olkkonen, 1999), this paper addressed the question ‘How do Canadian NSOs use the Web, in terms of functionality and services offered, to create and maintain relationships with sport participants and their sport delivery partners?’ Ten Canadian NSOs’ websites were examined: functionality was analysed using Burgess and Cooper’s (2000) eMICA model, while NSOs’ utilisation of the Internet to establish and maintain relationships with sport participants was analysed using Wang, Head and Archer’s (2000) relationship-building process model for the Web. It was found that Canadian NSOs were receptive to the use of the Web, but their information-gathering and dissemination activities, which make-up the relationship-building process, appear sparse, and in some cases are lagging behind the voluntary sector in the country

Memory in Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Behavioral evidence concerning memory in high-functioning forms of autism (HFA) and in moderately low-functioning autism (M-LFA) is reviewed and compared. Findings on M-LFA are sparse. However, it is provisionally concluded that memory profiles in HFA and M-LFA (relative to ability-matched controls) are similar, but that declarative memory impairments are more extensive in M-LFA than in HFA. Specifically, both groups have diminished memory for emotion- or person-related stimuli. Regarding memory for non-social stimuli, both groups probably have mental-age appropriate nondeclarative memory; and within declarative memory, both groups have mental-age appropriate immediate free recall of within-span or supra-span lists of unrelated items, as well as cued recall and paired associate learning. By contrast, recognition is largely unimpaired in HFA but moderately impaired in M-LFA; and free recall of meaningful or structured stimuli is moderately impaired in HFA but more severely impaired in M-LFA. Theoretical explanations of data on declarative memory in HFA identify problems in the integrative processing, or the consolidation and storage, of complex stimuli; or a specific problem of recollection. Proposed neural substrates include the following: disconnectivity of primary sensory and association areas; dysfunctions of medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus or posterior parietal lobe; or combinations of these associated with neural disconnectivity. Hypothetically, perirhinal dysfunction might explain the more extensive declarative memory impairments in M-LFA. Foreseeable consequences of uneven memory abilities in HFA and M-LFA are outlined, including possible effects on language and learning in M-LFA. Finally, priorities for future research are identified, highlighting the urgent need for research on memory in lower-functioning individuals

Importance of malnutrition and associated diseases in the management of Zenker's diverticulum
AbstractObjectivesTo study the impact of malnutrition on a population treated for Zenker's diverticulum and to look for the causes of persistence or recurrence of dysphagia after endoscopic surgery.Material and methodsThis retrospective study included 30 patients with Zenker's diverticulum treated by endoscopy. All swallowing disorders and manifestations of malnutrition and postoperative improvement in and/or recurrence of symptoms were noted.ResultsNutritional status was evaluated for 26 patients. Before surgery, 54% suffered from malnutrition, which was severe in 31%; 28.6% of the cases with malnutrition showed postoperative complications, versus 8.3% of cases without baseline malnutrition. Ninety percent of patients (n=27) declared complete resolution of symptoms. Nine patients presented recurrence of dysphagia, including 6 with recurrence of Zenker's diverticulum and 3 with, respectively, inclusion body myopathy, esophageal hypertonia and central disease.ConclusionMalnutrition should be quantified and treated before and after surgery for Zenker's diverticulum to prevent complications and decrease mortality. Associated pathologies should be systematically screened for, especially in case of recurrence of swallowing disorder without recurrence of Zenker's diverticulum
Electrostatic Properties of Polymers Subjected to Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment; Correlation of Experimental Results with Atomistic Modeling
this study, PE, PTFE, PS and PMMA were exposed to a He+O2, APGD and pre and post treatment surface chemistries were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Semi-empirical and ab-initio calculations were performed to correlate the experimental results with sonic plausible molecular and electronic structure features of the oxidation process. For the PE and PS, significant surface oxidation showing C-O, C=O, and O-C=O bonding, and a decrease in the surface contact angles was observed. For the PTFE and PM MA, little change in the surface composition was observed. The molecular modeling calculations were performed on single and multiple oligomers and showed regardless of oxidation mechanism, e.g. -OH, =O or a combination thereof, experimentally observed levels of surface oxidation were unlikely to lead to a significant change in the electronic structure of PE and PS, and that the increased hydrophilic properties are the primary reason for the observed changes in its electrostatic behavior. Calculations for PTFE and PMMA argue strongly against significant oxidation of those materials, as confirmed by the XPS results
RLZAP: Relative Lempel-Ziv with Adaptive Pointers
Relative Lempel-Ziv (RLZ) is a popular algorithm for compressing databases of
genomes from individuals of the same species when fast random access is
desired. With Kuruppu et al.'s (SPIRE 2010) original implementation, a
reference genome is selected and then the other genomes are greedily parsed
into phrases exactly matching substrings of the reference. Deorowicz and
Grabowski (Bioinformatics, 2011) pointed out that letting each phrase end with
a mismatch character usually gives better compression because many of the
differences between individuals' genomes are single-nucleotide substitutions.
Ferrada et al. (SPIRE 2014) then pointed out that also using relative pointers
and run-length compressing them usually gives even better compression. In this
paper we generalize Ferrada et al.'s idea to handle well also short insertions,
deletions and multi-character substitutions. We show experimentally that our
generalization achieves better compression than Ferrada et al.'s implementation
with comparable random-access times
Amp\`ere-Class Pulsed Field Emission from Carbon-Nanotube Cathodes in a Radiofrequency Resonator
Pulsed field emission from cold carbon-nanotube cathodes placed in a
radiofrequency resonant cavity was observed. The cathodes were located on the
backplate of a conventional -cell resonant cavity operating at
1.3-GHz and resulted in the production of bunch train with maximum average
current close to 0.7 Amp\`ere. The measured Fowler-Nordheim characteristic,
transverse emittance, and pulse duration are presented and, when possible,
compared to numerical simulations. The implications of our results to

On the dynamics of coupled S=1/2 antiferromagnetic zig-zag chains
We investigate the elementary excitations of quasi one-dimensional S=1/2
systems built up from zig-zag chains with general isotropic exchange constants,
using exact (Lanczos) diagonalization for 24 spins and series expansions
starting from the decoupled dimer limit. For the ideal one-dimensional zig-zag
chain we discuss the systematic variation of the basic (magnon) triplet
excitation with general exchange parameters and in particular the presence of
practically flat dispersions in certain regions of phase space. We extend the
dimer expansion in order to include the effects of 3D interactions on the
spectra of weakly interacting zig-zag chains. In an application to KCuCl_3 we
show that this approach allows to determine the exchange interactions between
individual pairs of spins from the spectra as determined in recent neutron

Memory, learning and language in autism spectrum disorder
Background and aims: The ‘dual-systems’ model of language acquisition has been used by Ullman and colleagues to explain patterns of strength and weakness in the language of higher-functioning people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, intact declarative/explicit learning is argued to compensate for a deficit in non-declarative/implicit procedural learning, constituting an example of the so-called ‘see-saw’ effect. Ullman and Pullman (2015) extended their argument concerning a see-saw effect on language in ASD to cover other perceived anomalies of behaviour, including impaired acquisition of social skills. The aim of this paper is to present a critique of Ullman and colleagues’ claims, and to propose an alternative model of links between memory systems and language in ASD.
Main contribution: We argue that a 4-systems model of learning, in which intact semantic and procedural memory are used to compensate for weaknesses in episodic memory and perceptual learning, can better explain patterns of language ability across the autistic spectrum. We also argue that attempts to generalise the ‘impaired implicit learning/spared declarative learning’ theory to other behaviours in ASD are unsustainable.
Conclusions: Clinically significant language impairments in ASD are under-researched, despite their impact on everyday functioning and quality of life. The relative paucity of research findings in this area lays it open to speculative interpretation which may be misleading.
Implications: More research is need into links between memory/learning systems and language impairments across the spectrum. Improved understanding should inform therapeutic intervention, and contribute to investigation of the causes of language impairment in ASD with potential implications for prevention
