    Circularity of objects in images

    Get PDF
The most commonly used measure of circularity of objects in images is shown to give incorrect results. An alternative measure of circularity based on the distance between a set and a discrete disk is described. The alternative measure gives circularity zero (distance zero) for discrete disks and values in the range (0,1) for discrete sets which are not disks

Interpolation by polynomials with non-negative coefficients

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of determining whether a polynomial of a given order and having only nonnegative coefficients can be found to interpolate a given set of positive data. This problem arises in the design of maximally robust integrating feedback controllers for linear discrete-time plants and is also relevant to the design of nonovershooting control systems. We present an algorithm for determining whether such a polynomial exists for given interpolation data

Mammographic Mass Detection with Statistical Region Merging

    Get PDF
An automatic method for detection of mammographic masses is presented which utilizes statistical region merging for segmentation (SRM) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for classification. The performance of the scheme was evaluated on 36 images selected from the local database of mammograms and on 48 images taken from the Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM). The Az value (area under the ROC curve) for classifying each region was 0.90 for the local dataset and 0.96 for the images from DDSM. Results indicate that SRM segmentation can form part of an robust and efficient basis for analysis of mammograms

The colony morphology is characterized using clustered shape primitives (CSPs), which are learned automatically from the data and thus do not require a list of predefined features or a priori knowledge of the shape. The power of CSPs is demonstrated through the classification of pseudohyphal yeast colonies known to produce different morphologies. The classifier categorizes the yeast colonies considered with an accuracy of 0.969 and standard deviation 0.041, demonstrating that CSPs capture differences in morphology, while CSPs are found to provide greater discriminatory power than spatial indices previously used to quantify pseudohyphal growth. The analysis demonstrates that CSPs provide a promising avenue for analysing morphology in high-throughput assays

Vitamin A and marbling attributes: Intramuscular fat hyperplasia effects in cattle

© 2017 Elsevier. This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Twenty Angus steers were fed a diet low in β-carotene and vitamin A for 10 months. Ten steers were supplemented with vitamin A weekly, while the other ten steers did not receive any additional vitamin A. The results demonstrated that the restriction of vitamin A intake increased intramuscular fat (IMF) by 46%. This was a function of the total number of marbling flecks increasing by 22% and the average marbling fleck size increasing by 14%. Vitamin A restriction resulted in marbling flecks that were less branched (22%) and slightly more round (4%) with an increased minor axis length (7%). However, restricting vitamin A did not affect the size of the intramuscular or subcutaneous adipocyte cells or the subcutaneous fat depth. The results suggest that vitamin A affects the amount of marbling and other attributes of the marbling flecks due to hyperplasia rather than hypertrophy. This may explain why vitamin A restriction specifically affects IMF rather than subcutaneous fat deposition

Hvilke utfordringer ligger i behandlingen for dobbeltdiagnose-pasienter, og hvordan skal man legge til rette for en god behandling?

A method based on sublevel sets is presented for refining segmentation of screening mammograms. Initial segmentation is provided by an adaptive pyramid (AP) scheme which is viewed as seeding of the final segmentation by sublevel sets. Performance is tested with and without prior anisotropic smoothing and is compared to refinement based on component merging. The combination of anisotropic smoothing, AP segmentation and sublevel refinement is found to outperform other combinations
