Prevalence of Salmonella in juvenile dogs affected with parvoviral enteritis

Salmonellosis is a disease of major zoonotic importance and canine parvovirus is a potentially fatal cause of canine enteritis with a world-wide distribution. Persistent isolation of Salmonella during routine environmental sampling surveys of a hospital ward, reserved for the treatment of dogs with canine parvovirus infection, prompted investigation into a possible source. We hypothesised that dogs affected by canine parvovirus would have a higher prevalence of faecal salmonellae compared to an apparently healthy cohort. Seventy-four client-owned dogs naturally infected with canine parvovirus and 42 apparently healthy client-owned dogs were included in the study. This prospective, longitudinal, observational study was conducted over an 18-month period. Fresh faecal samples were collected from dogs aged 6 weeks to 9 months diagnosed with canine parvovirus infection and admitted for treatment, and from apparently healthy dogs presented for vaccination or routine hospital procedures. Faeces were submitted for the isolation, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and serotyping of salmonellae. The prevalence of faecal Salmonella shedding was 22% and 31% for the affected and apparently healthy dogs, respectively, which was not statistically different. No significant associations between Salmonella status and possible risk factors or continuous variables such as age, body weight and duration of hospitalisation were identified. All the Salmonella isolates (n = 32) were resistant to penicillin G, lincomycin and tylosin. Salmonellae from nine different serotypes were identified. The prevalence of Salmonella shedding in both groups was higher than that commonly reported, yet similar to those in previous reports on young dogs, shelter dogs or dogs fed a raw meat diet

Human rights in diverse education contexts

    Get PDF
The focus of this publication is on answering the central research question: How can Human Rights be advanced with regard to different kinds of diversities, and in different educational settings? The publication pays special attention to the advancement of human rights in a variety of education-related contexts, in keeping with human rights as a declared national priority for both society at large and the education system. One strategic priority of the Faculty of Education is research based on market requirements and needs. This book strives towards meeting this expectation by directly aiming at building human rights and social justice in the South African society, public schools and higher education institutions. Adjudication in the education context of the constitutional values of dignity, equality and freedom focusses regularly on learners. The book highlights the value of education for full-fledged citizenship by delineating what schooling should entail to inspire learners towards both claiming equal freedoms and rights and taking accountability for the responsibilities attached to citizenship

Ar plasma induced deep levels in epitaxial n-GaAs

Ar plasma etching of n-type (Si doped) GaAs introduces several electron traps (Ec - 0.04 eV, Ec - 0.07 eV, Ec - 0.19 eV, Ec - 0.31 eV, Ec - 0.53 eV, and Ec - 0.61 eV). The trap, Ec - 0.04 eV, labelled E10 and having a trap signature similar to irradiation induced defect E1, appears to be metastable. Ec - 0.31 eV and Ec - 0.61 eV are metastable too and they are similar to the M3/M4 defect configuration present in hydrogen plasma exposed n-GaAs.South African National Research Foundationhttp://jap.aip.org/nf201

The SARAO MeerKAT 1.3 GHz Galactic Plane Survey

    Get PDF
We present the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (SMGPS), a 1.3 GHz continuum survey of almost half of the Galactic Plane (251○ ≤l ≤ 358○ and 2○ ≤l ≤ 61○ at |b| ≤ 1 5). SMGPS is the largest, most sensitive and highest angular resolution 1 GHz survey of the Plane yet carried out, with an angular resolution of 8″ and a broadband RMS sensitivity of ∼10–20 μJy beam−1. Here we describe the first publicly available data release from SMGPS which comprises data cubes of frequency-resolved images over 908–1656 MHz, power law fits to the images, and broadband zeroth moment integrated intensity images. A thorough assessment of the data quality and guidance for future usage of the data products are given. Finally, we discuss the tremendous potential of SMGPS by showcasing highlights of the Galactic and extragalactic science that it permits. These highlights include the discovery of a new population of non-thermal radio filaments; identification of new candidate supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae and planetary nebulae; improved radio/mid-IR classification of rare Luminous Blue Variables and discovery of associated extended radio nebulae; new radio stars identified by Bayesian cross-matching techniques; the realisation that many of the largest radio-quiet WISE H II region candidates are not true H II regions; and a large sample of previously undiscovered background H I galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance

THT process analysis and recommendations for THT improvement

    No full text
The non-adherence to agreed Train Handling Times (THT) can cause fines of up to R250 000 for XCSA. Train resources are under pressure and the THT process is unstable. Several factors are contributing to the THT not achieving the target of 12 hours. This document explains the study undertaken to establish the causes for poor THT performance and provides time study results, as well as recommendations to improve THT’s for Boschmans Colliery. The train handling and loading activities at Boschmans require a number of different resources and stakeholders to work together effectively. Coordination, measurement and reporting are critical management tools that should be used to effectively manage the process. The root cause of the problem is multi dimensional, which also explains the variance of the THT measures over the last six months. This study therefore recommends the implementation of key measures to manage the important parameters as identified earlier in this report.Thesis (B Eng.
