Anti-telephones in transformation optics: metamaterials with closed null geodesics

We apply the methods of transformation optics to theoretical descriptions of spacetimes that support closed null geodesic curves. The metric used is based on frame dragging spacetimes, such as the van Stockum dust or the Kerr black hole. Through transformation optics, this metric is analogous to a material that in theory should allow for communication between past and future. Presented herein is a derivation and description of the spacetime and the resulting permeability, permittivity, and magneto-electric couplings that a material would need in order for light in the material to follow closed null geodesics. We also address the paradoxical implications of such a material, and demonstrate why such a material would not actually result in a violation of causality. A full derivation of the Plebanski equations is also included.Comment: Submitted to Phys Rev D. This is a pre-print, uploaded here in hopes of wider review and community feedbac

Digitizing zone maps, using modified LARSYS program

    Get PDF
A method for digitizing zone maps is presented, starting with colored images and producing a final one-channel digitized tape. This method automates the work previously done interactively on the Image-100 and Data Analysis System computers of the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Earth Observations Division (EOD). A color-coded map was digitized through color filters on a scanner to form a digital tape in LARSYS-2 or JSC Universal format. The taped image was classified by the EOD LARSYS program on the basis of training fields included in the image. Numerical values were assigned to all pixels in a given class, and the resulting coded zone map was written on a LARSYS or Universal tape. A unique spatial filter option permitted zones to be made homogeneous and edges of zones to be abrupt transitions from one zone to the next. A zoom option allowed the output image to have arbitrary dimensions in terms of number of lines and number of samples on a line. Printouts of the computer program are given and the images that were digitized are shown

    An eight-neighbor filter for LARSYS

    Get PDF
An eight-neighbor filter was developed for the LARSYS program. It is used in cleaning zones and sharpening boundaries during the digitization of hand-painted zone maps, in making computer-based vegetation zones more homogeneous, and in classification of natural images, such as LANDSAT or other multispectral imagery

Housing Issues in Boston: Guidelines for New Policy and Program Perspectives

Urban stagnation and turbulence, the roller-coaster trends In the national and local economy and the vicissitudes of national, state and local public policies have left their mark on Boston\u27s residential neighborhoods and housing markets. Boston\u27s response to the new opportunities of public policy during the sixties and seventies was to take full advantage of urban renewal, assis ted-housing production and housing rehabilitation. Large-scale activities reshaped the occupancy patterns and market strengths of residential neighborhoods. By mid-1975, however, except for continuing growth in the City\u27s subsidized housing stock, Boston\u27s housing future looked bleak. There was pervasive evidence of a growing housing problem—physical neglect in public housing, exacerbated by major changes in tenant occupancy and acknowledged powerlessness of the tenant constituency to effect improvements; an increasing number of mortgage defaults, assignments or foreclosures in the large inventory of HUD-assisted multifamily rental housing; and the eroding effects on conventionally-financed private rental housing of rent regulation, inflation and high interest costs. Boston was experiencing relative stagnation in its housing markets. Residential property values in the strongest neighborhoods were barely able to keep pace with inflation while those in transitional and weak housing markets seemed to face an uncertain future

The Electoral Connection in Court: How Sentencing Responds to Voter Preferences

Do elected judges tailor criminal sentences to the electorate’s ideology? Utilizing sentencing data from North Carolina’s Superior Courts—which transitioned from statewide to local elections in 1996—we study whether judges are obliging to voters’ preferences. We find some evidence of responsiveness: judges from liberal districts were more lenient, while those from moderately conservative districts assigned harsher sentences. Judges from increasingly conservative districts did not change their sentencing patterns, which leads to lower re-election rates. These findings suggest that judges adapt their behavior to retain office, or else they are held accountable by the public

Random pro-p groups, braid groups, and random tame Galois groups

We introduce a heuristic prediction for the distribution of the isomorphism class of the Galois group of the maximal pro-p extension of Q unramified outside a "random" set of primes. This is guided by reasoning similar to that governing the Cohen-Lenstra conjectures. We conclude by describing theoretical and experimental evidence for our heuristic
