Wavelet transform for the evaluation of peak intensities in flow-injection analysis
The application of the wavelet transform in the determination of peak intensities in flow-injection analysis was studied with regard to its properties of minimizing the effects of noise and baseline drift. The results indicate that for white noise and a favourable peak shape a signal-to-noise ratio of 2 can be tolerated at the 5% error level, which means that a significant reduction in the detection limit can be obtained in comparison with the classical signal-processing methods. With regard to the influence of a changing baseline it was found that its d.c. level has a negligible effect, but a linear or exponentially rising baseline introduces an error that depends on the chosen frequency of the wavelet that is used to determine the peak intensity. The optimum choice of this frequency, in turn, depends on the shape of the peak that is studied. In this respect significant differences were observed for pure Gaussian and exponentially modified Gaussian peaks
A knowledge-based system for the automatic chronopotentiometric elucidation of electrode reaction mechanisms
A knowledge-based system for the elucidation of electrode reaction mechanisms based on chronopotentiometric experiments is described. The system runs the diagnostic experiments and uses the results in the reasoning process. New mechanistic knowledge can be added directly to its knowledge base in the form of production rules. The system is fully modular and its domain- specific modules can easily be changed for application to other electrochemical techniques. Correct operation of the system is demonstrated with the familiar reduction mechanisms of cadmium (II), zinc (II), cystamine and cinnamaldehyde
The Detection of a 3.5-h Period in the Classical Nova Velorum 1999 (V382 Vel) and the Long Term Behavior of the Nova Light Curve
We present CCD photometry, light curve and time series analysis of the
classical nova V382 Vel (N Vel 1999). The source was observed for 2 nights in
2000, 21 nights in 2001 and 7 nights in 2002 using clear filters. We report the
detection of a distinct period in the light curve of the nova P=0.146126(18) d
(3.5 h). The period is evident in all data sets, and we interpret it as the
binary period of the system. We also measured an increase in the amplitude
modulation of the optical light (in magnitude) by more than 55% from 2000 to
2001 and about 64% from 2001 to 2002. The pulse profiles in 2001 show
deviations from a pure sinusoidal shape which progressively become more
sinusoidal by 2002. The main cause of the variations in 2001 and 2002 can be
explained with the occultation of the accretion disk by the secondary star. We
interpret the observed deviations from a pure sinusoidal shape as additional
flux resulting from the aspect variations of the irradiated face of the
secondary star.Comment: 16 pages and 4 figures, accepted as it stands to be published in the

Wess-Zumino-Witten model off criticality
We study the renormalization group flow properties of the Wess-Zumino-Witten
model in the region of couplings between and , by
evaluating the two-loop Zamolodchikov's -function. We also discuss the
region of negative couplings.Comment: 8 page
Impulse-response functions of several detectors used in flow-injection analysis
A procedure for the determination of the impulse-response function of a detector is given. Its application to photometers, ion-sensitive field effect transistors, a potentiometric detector at constant current and a voltammetric detector shows that the impulse-response function can be used to obtain specific information about the performance of the detector in the manifold. This function clearly shows the contribution of the detector to the peak broadening and how the detector generates the final signal from the presented concentration profile. From this information one could derive improvements to the detector, such as changing the construction of the detector cell, minimizing the influence of other parts of the manifold or adapting the attached electronics
Spectral imbalance and the normalized dissipation rate of turbulence
The normalized turbulent dissipation rate is studied in decaying
and forced turbulence by direct numerical simulations, large-eddy simulations,
and closure calculations. A large difference in the values of is
observed for the two types of turbulence. This difference is found at moderate
Reynolds number, and it is shown that it persists at high Reynolds number,
where the value of becomes independent of the Reynolds number, but
is still not unique. This difference can be explained by the influence of the
nonlinear cascade time that introduces a spectral disequilibrium for
statistically nonstationary turbulence. Phenomenological analysis yields simple
analytical models that satisfactorily reproduce the numerical results. These
simple spectral models also reproduce and explain the increase of
at low Reynolds number that is observed in the simulations
Stability constants for some divalent metal ion/crown ether complexes in methanol determined by polarography and conductometry
Stability constants in methanol at 25.0°C were evaluated for the complexes of the divalent cations Ca2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, Co2+ and Cu2+ with the macrocyclic polyethers 15-crown-5 (15C5), 18-crown-6 (18C6), dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8). The log K values of the 1:1 complexes were generally in the range 2.1–4.2, which is low in comparison to the values of the corresponding crown ether/alkali metal ion complexes. M2L complexes were observed for the systems Pb2+/18C6, Pb2+/DC18C6, Ca2+/DC18C6 and Cu2+/D18C6, whereas ML2 complexes were found for Ca2+/18C6 and Cu2+/18C6. Within the series of complexes studied, there was no clear relationship between cation diameter and hole size
Decuplet baryon magnetic moments in a QCD-based quark model beyond quenched approximation
We study the decuplet baryon magnetic moments in a QCD-based quark model
beyond quenched approximation. Our approach for unquenching the theory is based
on the heavy baryon perturbation theory in which the axial couplings for baryon
- meson and the meson-meson-photon couplings from the chiral perturbation
theory are used together with the QM moment couplings. It also involves the
introduction of a form factor characterizing the structure of baryons
considered as composite particles. Using the parameters obtained from fitting
the octet baryon magnetic moments, we predict the decuplet baryon magnetic
moments. The magnetic moment is found to be in good agreement with
experiment: is predicted to be compared to the
experimental result of (2.02 0.05) .Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure
