Third Graders Explore Sound Concepts through Online Research Compared to Making Musical Instruments

    Get PDF
This study is an exploration of several lessons on sound taught to third grade students using one of the Next Generation Science Standards (3-5-ETS1) and arts integration. A counterbalanced, pretest- posttest- distal posttest design experiment was conducted to compare student knowledge and attitudes between the control and experimental conditions. Control activities included learning about either stringed or percussion instruments (whichever not addressed in the experimental condition) through online searches for information and writing a factual paragraph; experimental activities included creating a percussion or stringed instrument using classroom art materials purchased with an imaginary budget. One group experienced the experimental condition focusing on stringed instruments while the experimental condition for the other group focused on percussion. Results indicated no significant differences on the posttest, distal posttest, or gain scores. Scoring of lesson products (control condition paragraphs compared to experimental condition student-made instruments) indicated a significant difference favoring the experimental condition with a medium effect size. Student attitudes at the time of the distal posttest indicated a significant difference in enjoyment favoring the experimental condition with a medium effect size; there was no significant difference in student attitudes of perceived learning. Although learning occurred in both conditions, students reported the more rewarding experience involved creating the sound making instruments

Exploring the Physics of Sound with STEAM-azing Third Graders

This practical article was based on a lesson conducted with third graders from an elementary school in the Midwest who were studying concepts about sound. The lesson activities address Next Generation Science Standards that include engineering concepts, along with integrating activities that support National Core Arts Standards. The students created instruments that made music but that were not the standard string, percussion or wind orchestral instruments that they had previously studied: string, percussion, or wind. Their instruments made of recycled materials included drum and shaker combinations, animal-shaped instruments, and instruments that combined three or more instruments

From Wasteland to Praxis: Uncertainty and Control in the Creative Process

This document provides written support for the thesis exhibition, From Wasteland to Praxis: Uncertainty and Control in the Creative Process. This body of work consists of a collection of prints that represent evidence of the creative process. These art objects are evidence of decisions, alterations, and intentions that reveal my conscious and unconscious progression in achieving goals. Each print was selected and organized for this exhibition while considering how past and present circumstances and the difficulty in communicating ideas has influenced a creative process and the experience of working as an artist. This collection of work validates uncertainty, anxiety and the desire to accept and challenge precision and perfection through the act of printmaking. I continuously attempt to understand my purpose for making prints and the process in which Imake them throughout my studio practice. Endeavoring to understand the creative process is the basis for the examination of the impulses, intuition and inspiration that informs the process from conception of ideas to a finalized composition and ultimately presentation in a gallery. The intent of this research is to reveal the connection between the subconscious and the act of creating a print. The findings of this inquiry validate misconceptions as well as certainties about my creative process

Summary : During the period of 18 months immediately after the war a higher occurrence of hafematogenous paranephritic infections has been recognised. Examination of the 14 such cases has shown that this higher incidence was probably due to increase of pyogenic infectpons of the skin and to impairment of general resistance because of hard circumstances connected with the wartime

A Fővárosi Földhivatal története II. rész

A tanulmány első része az ingatlanok számbavételére irányuló kezdeti törekvéseket, a földhivatali hálózat kialakulását, illetve a hivatalvezetők személyének bemutatásán keresztül a Fővárosi Földhivatal fejlődését, nehézségeit és eredményeit követte nyomon a rendszerváltásig, majd a kormányhivatali integrációig. A második rész a hivatal történetének újabb fejezetét az ismét bevezetett kettős, majd hármas irányítás tükrében vizsgálja, és az elektronikus ingatlan-nyilvántartási eljárásból következő, várhatóan jelentős mértékű szervezetátalakítás lehetséges irányait elemzi

Substance p immunoreactivity exhibits frequent colocalization with kisspeptin and neurokinin B in the human infundibular region.

Neurons synthesizing neurokinin B (NKB) and kisspeptin (KP) in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus represent important upstream regulators of pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurosecretion. In search of neuropeptides co-expressed in analogous neurons of the human infundibular nucleus (Inf), we have carried out immunohistochemical studies of the tachykinin peptide Substance P (SP) in autopsy samples from men (21-78 years) and postmenopausal (53-83 years) women. Significantly higher numbers of SP-immunoreactive (IR) neurons and darker labeling were observed in the Inf of postmenopausal women than in age-matched men. Triple-immunofluorescent studies localized SP immunoreactivity to considerable subsets of KP-IR and NKB-IR axons and perikarya in the infundibular region. In postmenopausal women, 25.1% of NKB-IR and 30.6% of KP-IR perikarya contained SP and 16.5% of all immunolabeled cell bodies were triple-labeled. Triple-, double- and single-labeled SP-IR axons innervated densely the portal capillaries of the infundibular stalk. In quadruple-labeled sections, these axons formed occasional contacts with GnRH-IR axons. Presence of SP in NKB and KP neurons increases the functional complexity of the putative pulse generator network. First, it is possible that SP modulates the effects of KP and NKB in axo-somatic and axo-dendritic afferents to GnRH neurons. Intrinsic SP may also affect the activity and/or neuropeptide release of NKB and KP neurons via autocrine/paracrine actions. In the infundibular stalk, SP may influence the KP and NKB secretory output via additional autocrine/paracrine mechanisms or regulate GnRH neurosecretion directly. Finally, possible co-release of SP with KP and NKB into the portal circulation could underlie further actions on adenohypophysial gonadotrophs
