Critical pedagogy and citizenship : Lorenzo Milani and the school of Barbiana
This article can also be found in:
Learning and Social Difference, Challenges for Public Education and Critical pedagogy. Boulder, Colorado: Paradigm, 2006. Chapter 8,This paper discusses the pedagogical challenge of providing an education that stresses the connection between learning and power and the potential, for social solidarity, of a collective approach to learning based on a process of what Freire and other critical pedagogues would call âcritical literacy.â
The stimulus for such a pedagogical approach to citizenship derives from the legacy of a radical and very controversial Tuscan priest, Don Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967), and the students from an isolated and impoverished farming community in the Mugello region of Tuscany who constituted the School of Barbiana. The pedagogical ideas emanating from Lorenzo Milani and his school of Barbiana remain a source of reference in debates about schooling and social activism in Italy and elsewhere. The key text to emerge from this school, Lettera a Una Professoressa (Letter to a Teacher), was an important source of reference during the turbulent âsessantottoâ (1968) period in Italy. The paper provides an analysis of this and other works with whihc Lorenzo Milani was connected.peer-reviewe
St Lawrence of Birgu before 1530
This paper focuses on the medieval cult of St Lawrence in the Maltese Islands
and investigates the documented origins of the parish dedicated to the saint in Birgu. In
particular, it considers the relationship that may have existed between this parish and the
chaplaincy of the Castrum Maris. It is concluded that the two entities were quite separate
and, indeed at times, at variance with each other.peer-reviewe
National and Private Ambitions in the Patronage of French Cardinals at the Papal Court (Fifteenth to Sixteenth centuries)
Few French cardinals left important traces in the form of architectural patronage in
Rome during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a period characterised by the alternation of
times of strong tension between the French kings and the Papacy, and phases of political
harmony. French cardinalsâ relations with Rome reflected such a changeable contingent
political situation: their position was extremely delicate because they owed obedience to the
pope, as princes of the church, and to their king, as French nobles and bishops. Generally,
their engagement was projected more towards France, typically in the areas of family influence,
than towards Rome. Nevertheless, some French cardinals, such as Guillaume dâEstouteville,
Jean Jouffroy, Jean de BilhĂšres, and Jean Du Bellay, were well-established in Rome,
participating in cultural life and artistic production. Analysing their architectural patronage
helps to evaluate if they were agents of the King of France aiming to promote, in part by
supporting art and architecture, royal policy at the papal court, or if they were driven by
personal ambitions. Comparing these men with the patronage of Thomas Leroyânot a
cardinal, but a Breton-prelate established in Rome where he undertook a brilliant career in the
Curiaâpermits us to place the conduct of cardinals in a more general context, and to verify if
it was different from that of other French resident prelates
Confini, viabilitĂ e bonifica agraria del territorio di "Tifernum Mataurense"
The work collects and summarises the results of decades of studies, excavations and research into the ancient Tifernum Mataurense (modern day S. Angelo in Vado, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino), an Apennine municipium in the upper Metauro valley, bordering the surrounding territories of Tifernum Tiberinum (CittĂ di Castello), Sestinum (Sestino), Pitinum Pisaurense (Macerata Feltria), Urvinum Mataurense (Urbino) and Pitinum Mergens (Acqualagna).
The issue of reconstructing historical borders and ancient transport systems is addressed both from an historical point of view, retracing and comparing the civic and religious history of the Tifernum communities, and from an archaeological point of view, by means of accurate references to the urban topography of the city, the physical geography of the area (mountains, rivers etc.) and to the persistence of roadways and place-names.
Scattered yet still evident traces of land cultivation and Roman centuriation survive, mainly in the lowland Tifernum areas, to the east and to the west of the city, along the course of the River Metauro and adjoining two road axes which run alongside the river bed on opposite banks
ITACA station classification: EC8 site classification based on 1:100.000 geological map
This activity was requested by the project coordinators since it was necessary to have an early
version of the recording stations classification in order to interface the ITACA database with
the REXEL software for the selection of natural accelerograms compatible with NTC2008
proposed reponse spectra.
Since the compilation of the monographs is ongoing and, at the same time, a cataloging for all
the 616 ITACA stations was immediately needed, a preliminary classification based solely on
geological data available at a homogeneous level for all the sites was undertaken. Using a
lithological map by INGV (unpublished), at a national scale (1:100,000), this goal has been
achieved. This map derives from the Geological Map of Italy at 1:100,000 scale, by merging
different geological formations, based on lithological and geological age criteria, in several
lithological units. Each unit was attributed an EC8 subsoil class.
The limits of this type of âgeologicalâ classification are well known, as it allows only a
approximate level of knowledge, but, as already mentioned, it was dictated by the urgency to
set up a first classification.
This classification based on lithological map was subsequently "corrected" using:
a) detailed geological data;
b) a geological "expert" evaluation;
c) H/V microtremors measurements;
d) photos of the sites;
e) Vs30 values from down-hole and cross-hole tests.
Main problems have been encountered where the site studied is near a geological limit
between two different soil categories detached from two classes, the
thickness of cover, rested on bedrock, is less than 20 m or landslides of some
importance are present. VS30 values are available for very few stations which are
denoted without asterisk in the âsubsoil categoryâ column
The reformation and sixteenth-century Malta
The Protestant Reformation, which began in Germany in 1518, met willing sympathizers everywhere in Europe. The condition of the Church had been much the same throughout Christendom: corruption, worldliness, spiritual lassitude, and immorality had everywhere taken the upper hand. It was in consequence of this unchristian attitude of the Church that anticlericalism, together with the Humanist reaction of the Renaissance to these abuses, gained popularity.
This was the atmosphere in which Cardinal Carafa, in July 1542, secured from Pope Paul III the bull Licet ab initio, creating a: totally reformed Inquisition for Italy. In this position he had to fight against all kinds of Protestant heresies. Books had to be severely censored, as printing helped the spread of such ideas. But it was only in 1559, the year he was elected Pope as Paul IV, that the Index Librorum Prohibitorum was published. The effect of the Index was soon to become apparent as it enabled the Church to conduct a policing action over all published literature. In Malta the Inquisition enabled the Church to exercise strict control over books and other publications reaching the island, inhibiting their circulation for almost three centuries.
In Sicily the first mention of the Lutheran heresy is dated 1529 at the time of Fra Eremio de Tripedibus, an Augustinian monk of Maratea in the kingdom of Naples, who was also master of Theology, In the opinion of C.A. Garufi, this date is doubtful as Lutheran ideas had, by then, just seeped through the Venetian Republic, then considered the most liberal of Italian States.
Unlike Malta in the times of the Order of St John's rule, the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily had steadfastly resisted the establishment of the Roman Inquisition. Liberatore mentions the fact that when Charles V tried to introduce it in 1544, the nobility raised considerable objections. They feared that the Viceroy would exploit it to his own advantage, thereby gaining a stronger position. At times, however, heretics, especially in Naples, were sent to Rome to be tried there. The two Kingdoms, like the rest of the Spanish Empire, including tiny Malta, were greatly influenced by prohibited literature coming mainly through France. Indeed, the presence of this kind of literature in Malta raised fears that Lutheranism would become established in Malta. This prompted the response of the inquisitor who persecuted any Lutheran sympathisers.peer-reviewe
Temporary work in Tuscany: A multinominal nested logit analysis
In this paper, distinguishing between the choice of the worker and the choice of the firm, we provide a probabilistic evaluation of the transition from temporary to permanent employment in a regional context. Estimating a Multinomial Nested Logit Model, we found that the transition to a permanent job is far from certain, especially for women and older workers
