Line transect abundance estimation with uncertain detection on the trackline
Bibliography: leaves 225-233.After critically reviewing developments in line transect estimation theory to date, general likelihood functions are derived for the case in which detection probabilities are modelled as functions of any number of explanatory variables and detection of animals on the trackline (i.e. directly in the observer's path) is not certain. Existing models are shown to correspond to special cases of the general models. Maximum likelihood estimators are derived for some special cases of the general model and some existing line transect estimators are shown to correspond to maximum likelihood estimators for other special cases. The likelihoods are shown to be extensions of existing mark-recapture likelihoods as well as being generalizations of existing line transect likelihoods. Two new abundance estimators are developed. The first is a Horvitz-Thompson-like estimator which utilizes the fact that for point estimation of abundance the density of perpendicular distances in the population can be treated as known in appropriately designed line transect surveys. The second is based on modelling the probability density function of detection probabilities in the population. Existing line transect estimators are shown to correspond to special cases of the new Horvitz-Thompson-like estimator, so that this estimator, together with the general likelihoods, provides a unifying framework for estimating abundance from line transect surveys
Nanoscale magnetic structure of ferromagnet/antiferromagnet manganite multilayers
Polarized Neutron Reflectometry and magnetometry measurements have been used
to obtain a comprehensive picture of the magnetic structure of a series of
La{2/3}Sr{1/3}MnO{3}/Pr{2/3}Ca{1/3}MnO{3} (LSMO/PCMO) superlattices, with
varying thickness of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) PCMO layers (0<=t_A<=7.6 nm).
While LSMO presents a few magnetically frustrated monolayers at the interfaces
with PCMO, in the latter a magnetic contribution due to FM inclusions within
the AFM matrix was found to be maximized at t_A~3 nm. This enhancement of the
FM moment occurs at the matching between layer thickness and cluster size,
where the FM clusters would find the optimal strain conditions to be
accommodated within the "non-FM" material. These results have important
implications for tuning phase separation via the explicit control of strain.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to PR
Trace-contrast models for capture-recapture without capture histories

Ben Stevenson was supported by EPSRC/NERC Grant EP/1000917/1.Capture-recapture studies increasingly rely upon natural tags that allow animals to be identified by features such as coat markings, DNA profiles, acoustic profiles, or spatial locations. These innovations greatly increase the number of capture samples achievable and enable capture-recapture estimation for many inaccessible and elusive species. However, natural features are invariably imperfect as indicators of identity. Drawing on the recently developed Palm likelihood approach to parameter estimation in clustered point processes, we propose a new estimation framework based on comparing pairs of detections, which we term the trace-contrast framework. Importantly, no reconstruction of capture histories is needed. We show that we can achieve accurate, precise, and computationally fast inference. We illustrate the methods with a camera-trap study of a partially marked population of ship rats (Rattus rattus) in New Zealand.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Abundance and distribution of narwhals (Monodon monoceros) on the summering grounds in Greenland between 2007-2019
Narwhal abundance in West Greenland (WG) and East Greenland (EG) was estimated from aerial surveys conducted between 2007 and 2019 at their summer grounds. Analyses were completed using Mark Recapture Distance Sampling and Hidden Markov Line Transect Models taking account of the stochastic availability of diving whales. No statistically significant difference in abundance of narwhals could be detected for the two summer grounds (Melville Bay and Inglefield Bredning) in WG between 2007 and 2019. The distribution of narwhals in Inglefield Bredning was similar between years but in Melville Bay, area usage has decreased >80% since the first survey in 2007. Few detections of narwhals were obtained during the surveys in EG and a common detection function was fitted from combining sightings from seven surveys. Narwhals were found in small aggregations distributed between Nordostrundingen and south to and including Tasiilaq. Abundance of narwhals was estimated for the first time in the relatively unexplored Northeast Greenland (Dove Bay and a restricted coastal area of the Greenland Sea). The abundance in these two areas was 2908 narwhals (CV=0.30; 95% CI:1639-5168) estimated in 2017 for the Greenland Sea and 2297 (0.38; 1123-4745) and 1395 (0.33; 744-2641) narwhals were estimated for Dove Bay in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Both abundance and distribution range of narwhals in Southeast Greenland, where narwhals are subject to subsistence harvest, has decreased significantly between 2008-2017 and narwhals have even disappeared at the southernmost area since the first surveys in 2008.Peer reviewe
Pattern languages in HCI: A critical review
This article presents a critical review of patterns and pattern languages in human-computer interaction (HCI). In recent years, patterns and pattern languages have received considerable attention in HCI for their potential as a means for developing and communicating information and knowledge to support good design. This review examines the background to patterns and pattern languages in HCI, and seeks to locate pattern languages in relation to other approaches to interaction design. The review explores four key issues: What is a pattern? What is a pattern language? How are patterns and pattern languages used? and How are values reflected in the pattern-based approach to design? Following on from the review, a future research agenda is proposed for patterns and pattern languages in HCI
Wildlife population assessment : changing priorities driven by technological advances

N3943019C2176), and he also thanks partial support by CEAUL (funded by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, through the project UIDB/00006/2020).Advances in technology are having a large effect on the priorities for innovation in statistical ecology. Collaborations between statisticians and ecologists have always been important in driving methodological development, but increasingly, expertise from computer scientists and engineers is also needed. We discuss changes that are occurring and that may occur in the future in surveys for estimating animal abundance. As technology advances, we expect classical distance sampling and capture-recapture to decrease in importance, as camera (still and video) survey, acoustic survey, spatial capture-recapture and genetic methods continue to develop and find new applications. Exact Solution Methods for the -item Quadratic Knapsack Problem
The purpose of this paper is to solve the 0-1 -item quadratic knapsack
problem , a problem of maximizing a quadratic function subject to two
linear constraints. We propose an exact method based on semidefinite
optimization. The semidefinite relaxation used in our approach includes simple
rank one constraints, which can be handled efficiently by interior point
methods. Furthermore, we strengthen the relaxation by polyhedral constraints
and obtain approximate solutions to this semidefinite problem by applying a
bundle method. We review other exact solution methods and compare all these
approaches by experimenting with instances of various sizes and densities.Comment: 12 page
Modular Structure and Duality in Conformal Quantum Field Theory
Making use of a recent result of Borchers, an algebraic version of the
Bisognano-Wichmann theorem is given for conformal quantum field theories, i.e.
the Tomita-Takesaki modular group associated with the von Neumann algebra of a
wedge region and the vacuum vector concides with the evolution given by the
rescaled pure Lorentz transformations preserving the wedge. A similar geometric
description is valid for the algebras associated with double cones. Moreover
essential duality holds on the Minkowski space , and Haag duality for double
cones holds provided the net of local algebras is extended to a pre-cosheaf on
the superworld , i.e. the universal covering of the Dirac-Weyl
compactification of . As a consequence a PCT symmetry exists for any
algebraic conformal field theory in even space-time dimension. Analogous
results hold for a Poincar\'e covariant theory provided the modular groups
corresponding to wedge algebras have the expected geometrical meaning and the
split property is satisfied. In particular the Poincar\'e representation is

An Algebraic Spin and Statistics Theorem
A spin-statistics theorem and a PCT theorem are obtained in the context of
the superselection sectors in Quantum Field Theory on a 4-dimensional
space-time. Our main assumption is the requirement that the modular groups of
the von Neumann algebras of local observables associated with wedge regions act
geometrically as pure Lorentz transformations. Such a property, satisfied by
the local algebras generated by Wightman fields because of the

Plastic stress and acoustic emission as predictors of fatigue life
The high rate of acoustic emission from AISI E4340 annealed steel when it is stressed can be used to accurately indicate the yield stress. Predictive equations for the fatigue life of AISI E4340 annealed steel have been developed by the use of “Multiple Classification Analysis” and “Stepwise Regression” computer programs based on an experimental study of 175 specimens. The acoustic emission from the fatigue specimens was investigated prior to fatiguing, but no parameter of the emission was found to correlate significantly with fatigue life. The high-rate emission which occurs at yield is found to be useful in determining the value of the yield stress. The value of the stress into the plastic range determined in this manner was defined by both statistical approaches as the best predictor of fatigue life. The fatigue stress level was rejected as a lesser predictor.
