Re-visioning Chandigarh: Densification and Re-development of the City Centre (Sector 17)

    Get PDF
Chandigarh was one of the few opportunities for Le Corbusier to express his design principles at a large scale. Created in the 1950s, Chandigarh today is thriving and growing fast, albeit without order. Hence, there is a need to re-think the original design strategies in order to incorporate new housing, additional commercial, institutional and other uses to fulfill the demand of the growing population. This study presents a visionary proposal for the re-development of Sector 17, the City Centre of Chandigarh, into a Mixed Use “Sustainable” Urban Centre. The existing Sector 17 is predominantly occupied by commercial, institutional and office uses and comprises large “super blocks” with parking surrounding the buildings. There are no through physical and visual connections to the adjoining sectors. Most buildings are in a good condition but are visually unattractive. Through infill and reinterpretation of Le Corbusier’s design principles, proposing high quality architecture while preserving some of the existin structures the study explores the opportunity to create an improved public realm comprising a multitude of land uses, making the City Centre more vibrant, safe and a “24-7” liveable place

Framework for Clinical and Non-Clinical Best Practices for Care for Transgender Individuals

    Get PDF
This framework studies the gap in healthcare transgender individuals experience and aims to provide competent clinical and non-clinical best practices for care within a clinical setting. The literature indicates the challenges transgender individuals face when accessing appropriate care. Amid the current political climate and rise of anti-transgender healthcare bills, clinical settings need to be inclusive of gender diverse communication and language to ensure equitable care. Therefore, this framework addresses the clinical and administrative gaps that exist through the development of two case scenarios. Furthermore, the case scenarios indicate the need for core competencies within a clinical setting. The framework recommends core competencies and provides a clinical discussion design to establish an appropriate and equitable medical visit. Nonetheless, this framework can serve as a reference that can be used for all vulnerable populations to address their specific healthcare needs

Measurement of dynamic characteristics of five stage proportional fluidic amplifier

    Get PDF
Experimentally determined frequency characteristics of a five stage proportional fluid amplifier are presented as a preliminary step to the design of a fluidic operational amplifier. Steady state and dynamic impedences at the input and the output are included as well as the gorward gain, over the range of zero to 1000 Hz. Phase as well as magnitude is presented

    Ophthalmic Problems at High Altitude

    Get PDF
Cardio-pulmonary and physical endurance aspects of high altitude problems have been studied well but not much attention has been paid to the ocular aspects of the problems. 250 cases inducted to a high altitude area in the northern region were examined for ocular parameters within a week of induction and at varying intervals thereafter. Blurred vision was complained of by a number of cases who also suffered from other symptoms of transient mountain sickness. A group of cases who developed acute pulmonary oedema showed fundus changes by way of venous engorgement, papilloedema and superficial retinal haemorrhages. These changes reversed over a period of time as the acute condition subsided. Another group remained asymptomatic but their fundii showed neovascularisation and exudation in addition to retinal haemorrhages. The aetiopathogenesis of these two kinds of changes and other changes is discussed

Integration of operation allocation and material handling in the design of flexible manufacturing systems.

Operation Allocation and Material Handling Systems Selection are important functions of a manufacturing system and as such must be considered within an integrated approach to manufacturing systems design. This work, an extension to the work done by Paulo (1999) proposes to integrate two important functions of manufacturing, i.e. operation allocation and material handling systems selection, and solve them iteratively. The objective of the operation allocation model is to select a group of machines where the operations of the part types will be performed and then to assign those operations to the selected machines. The material handling equipment is allocated by the material handling system selection model to transport a part type from one machine to the other for the next operation. The operation allocation model obtains one of its inputs from the material handling system selection model in the form of material handling equipment to be used for transporting a part type from one machine to another machine. The operation allocation model interfaces with the material handling system selection model by providing input data in the form of the manufacturing operations to be performed at each machining center. The material handling system is selected on the basis of the parts visiting a machining center to perform a manufacturing operation and the abilities of the handling devices to perform the required material handling functions of those part types. The material handling system selection model provides the feedback to the first model to complete the iteration. A program was developed to solve the two models iteratively so as to obtain an optimal solution.Dept. of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.
