    Revealing the Multiscale Nature of Turbulence in Space Plasmas with an Innovative Swarm of Spacecraft

    Abstract: Turbulence is fundamentally a multiscale phenomena, with energy, mass, and momentum being transported across both spatial and temporal scales. In a magnetized collisionless plasma, there are unresolved questions about the structure of the turbulent transfer of energy, as well as how the energy is extracted from the cascade and dissipated as heat in the constituent charged particles. The plasma in the solar wind acts as an accessible natural laboratory to study these processes, and much progress has indeed been made since the dawn of the space age in understanding turbulence via in situ observations of turbulent plasmas near Earth. However, to date, these observations have been limited to a single, or at best, a tight cluster of points, leading to ambiguities in at what scales energy is contained, how it is transported, and by what mechanism it is dissipated. In this presentation, we describe a heliophysics mission concept aimed at understanding turbulence that is enabled by a swarm of small satellites. The proposed "HelioSwarm" mission will measure turbulent fields and flows and charged particles simultaneously at many points spanning size and time scales from the fluid to sub-ion regime. In doing so, we will be able to disentangle how the turbulence depends on time and space, directly observe the change in internal energy in the plasma, and definitively capture the dynamic relation between turbulence and structures. While the processes under examination are universal, arising throughout our solar system and universe, they are difficult to reproduce in either terrestrial laboratories or numerical simulations, meaning that the only a multipoint observatory in the near-Earth heliosphere will be able to study them in sufficient detail to discern the underlying physics.     Temperature and Emission-Measure Profiles Along Long-Lived Solar Coronal Loops Observed with TRACE

    We report an initial study of temperature and emission measure distributions along four steady loops observed with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) at the limb of the Sun. The temperature diagnostic is the filter ratio of the extreme-ultraviolet 171-angstrom and 195-angstrom passbands. The emission measure diagnostic is the count rate in the 171-angstrom passband. We find essentially no temperature variation along the loops. We compare the observed loop structure with theoretical isothermal and nonisothermal static loop structure.Comment: 10 pages, 3 postscript figures (LaTeX, uses aaspp4.sty). Accepted by ApJ Letter

    Distribution planning with random demand and recourse in a transshipment network

    In this paper we consider a distribution planning problem in a transshipment network under stochastic customer demand, to account for uncertainty faced in real-life applications when planning distribution activities. To date, considerations of randomness in distribution planning networks with intermediate facilities have received very little attention in the literature. We address this gap by modeling uncertainty in a distribution network with an intermediate facility, and providing insight on the benefit of accounting for randomness at the distribution planning phase. The problem is studied from the perspective of a third-party logistics provider (3PL) that is outsourced to handle the logistics needs of its customers; the 3PL uses a consolidation center to achieve transportation cost savings. We formulate a two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse that aims to minimize the sum of transportation cost, expected inventory holding cost and expected outsourcing cost. The recourse variables ensure that the problem is feasible regardless of the realization of demand, by allowing the option of using a spot market carrier if demand exceeds capacity. We propose a flow-based formulation with a nonlinear holding cost component in the objective function. We then develop an alternative linear path-based formulation that models the movement of freight in the network as path variables. We apply Sample Average Approximation (SAA) to solve the problem, and show that it results in reasonable optimality gaps for problem instances of different sizes. We conduct extensive testing to evaluate the benefits of our proposed stochastic model compared to its deterministic counterpart. Our computational experiments provide managerial insight into the robustness and cost-efficiency of the distribution plans of our proposed stochastic model, and the conditions under which our model achieves significant distribution cost savings.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canad

    Shipment consolidation with two demand classes: Rationing the dispatch capacity

Shipment orders arrive according to a compound Poisson process for each class. Upon an arrival, the logistics provider may continue consolidating arriving orders by paying a holding cost. Alternatively, the provider may dispatch, at a fixed cost, a vehicle containing (a portion of) the load consolidated so far. In addition, the provider must specify the composition of each dispatch by allocating (rationing) the volume of the vehicle between expedited and regular shipment orders. We model this problem as a continuous-time Markov Decision Process and minimize the expected discounted total cost. We prove the existence of quantity-based optimal threshold policies under particular conditions. We also structurally analyze the thresholds of these optimal policies. Based on these structural properties, we develop an efficient solution approach for large problem instances which are difficult to solve using the conventional policy-iteration method.     An Approximate Dynamic Programming Approach to Urban Freight Distribution with Batch Arrivals

    We study an extension of the delivery dispatching problem (DDP) with time windows, applied on LTL orders arriving at an urban consolidation center. Order properties (e.g., destination, size, dispatch window) may be highly varying, and directly distributing an incoming order batch may yield high costs. Instead, the hub operator may wait to consolidate with future arrivals. A consolidation policy is required to decide which orders to ship and which orders to hold. We model the dispatching problem as a Markov decision problem. Dynamic Programming (DP) is applied to solve toy-sized instances to optimality. For larger instances, we propose an Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) approach. Through numerical experiments, we show that ADP closely approximates the optimal values for small instances, and outperforms two myopic benchmark policies for larger instances. We contribute to literature by (i) formulating a DDP with dispatch windows and (ii) proposing an approach to solve this DDP

    Testing the Solar Probe Cup, an Instrument Designed to Touch the Sun

    Solar Probe Plus will be the first, fastest, and closest mission to the sun, providing the first direct sampling of the sub-Alfvenic corona. The Solar Probe Cup (SPC) is a unique re-imagining of the traditional Faraday Cup design and materials for immersion in this high temperature environment. Sending an instrument of this type into a never-seen particle environment requires extensive characterization prior to launch to establish sufficient measurement accuracy and instrument response. To reach this end, a slew of tests for allowing SPC to see ranges of appropriate ions and electrons, as well as a facility that reproduces solar photon spectra and fluxes for this mission. Having already tested the SPC at flight like temperatures with no significant modification of the noise floor, we recently completed a round of particle testing to see if the deviations in Faraday Cup design fundamentally change the operation of the instrument. Results and implications from these tests will be presented, as well as performance comparisons to cousin instruments such as those on the WIND spacecraft

    A psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioners: Development and evaluation

    Research question: This paper is an integration of three studies. Study 1 investigates sport career transition organisational intervention programmes for high performance athletes and training and development programmes for sport career transition practitioners in order to find a research gap with regard to sport career transition supporting services. A psycho-educational curriculum was developed for sport career transition practitioner in Study 2 to fill the research gap. In Study 3, the curriculum was examined to see if the curriculum contributed to enhancing practitioners’ confidence in key competences.  Research methods: A range of methods were applied to the studies including One Group Pre- and Post-test design, Case Study, Focus Group, Semi-Structured Interview, two-round Delphi-Method and Questionnaires. The data for Study 1 collected from 19 countries worldwide and total 16 participants based in seven different countries were invited to development and evaluation of the curriculum.  Results and Findings: A novel psycho-educational curriculum for sport career transition practitioner was developed and evaluated concerning four competences as a form of curriculum package. The findings revealed that the curriculum package increased the participants’ confidence in key competences concerning sport career transition.  Implications: The findings deepen the knowledge of sport career transition in the areas of organisational intervention programmes focusing on high performance athletes and sport career transition practitioners. These findings contribute to modifying the Conceptual Model of Adaptation to Career Transition (Lavallee, Park, & Taylor, 2014) by strengthening the organisational intervention perspective and applied work in respect of sporting organisation management strategie
