Towards a Critical Sociology of Dominant Ideologies: An Unexpected Reunion between Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanski
This article aims to demonstrate the enduring relevance of Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanskiâs âLa production de lâidĂ©ologie dominanteâ [âThe production of the dominant ideologyâ], which was originally published in Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales in 1976. More than three decades later, in 2008, a re-edited version of this study was printed in book format as La production de lâidĂ©ologie dominante, which was accompanied by a detailed commentary, written by Luc Boltanski and entitled Rendre la rĂ©alitĂ© inacceptable. Ă propos de « La production de lâidĂ©ologie dominante » [Making Reality Unacceptable. Comments on âThe production of the dominant ideologyâ]. In addition to containing revealing personal anecdotes and providing important sociological insights, this commentary offers an insider account of the genesis of one of the most seminal pieces Boltanski co-wrote with his intellectual father, Bourdieu. In the Anglophone literature on contemporary French sociology, however, the theoretical contributions made both in the original study and in Boltanskiâs commentary have received little â if any â serious attention. This article aims to fill this gap in the literature, arguing that these two texts can be regarded not only as forceful reminders of the fact that the âdominant ideology thesisâ is far from obsolete but also as essential for understanding both the personal and the intellectual underpinnings of the tension-laden relationship between Bourdieu and Boltanski. Furthermore, this article offers a critical overview of the extent to which the unexpected, and partly posthumous, reunion between âthe masterâ (Bourdieu) and his âdissident discipleâ (Boltanski) equips us with powerful conceptual tools, which, whilst illustrating the continuing centrality of âideology critiqueâ, permit us to shed new light on key concerns in contemporary sociology and social theory. Finally, the article seeks to push the debate forward by reflecting upon several issues that are not given sufficient attention by Bourdieu and Boltanski in their otherwise original and insightful enquiry into the complexities characterizing the daily production of ideology
Politizando o conceito de redes organizacionais: uma reflexão teórica da governança como jogo de poder
Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma reflexĂŁo teĂłrica sobre a dimensĂŁo polĂtica das redes organizacionais. Para tanto, procurou fazer uma anĂĄlise desse formato organizacional, privilegiando a dimensĂŁo polĂtica das relaçÔes interorganizacionais a partir de alguns conceitos formulados pelo sociĂłlogo Pierre Bourdieu. As evidĂȘncias teĂłricas revelaram que esse recorte analĂtico poderĂĄ oferecer leituras alternativas Ă s reflexĂ”es que despolitizam o conceito de redes organizacionais, colocando no epicentro das argumentaçÔes a lĂłgica da cooperação e da confiança como forças motrizes e suficientes para explicar o funcionamento das relaçÔes entre as organizaçÔes. The hysteresis effect as creative adaptation of the habitus: Dissent and transition to the âcorporateâ in post-Soviet Ukraine
How might Bourdieuâs concept of the hysteresis effect be operationalized in order to understand dissent from, and compliance with, domination in a specific period of social and organizational transition? We employ the Bourdieusian concepts, in particular âforms of capitalâ, âhysteresis effectâ and âhabitusâ to examine the production and reproduction of domination within a British international organization (the âCorporationâ) operating in transitional post-Soviet Ukraine. Our argument is that the communist-era dissident habitus was better adapted to the changed socio-economic circumstances of postcommunism and was able to creatively adapt to the Corporation through identifying homological processes of domination and adopting homological dissident strategies. The hysteresis effect might therefore provide an explanation of how workers make sense of their new environment based on their habitus, on their capacity to decipher homologies between the previous context and the new one, and on how the dominated that dissent reuse or adapt their strategies in and to this new context. This article makes contributions to the study of domination in organizational contexts at three levels. At the theoretical level, through organizational-based empirical work we build on and develop Bourdieuâs concept of the hysteresis effect by demonstrating the role of the hysteresis effect in the creative reproduction of dissent as a habitus. Our substantive contribution adds a new perspective to the literature on âtransitionâ, providing a fine-grained study of how domination was produced within the Western organization in post-Soviet Ukraine
Esporte moderno e mediação pedagĂłgica nas aulas de educação fĂsica Sports and pedagogic mediation
O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar, mediar e problematizar os conceitos de esporte formados pelos alunos. A perspectiva da mediação pedagĂłgica, em especial as contribuiçÔes de FONTANA (2000) e leitura sociolĂłgica de BOURDIEU (1983), foram fundamentos teĂłricos para pensarmos os conceitos de esporte produzidos em aula. A pesquisa, caracterizada como participante, foi realizada com alunos de sextas e sĂ©timas sĂ©ries de uma Escola Estadual localizada na cidade de SĂŁo Paulo. Os dados foram sistematizados em relatĂłrios referentes Ă s aulas mediadas pelo professor/pesquisador. A partir da mediação pedagĂłgica e da anĂĄlise dos relatĂłrios Ă© possĂvel considerar que houve mudança de pensamento dos estudantes em relação ao fenĂŽmeno esportivo na direção da natureza sociocultural.<br>This study analyzed the students' knowledge about the phenomenon "modern sport". The objective was to identify, mediate and problemize the concept of sport formed by students. The prospect of mediation teaching, in particular the contributions of FONTANA (2000), and reading sociology of BOURDIEU (1983) were theoretical grounds for thinking the concepts of sport produced in class. The research, characterized as participant, was performed with students of sixth and seventh grades at a state school in the city of Sao Paulo. Data were classified in reports on lessons mediated by the teacher/researcher. From the pedagogical mediation and analysis of reports can be considered how have changed the thinking of students regarding to the phenomenon of sports in the direction of the sociocultural nature
As "confrarias" como um fenĂŽmeno organizacional brasileiro: uma reflexĂŁo sobre significados
Apesar da grande quantidade de artigos acadĂȘmicos sobre a importĂąncia dos grupos informais, produzidos nas Ășltimas duas dĂ©cadas, a maior parte dos estudos limitou-se Ă anĂĄlise da influĂȘncia das redes interorganizacionais na competitividade e na capacidade de mudança das empresas. Neste artigo, argumenta-se que os grupos informais sĂŁo reproduçÔes sociais do contexto onde estĂŁo inseridos, e que seu poder de influĂȘncia precisa ser investigado numa perspectiva ampliada, interdisciplinar, onde o objeto possa ser analisado, simultaneamente, dos pontos de vista inter e intra-organizacional. Para isso, pretende-se realizar uma reflexĂŁo crĂtica sobre o fenĂŽmeno das "confrarias", as quais sĂŁo vistas como grupos informais que emergem nas organizaçÔes a partir de valores socialmente construĂdos e compartilhados. O principal questionamento teĂłrico Ă© quanto Ă natureza dos valores e lĂłgicas de ação compartilhados pelos seus participantes, dos recursos de poder de que dispĂ”em e de como esses participantes utilizam tais recursos para atingir seus objetivos.
