CULTURAL COMPETENCE INTEGRATION IN THE NURSING CURRICULUM

    Get PDF
With an increasingly diverse population, it is important to ensure that graduates of nursing programs are able to deliver culturally competent care (Krainovich-Miller et al., 2008; Allen, 2010). This study was undertaken to address this call to include cultural competence integration into nursing curriculum. The purpose of this study was to discover evidence of cultural competence integration in the nursing curriculum as perceived by faculty and students in a baccalaureate nursing program. This study addressed the following research questions: a) Does the undergraduate nursing curriculum integrate cultural competence?, b) Do the undergraduate nursing faculty perceive cultural competence content in the nursing courses?, and c) Do the undergraduate nursing students perceive cultural competence content in the nursing courses? The design for this research was a non-experiment post-test only study using descriptive and correlation methods. The instrument used was the Blueprint for Integration of Cultural Competence in the Curriculum Questionnaire (BICCCQ), a 31- item questionnaire involving five factors (α= .96). Analysis of means and standard deviations of the nursing faculty and students responses on the BICCCQ revealed that there is a perception of cultural competency content in the nursing curriculum and courses. Almost 84% of the questions had a mean score of over 1 which would indicate medium or high level of inclusion in the curriculum while only 16% mean scored less than one which would indicate a low level of inclusion in the curriculum. The results of the study suggest that there is an integration of cultural competence in the nursing curriculum in the baccalaureate nursing program

Design topology of a remote-controlled bi-directional rotation of an A.C. fan with speed control

The use of remote control for alternating current fans in homes/offices is one of the applications of electronics that enhances human comfort. It should therefore not be seen as luxury, rather, it should be taken as a basic requirement of life. In this study, the bi-directional rotation and speed control of ac fan were achieved using ardiuno microcontroller and tuned capacitors circuit. The use of the new state-of- the art technique in this work is significant because it helped in over-coming the drawbacks associated with the use of inductive, resistive and phase angle controlled regulators. The significance of this study will be of great benefit to physically challenged and aged persons who need to have their comforts in their various places of sitting. The designed topology of the work was executed and achieved. Reliability test carried out on the finished work showed better efficiency

Yoga in school-aged children: Impact on children's mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic – A protocol

The rapid spread of COVID-19 and the increasing burden on mental health and well- being require new ways of supporting families that have to maintain the new norms of social distancing. Many families may be under enormous amounts of stress and anxiety caused by losing their loved ones. Therefore, there is a great need to search for ways to minimize the effects of COVID-19 on mental health and well-being. The purpose of the research is to evaluate a yoga intervention offered online to school-aged children in the U.K. by Patanjali Yog Peeth Trust U.K. (PYPT) and evaluate its effectiveness by interviewing the parents of participating children. The project will seek to promote an additional tool in managing mental health and well-being in school-aged children. The research will use a mixed-methods approach. Parents will be approached by a PYPT yoga teacher and invited to complete an online survey and quantitative interview. Parents (over 18 years) of school-aged children (5-16 years) who live in the U.K. are eligible to take part. Upon gaining consent, participates will be asked to complete a parent and child characteristic questionnaire. An SDQ survey for parents via online Opinio and a subsample will be interviewed using a structured interview schedule. All analyses will be carried out in SPSS. It is intended that the research will provide an evidence base that will aid future studies and inform in developing yoga interventions that may aid in promoting child mental health and well-being. The study results will be published in peer-reviewed international journals; the researchers will also present the results at governmental conferences
