De Plana Musica and Introductio Musice: A Critical Edition and Translation, With Commentary, of Two Treatises Attributed to Johannes De Garlanda.

Johannes de Garlandia (fl. 1250, Paris), author of the seminal De mensurabili musica, has been linked to two plainchant treatises, De plana musica and Introductio musice. This dissertation presents the first critical edition and translation, with commentary, of these two treatises. It includes an introduction, Latin texts of the two treatises with English translations in parallel columns, critical apparatus, commentary, and appendices. De plana musica is transmitted in three sources, Introductio musice in four. The text of Introductio musice established here is shorter than that printed by Coussemaker (CS, 1:157-75), who included in the final portion of his text several independent short treatises. Also considered here as separate treatises are five other texts, hitherto described as sources for Introductio musice; one of these is an abridgement of Introductio musice, and the other four are peripheral treatises that share material with it. To the latter group is introduced one more treatise, Florence, Conventi Soppressi 388, fols. 56r-60v, described and presented here for the first time. All these texts are included in appendices; another appendix provides a critical edition of the Ars contrapunctus secundum Philippum de vitriaco, a treatise that parallels portions of Introductio musice. Paleographical evidence is used to date and determine the provenance of the pertinent manuscripts, one of which, Rio de Janeiro, Cofre 50.18, is described in detail here for the first time. The dissertation also addresses issues of authorship and dating of De plana musica and Introductio musice, their content, and their relationship with each other and with other medieval treatises. It concludes that although De plana musica may well have been written by the author of De mensurabili musica, the same author could not have written Introductio musice

On some ancient and medieval roots of George Berkeley’s thought

This thesis proposes a consideration of Berkeley's thought from the standpoint of its roots, rather than (which is the prevalent perspective in today's Berkeley scholarship) from the point of view of the developments that this thought has brought about in modern philosophy. Chapter One deals with a number of specific introductory issues, and then delineates a theoretical context within which my own approach will reveal its scholarly significance. In Chapter Two I advance the idea that there is in Berkeley's early writings an entire network of Platonic features, attitudes, and mind sets, prefiguring his speculative and openly Platonic writing Siris. Chapter Three is a systematic attempt at considering Berkeley's immaterialist philosophy in close connection to the topic of liber mundi, with the twofold objective of pointing out those of the medieval implications of the topic that Berkeley preserved, and the "novelties" he brought forth in his use of the topic. The central idea around which Chapter Four is clustered is that, in Siris, Berkeley comes to make use of one of the most ancient "spiritual techniques": alchemy. Berkeley’s arguments and notions in Siris will be discussed by constant reference to alchemic notions, writings and authors. Chapter Five is an attempt at considering Berkeley’s thought from the standpoint of the Christian apologetic tradition, and its objective is to show that one of the roots of Berkeley's thought could be found precisely in this tradition. In Chapter Six I will show that even when designing such a practical project as the "Bermuda scheme" Berkeley was under the modeling influence of the past. More precisely, the chapter purports to offer a discussion of Berkeley's "Bermuda scheme" in light of the Western representations of the "happy islands", "earthly paradise", ''eschaton". The last chapter (Chapter Seven) purports to undertake a comparative analysis of some of the ideas professed by medieval Catharism, and George Berkeley’s denial of the existence of matter. The central notion around which my comparative approach is articulated is the idea that, in both cases, matter is regarded as the source of evil. What I will try to show is that Berkeley's attitudes to the material world echoed certain Cathar theological anxieties and patterns of thought

John Milton: The Self and the World

    Get PDF
The facts of John Milton\u27s life are well documented, but what of the person Milton—the man whose poetic and prose works have been deeply influential and are still the subject of opposing readings? John Shawcross\u27s different biography depicts the man against a psychological backdrop that brings into relief who he was—in his works and from his works. While the theories of Freud, Lacan, Kohut, and others underlie this pursuit of Milton\u27s self, Jung and some of his followers provide the basic understanding by which Shawcross places Milton in the panorama of history. His explorations of the psychological underpinnings of Milton\u27s decision to become a poet, of the homoerotic dimensions of his personality, and of his relationships with father and mother demonstrate the extent to which psychobiography proves itself invaluable as a means to appreciate this complex writer and his complex writings. This biography combines the traditional chronological narrative with a technique akin to that of fiction, a mixture of times and a triggering of remembrances from various time frames without time differentiations. Such an approach offers a view of Milton not only in being but in process of being. Shawcross\u27s examination of two current concerns, gender attitudes and political ideologies, ranges Milton\u27s work against the self he exhibits. Specialists and nonspecialists alike will find in this magisterial biography a wealth of new insight into one of the greatest of English poets. Winner of the James Holly Hanford Prize given by the Milton Society of America John T. Shawcross is professor emeritus of English at the University of Kentucky and the author and editor of many books. Reveals much about its subject, especially as a young man. —Albion The careful readings, the precise chronologies, and the learned attention to symbol from etymology to archetype make this biographical account of Milton one that scholars will have to both wrestle with and, for the most part, accede to, however reluctantly, for a long time to come. —Book Review Corner An engaging and necessary read for anyone interested in Milton\u27s great poems. —Kritikon Litterarumhttps://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_english_language_and_literature_british_isles/1071/thumbnail.jp

Arhitektonski objekat kao jedinstvena celina forme, funkcije, konstrukcije i instalacija u današnje vreme podrazumeva primenu savremenih, složenih instalacionih sistema, a s tim u vezi i uključivanje šireg kruga stručnjaka u svim fazama životnog veka jedne zgrade. Prvenstveni cilj skupa je prezentacija savremenih naučnih i stručnih dostignuća u oblasti instalacionih sistema, mreža i postrojenja u svim fazama izgradnje objekata (projektovanje, izvođenje radova i eksploatacije instalacija).
