    Online interpersonal relationship strategies between same gender among Malaysian chatters

    Strategies utilised by users of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) will determine the level of their interpersonal relationship in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). However, strategies for establishing relationships between the same gender differ from one another. Therefore, this study intends to answer the question of whether or not differences exist in the utilisation of strategies in the form of online interpersonal relationships for chat partners of the same gender. This study undertakes a quantitative approach. However, in-depth interviews are used to obtain the strategies that are used to build interpersonal relations through CMC by IRC users. All the strategies are modified to create questions in the research instrument in order to conduct a study through a survey method. A multi-regression analysis was conducted to analyse the data. The results show that male IRC users interact with one another by using only one strategy, which is the strategy to create similar values/ understanding of the meaning of emoticons. When female IRC users interact with one another, they use three main strategies; strategy of relationship continuity through e-mail, strategy to create similar values/ understanding of the meaning of emoticons, and strategy of satisfaction fulfilment of the chat buddy. The results of this study provide implications toward face-to-face interpersonal communication-related theories and their applications in the context of CMC

    Perubahan Kognitif dan Tingkat Interaksi Penonton dengan Drama Melayu di Televisyen: Analisis Drama 'Jutawan Segera'

    Kebanyakan drama Melayu kini semakin mengabaikan imej orang Melayu dalam pembentukan identiti bangsa. Ketidaktepatan imej yang dipancarkan melalui drama Melayu merupakan masalah yang perlu dikenalpasti. Persoalannya, adakah imej yang dipaparkan melalui drama Melayu dapat menggugat perubahan kognitif dan apakah hubungannya dengan tingkat interaksi penonton? Objektif kajian eksperimen ini adalah 1) untuk mengenalpasti tingkat interaksi penonton dengan drama Melayu di televisyen; 2) untuk mengenalpasti perubahan kognitif penonton drama Melayu di televisyen dan; 3) untuk mengenalpasti hubungan di antara perubahan kognitif dengan tingkat interaksi penonton drama Melayu di televisyen.Kajian ini dijalankan mengikut Rekabentuk Kawalan Prauji dan Postuji. Seramai 40 orang pelajar komunikasi dipilih. Kumpulan rawatan dibahagikan kepada dua, kumpulan kawalan (20 orang) dan kumpulan eksperimen (20 orang). Pembahagian ditentukan secara rawak. Kumpulan eksperimen dipertontonkan dengan Drama Jutawan Segera sebagai rangsangan. Data kajian dikumpulkan menggunakan borang soal selidik prauji dan postuji. Data dianalisis menggunakan Pakej Statistik untuk Sains Sosial (SPSS) bagi mendapatkan maklumat tentang peratusan, purata, sisihan piawai. Ujian Berpasangan Wilcoxon-Signed Rank dan Ujian Korelasi juga digunakan. Hasil kajian ialah 1) tingkat interaksi penonton pada tahap menonton, membacalmenginterpretasi dan mengguna adalah tinggi; 2) tidak terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan perubahan kognitif (perubahan darjah ketepatan imej orang Melayu) sebelum dan selepas menonton Drama Jutawan Segera, dan; 3) tingkat interaksi yang tinggi pada tahap menonton, membaca/menginterpretasi dan mengguna tidak meningkatkan perubahan kognitif keseluruhan. Bagaimanapun, peningkatan tahap membaca/menginterpretasi akan menambahkan darjah ketepatan imej pemikiran berbanding peningkatan tahap mengguna. Pada amnya, dapat dirumuskan bahawa perubahan kognitif (perubahan darjah ketepatan imej orang Melayu berdasarkan Drama Jutawan Segera) tidak bergantung kepada tingkat interaksi penonton

    Pattern of the news media consumption and news discussion among youth : a test of agenda setting theory

    There have been many studies in the media consumption habits among youth. Previous studies reported that youth preferred news on online media compared to other news media. This study tries to explore the pattern of news media consumption and interpersonal news discussions. The specific objectives of the study are (1) to determine the level of perceived news media credibility, (2) to find out the level of news media consumption, (3) to find out the extent of interpersonal news discussions, (4) to analyze the relationship between perceived media credibility and news media consumption with interpersonal news discussions, and (5) to differentiate between selected demographic characteristic with news media consumption and interpersonal news discussions. The study made use of survey research design method. The data were collected using a set ofself-administered questionnaire. A sample of 1363 was randomly selected usingstratified random sample. Malaysian youth aged 15-25 years old were gathered for the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 16.0. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used for the study

    This study hypothesized that gratification mediates relationships between expectations towards social and technology gratification provided by YouTube for movie watching experience; with continuance intention of using YouTube to watch movies. All variables and items were extracted from reviews of literatures and were checked for convergent and discriminant validity using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) under AMOS software was later used. Results of the SEM indicated that the model fits the data. Based on the Three-Variable Non-recursive Causal Model by Baron and Kenny, it was found that gratification acts as a mediator for both expectations, which also led to their continuance intent to watch movies on YouTube

    A survey has been conducted to audit the corporate image of selected GLCs in Malaysia using corporate identity elements, where data were collected from a sample of middle managers.Correlation analysis was used to analyze the data.Results indicated that all studied elements of corporate identity components (corporate behavior, corporate communication, corporate design, corporate culture, corporate strategy, and corporate personality) have significant contribution towards corporate image.Thus, managers have to carefully strategize these elements in their internal branding initiatives to come out with excellent corporate image

    Problems in using the wireless village services in Malaysia: the non-users perspectives

    This study aims to identify problems faced by rural community in Malaysia in using the wireless village services. The study is quantitative in nature and was conducted in four districts in Malaysia, namely Setiawan (Perak), Bahau (Negeri Sembilan), Marang (Terengganu) and Kundasang (Sabah). With a total of 300 respondents the study used a survey method to identify the problems faced by an ICT project called 1Malaysia Wireless Village. Analysis performed has confirmed on four main problems that were possibly affected the progress of rural development and digital equality towards economic development. A number of discussions have been highlighted and it is a hope that it can assist the concern parties in constructing the best ICT usage strategies particularly among the rural community

    Masyarakat antarabangsa daripada negara budaya konteks rendah yang datang ke Malaysia mempunyai gaya komunikasi yang berbeza dengan masyarakat tempatan. Gaya komunikasi budaya konteks rendah mereka boleh kekal atau berubah kepada budaya konteks tinggi semasa berada di Malaysia. Kajian ini bertujuan meneroka perubahan gaya komunikasi individu daripada budaya konteks rendah kepada gaya komunikasi budaya konteks tinggi selepas berada 6 bulan di Malaysia. Kaedah tinjauan telah dijalankan menerusi pengedaran borang soal selidik kepada responden di sekitar Lembah Klang.Sejumlah 122 orang responden telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Pemilihan responden ini menggunakan teknik persampelan bertujuan. Selepas enam bulan berada di Malaysia, didapati gaya komunikasi sesetengah individu daripada negara budaya konteks rendah telah mengalami perubahan kepada gaya komunikasi budaya konteks tinggi. Ujian-T Berpasangan menunjukkan perbezaan yang signifikan dalam perubahan gaya komunikasi individu yang berbudaya konteks rendah. Kajian ini dapat menyumbang pengetahuan baru dari aspek perubahan gaya komunikasi masyarakat luar bila berada di negara ini. Ini memberi implikasi kepada pengetahuan bidang komunikasi antara budaya, dan sebagai panduan amalan dalam kalangan masyarakat luar atau negara ini

    A rapid review of the literature on HIV-related stigmatization and discrimination studies in Malaysia

    This study on HIV-related stigmatisation and discrimination was conducted to summarise key findings and identify existing research gaps in this line of research in Malaysia. A search on available online databases yielded 58 documents, but only 25 were eventually included in the review. Searching process was conducted at the end of 2013 to include all previous relevant studies up to this year but not limited to any specific starting date. Eight journal articles and one research report were empirical studies, and hence were the core documents in the analysis. The studies included were synthesised to identify common shared areas that they investigated and make an updated conclusion about the current state of knowledge on HIV-related stigma in Malaysia. Results revealed that the published works mainly focused on knowledge and attitudes toward HIV. Most studies were descriptive and correlation research. Information about self-stigmatisation is limited, while HIV campaigns in some cases instigate fears that HIV kills. HIV-related stigma still remains pervasive in Malaysia and its literature is very limited and underdeveloped. To gain a better understanding of HIV-related stigma, more theoretically driven studies with rigorous research design and method need to be done

    ASSESSMENT OF PERDA, E-COMMUNITY PROGRAM, PULAU PINANG

    The purpose of this paper is to assess the e-community program launched by Penang Regional Development Authority (PERDA) based on participants. 276 survey forms were distributed randomly throughout four zones Multimedia Training Centers in Penang. Generally, the respondents admitted that PERDA’s e-community program had positive elements towards them. It was found that interpersonal source such as peers, neighbours and family members were main sources to provided information regarding PERDA’s e-community program to the respondents. The results showed that most respondents had positive attitude towards competence, ability to try and complexity of computer and the Internet after going through the program. However, there were respondents which had negative attitudes towards their ability to try using the computer and Internet after involving in this program. The results also found that features in PERDA’s ecommunity program become the core into such involvement. Therefore, efforts are needed now and then in order to enhance the quality of this program thus encouraging more participation in the future

    Facebook usage and its association with psychological well-being among Malaysian adolescents

    Previous studies investigated possible effects of Facebook mostly on hedonic well-being but not focusing on individuals fully function of psychological well-being.This study tries to fill the gap by using Ryffs’ scale of psychological well-being.The respondents of this study were 401 adolescents aged between 13-16 years old, internet user, who lived in Selangor, Malaysia.Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyse the data.The results revealed that connectivity and organizing events on Facebook had a positive association with psychological well-being and information seeking has negative association with psychological well-being. This study offers two determinant factors on Facebook usage that can predict adolescents’ psychological well-being in Malaysian cultural context
