    Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters

    Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) Crews lack an injury surveillance program to collect information on non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. Tactical athletes including: police, military and structural firefighters all have a variety of collection systems in place for injury data collection. The lack of injury data prevents WLFF crews from identifying high-risk environments, implementing injury prevention programs, and improving the overall quality of care on the job. Over the last several decades the recent rise in wildfire occurrences and wildfire suppression costs creates a need for healthy and strong individuals in the field. The cost of firefighter salaries and medical care can be mitigated with the use of an athletic trainer along with better knowledge of on the job injuries. In this project we suggested an effective injury surveillance program document that can be used in data collection out in the field. We also addressed in this project the importance of having an athletic trainer in the field to promote health and safety among wildland firefighters. A review of current practices in injury surveillance was conducted in other tactical professions such as military, structural firefighting and police. Strengths and weaknesses of each injury surveillance system were identified to facilitate development of an injury surveillance program for wildland firefighters

    First global analysis of SEASAT scatterometer winds and potential for meteorological research

    The first global wind fields from SEASAT-A scatterometer (SASS) data were produced. Fifteen days of record are available on tape, with unique wind directions indicated for each observation. The methodology of the production of this data set is described, as well as the testing of its validity.     A new parameterization of an empirical model for wind/ocean scatterometry

    The power law form of the SEASAT A Scatterometer System (SASS) empirical backscatter-to-wind model function does not uniformly meet the instrument performance over the range 4 to 24 /ms. Analysis indicates that the horizontal polarization (H-Pol) and vertical polarization (V-Pol) components of the benchmark SASS1 model function yield self-consistent results only for a small mid-range of speeds at larger incidence angles, and for a somewhat larger range of speeds at smaller incidence angles. Comparison of SASS1 to in situ data over the Gulf of Alaska region further underscores the shortcomings of the power law form. Finally, a physically based empirical SASS model is proposed which corrects some of the deficiencies of power law models like SASS1. The new model allows the mutual determination of sea surface wind stress and wind speed in a consistent manner from SASS backscatter measurements

    Spectral Analysis of GRBs Measured by RHESSI

    The Ge spectrometer of the RHESSI satellite is sensitive to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) from about 40 keV up to 17 MeV, thus ideally complementing the Swift/BAT instrument whose sensitivity decreases above 150 keV. We present preliminary results of spectral fits of RHESSI GRB data.     Developing a second generation Laue lens prototype: high reflectivity crystals and accurate assembly

    Laue lenses are an emerging technology that will enhance gamma-ray telescope sensitivity by one to two orders of magnitude in selected energy bands of the \sim 100 keV to \sim 1.5 MeV range. This optic would be particularly well adapted to the observation of faint gamma ray lines, as required for the study of Supernovae and Galactic positron annihilation. It could also prove very useful for the study of hard X-ray tails from a variety of compact objects, especially making a difference by providing sufficient sensitivity for polarization to be measured by the focal plane detector. Our group has been addressing the two key issues relevant to improve performance with respect to the first generation of Laue lens prototypes: obtaining large numbers of efficient crystals and developing a method to fix them with accurate orientation and dense packing factor onto a substrate. We present preliminary results of an on-going study aiming to enable a large number of crystals suitable for diffraction at energies above 500 keV. In addition, we show the first results of the Laue lens prototype assembled using our beamline at SSL/UC Berkeley, which demonstrates our ability to orient and glue crystals with accuracy of a few arcsec, as required for an efficient Laue lens telescope.Comment: Published in the proceedings of the SPIE conference held in San Diego in August 201

    Adhesion of acidic lipid vesicles by 21.5 kDa (recombinant) and 18.5 kDa isoforms of myelin basic protein

    AbstractMyelin basic protein (MBP) is thought to be responsible for adhesion of the intracellular surfaces of compact myelin to give the major dense line. The 17 and 21.5 kDa isoforms containing exon II have been reported by others to localize to the cytoplasm and nucleus of murine oligodendrocytes and HeLa cells while the 14 and 18.5 kDa isoforms lacking exon II are confined to the plasma membrane. However, we show that the exon II− 18.5 kDa form and a recombinant exon II+ 21.5 kDa isoform both caused similar aggregation of acidic lipid vesicles, indicating that they should have similar abilities to bind to the intracellular lipid surface of the plasma membrane and to cause adhesion of those surfaces to each other. The circular dichroism spectra of the two isoforms indicated that both had a similar secondary structure. Thus, both isoforms should be able to bind to and cause adhesion of the cytosolic surfaces of compact myelin. The fact that they do not could be due to differences in post-translational modification in vivo, trafficking through the cell and/or subcellular location of synthesis, but it is not due to differences in their lipid binding

    A Note on Frame Dragging

    The measurement of spin effects in general relativity has recently taken centre stage with the successfully launched Gravity Probe B experiment coming toward an end, coupled with recently reported measurements using laser ranging. Many accounts of these experiments have been in terms of frame-dragging. We point out that this terminology has given rise to much confusion and that a better description is in terms of spin-orbit and spin-spin effects. In particular, we point out that the de Sitter precession (which has been mesured to a high accuracy) is also a frame-dragging effect and provides an accurate benchmark measurement of spin-orbit effects which GPB needs to emulate

    Spectra and Symmetry in Nuclear Pairing

    We apply the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to the nuclear pairing problem with orbit dependent coupling constants and degenerate single particle energy levels. We find the exact energies and eigenstates. We show that for a given shell, there are degeneracies between the states corresponding to less and more than half full shell. We also provide a technique to solve the equations of Bethe ansatz.Comment: 15 pages of REVTEX with 2 eps figure
