Novel Technique for Ultra-sensitive Determination of Trace Elements in Organic Scintillators
A technique based on neutron activation has been developed for an extremely
high sensitivity analysis of trace elements in organic materials. Organic
materials are sealed in plastic or high purity quartz and irradiated at the
HFIR and MITR. The most volatile materials such as liquid scintillator (LS) are
first preconcentrated by clean vacuum evaporation. Activities of interest are
separated from side activities by acid digestion and ion exchange. The
technique has been applied to study the liquid scintillator used in the KamLAND
neutrino experiment. Detection limits of <2.4X10**-15 g 40K/g LS, <5.5X10**-15
g Th/g LS, and <8X10**-15 g U/g LS have been achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments

Artificial Neural Networks Modeling to Reduce Industrial Air Pollution
Abstract. Nitric acid production plants emit small amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to the environment. As the regulatory authorities demand the reduction of the resulting air pollution, existing plants are looking for economical ways to comply with this demand. Several Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models were trained from several months of operating plant data to predict the NOx concentration in the tail gas, and their total amount emitted the environment. The training of the ANN model was done by the Guterman-Boger algorithm set that generates a non-random initial connection weights, suggests a small number of hidden neurons, avoids, and escapes from, local minima encountered during the training. The ANN models gave small errors, 0.6 % relative error on the NOx concentration prediction and 0.006 kg/hour on daily emission in the 20-45 kg NOx/hour range. Knowledge extraction from the trained ANN models revealed the underlying relationships between the plant operating variables and the NOx emission rate, especially the beneficial effect of cooling the absorbed gas and reticulating liquids in the absorption towers. Clustering the data by the patterns of the hidden neurons outputs of auto-associative ANN models of the same data revealed interesting insights
Detection of a Single Identical Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Strain in Recently Seroconverted Young Women
Infection with multiple CMV strains is common in immunocompromised hosts, but its occurrence in normal hosts has not been well-studied.We analyzed CMV strains longitudinally in women who acquired CMV while enrolled in a CMV glycoprotein B (gB) vaccine trial. Sequencing of four variable genes was performed in samples collected from seroconversion and up to 34 months thereafter.199 cultured isolates from 53 women and 65 original fluids from a subset of 19 women were sequenced. 51 women were infected with one strain each without evidence for genetic drift; only two women shed multiple strains. Genetic variability among strains increased with the number of sequenced genetic loci. Nevertheless, 13 of 53 women proved to be infected with an identical CMV strain based on sequencing at all four variable genes. CMV vaccine did not alter the degree of genetic diversity amongst strains.Primary CMV infection in healthy women nearly always involves shedding of one strain that remains stable over time. Immunization with CMVgB-1 vaccine strain is not selective against specific strains. Although 75% of women harbored their unique strain, or a strain shared with only one other woman, 25% shared a single common strain, suggesting that this predominant strain with a particular combination of genetic loci is advantageous in this large urban area
Penalty finite element approximations of the stationary power- law Stokes problem
Finite element approximations of the stationary power-law Stokes problem using penalty
formulation are considered. A priori error estimates under appropriate smoothness assumptions on the
solutions are established without assuming a discrete version of the BB condition. Numerical solutions
are presented by implementing a nonlinear conjugate gradient metho
The STACEE-32 Ground Based Gamma-ray Detector
We describe the design and performance of the Solar Tower Atmospheric
Cherenkov Effect Experiment detector in its initial configuration (STACEE-32).
STACEE is a new ground-based gamma ray detector using the atmospheric Cherenkov
technique. In STACEE, the heliostats of a solar energy research array are used
to collect and focus the Cherenkov photons produced in gamma-ray induced air
showers. The large Cherenkov photon collection area of STACEE results in a
gamma-ray energy threshold below that of previous detectors.Comment: 45 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments

Expanding the Repertoire of Natural Product-Inspired Ring Pairs for Molecular Recognition of DNA
A furan amino acid, inspired by the recently discovered proximicin natural products, was incorporated into the scaffold of a DNA-binding hairpin polyamide. While unpaired oligomers of 2,4-disubstituted furan amino acids show poor DNA-binding activity, furan (Fn) carboxamides paired with N-methylpyrrole (Py) and N-methylimidazole (Im) rings demonstrate excellent stabilization of duplex DNA as well as discrimination of noncognate sequences, consistent with function as a Py mimic according to the Py/Im polyamide pairing rules
Ex-vivo changes in amino acid concentrations from blood stored at room temperature or on ice: implications for arginine and taurine measurements
Background: Determination of the plasma concentrations of arginine and other amino acids is important for understanding pathophysiology, immunopathology and nutritional supplementation in human disease. Delays in processing of blood samples cause a change in amino acid concentrations, but this has not been precisely quantified. We aimed to describe the concentration time profile of twenty-two amino acids in blood from healthy volunteers, stored at room temperature or on ice. Methods: Venous blood was taken from six healthy volunteers and stored at room temperature or in an ice slurry. Plasma was separated at six time points over 24 hours and amino acid levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Median plasma arginine concentrations decreased rapidly at room temperature, with a 6% decrease at 30 minutes, 25% decrease at 2 hours and 43% decrease at 24 hours. Plasma ornithine increased exponentially over the same period. Plasma arginine was stable in blood stored on ice, with a < 10% change over 24 hours. Plasma taurine increased by 100% over 24 hours, and this change was not prevented by ice. Most other amino acids increased over time at room temperature but not on ice. Conclusion: Plasma arginine concentrations in stored blood fall rapidly at room temperature, but remain stable on ice for at least 24 hours. Blood samples taken for the determination of plasma amino acid concentrations either should be placed immediately on ice or processed within 30 minutes of collection
Study of and and
We study the decays of and to the final states
and based on a single
baryon tag method using data samples of
and events collected with
the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to
are observed for the first time. The
measured branching fractions of and
are in good agreement with, and much
more precise, than the previously published results. The angular parameters for
these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay
parameter for , , is found to be negative, different to the other
decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the "12\% rule" and isospin
symmetry in the and and
systems are tested.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. This version is consistent with paper published

Higher-order multipole amplitude measurement in
Using events collected with the BESIII detector at
the BEPCII storage ring, the higher-order multipole amplitudes in the radiative
transition are measured.
A fit to the production and decay angular distributions yields
and , where the first
errors are statistical and the second systematic. Here denotes the
normalized magnetic quadrupole amplitude and the normalized electric
octupole amplitude. This measurement shows evidence for the existence of the
signal with statistical significance and is consistent with
the charm quark having no anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
