The study presented the scale of foreign direct investments in Poland in the years 1993- 2004. It was found out that these investments related both to production and financial, commercial and logistical activity. A considerable part of investments was made in the agricultural and food industry, especially in the first years after the transition from a socialist economy to a market economy. The greatest resources were invested in the tobacco industry and then in the production of sweets and beverages. As a result of research it was found out that the agricultural and food industry in Poland developed dynamically after the transformation, both increasing the value of production and investing more than the consumption of fixed assets amounted to.foreign direct investments, agricultural and food industry., Agribusiness,

Cluster Initiatives in Poland as a Factor of Economic Development

    Get PDF
The cooperation of regional actors from science and business practices within a cluster affects both the competitiveness and innovativeness of companies and regions. The economic benefits achieved by companies participating in a cluster are varied and depend on the individual's experience, human and intellectual capital, organizational efficiency, etc. However, clusters are an important mechanism for stimulating innovation, and therefore in the knowledge-based economy, it is important to form such structures. As part of this publication, assumptions regarding a creation and development of a regional cluster and its positive impact on the economy, both local and regional, which indirectly contribute to economic growth, will be presented

Economic Impact of Integration in the Food Supply Chain

    Get PDF
Due to the nature of the food supply chain an important aspect in the context of increasing the efficiency of agri-food companies may be an increase of the integration's degree in the chain. Therefore, exploring the relationships among these variables was found as an important research area and adopted as the goal of the paper. The paper is focused mainly on the theoretical background showing relationship between integration and performance. A description of the theoretical and methodological aspects of performance measurement and its extension (including the integration aspect) was also made in the paper. For an empirical illustration of the analyzed relationships two steps will be made. Firstly, the integration's degree in the food chain was measured. Secondly, the efficiency of the companies from the cereals processing industry in Europe was assessed. The SFA models (e.g. trans-logarithmic and Cobb-Douglas functional form) were used for assessment of efficiency. By using stochastic method (e.g. the SFA), one may show the influence of external variable (the integration in the supply chain) on the economic performance of enterprises

Milk recording as a factor influencing the performance of the dairy sector in Poland

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the economic situation of dairy farms enrolled in milk recording and determine the impact of milk recording on the Polish dairy sector's productivity. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study involved agricultural holdings which specialized in dairy cattle farming in 2011-2013, kept continuous milk production records, conducted the required number of milk tests, were within the field of observation of the Polish Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), and kept continuous accounts during the investigated period. Findings: The article analyzes the Polish milk market and the size and milk performance of the dairy cow population in Poland relative to selected EU countries. Milk recording was defined, and its objectives, the relevant laws, and methods were presented. The resources, organizational structure, output, financial performance, production value, sales, costs, and income of dairy farms enrolled in milk recording (listed in SYMLEK and FADN databases), and dairy farms listed in the FADN database only were compared. The costs associated with milk recording and the share of recording costs in the evaluated dairy farms' total costs were estimated. Practical implications: The results will fill in the gap concerning factors influencing the dairy sector's performance in Poland. Originality/Value: The new information about the potential effects of milk recording in the entire population of dairy cows in Poland in 2012-2017 was analyzed.peer-reviewe

Impact of new member accession to the European Union on food trade

    Get PDF
Purpose: The main focus is on the export and import of agricultural products in the EU in the years 2002-2017 outside the EU (extra-EU). Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper investigates the impact of EU (European Union) enlargement on food trade using descriptive statistics. First, EU-28 exports, imports, and trade balance of agricultural products outside the EU (extra-EU) are presented for 2002-2017. Findings: The trade balance between EU countries for food, beverages, and tobacco are also presented. Accession has led to the elimination of trade tariffs and accelerated improvements in trade. The most exported products by EU countries were alcoholic beverages (spirits and liquors, wine, and vermouth), bakery products, and wheat. Most of the export of agri-food products is directed to other EU countries, Russia, China, and various countries in South America, Africa, and Asia. Imports to EU countries comprised mostly of vegetables and fruits, coffee, tea, cocoa, and various fish products. Practical implications: The results will fill in the gap concerning the food trade of agricultural products in the EU. Originality/Value: The new information about extra EU trade of agricultural products and a GARCH (Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroscedastic) model was presented.peer-reviewe

The aim of the study was to recognize the supply chains used in the marketing of fruit and their products, as well as the trends of changes in this sector. The object of the research was fruit production in the world and Poland. The study presents a diagram of the supply chain in agribusiness. A method of graphic presentation of the flow of raw materials and fruit products from producers of raw materials and means of production for agriculture to the final consumer was also used. Trends of changes in the production of fruit and their preserves are presented. The research used literature on the subject, available mass statistics data and data prepared by the Institute of Economics, Agriculture and Food Economy – the National Research Institute. Based on the research, it was found that the fruit logistics chain includes thousands of farmers, many agri-food processing units, wholesale and retail food trade. It must be very flexible, constantly adapting to the challenges of a changing, globalizing market. In conditions of dispersed fruit production, success is determined by the efficiency of chain management combined with solidarity and mutual trust of all participants in the flow of goods, information and financial resources
