    Proximity-induced density-of-states oscillations in a superconductor/strong-ferromagnet system

    We have measured the evolution of the tunneling density of states (DOS) in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers with increasing F-layer thickness, where F in our experiment is the strong ferromagnet Ni. As a function of increasing Ni thickness, we detect multiple oscillations in the DOS at the Fermi energy from differential conductance measurements. The features in the DOS associated with the proximity effect change from normal to inverted twice as the Ni thickness increases from 1 to 5 nm.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    In recognition of its centennial, the American Dairy Science Association (founded in July 1906) has produced this large (8 1/2 x 11) coffee-table book, chronicling the Association’s first 100 years. The book is richly illustrated with both black and white, and color photographs, gleaned from many academic dairy science programs, individual association members, and well-known dairy industry publications. Beginning with information on dairying prior to 1906 and the founding of the ADSA, the arrangement is then divided into 25-year intervals. Each of the four sections leads with a short overview of dairying, followed by line graphs of the number of milk cows, milk production, and consumption for the time period. A year-by-year summary of developments and significant events in the industry, and/or the Association, completes the information. The images throughout complement and reinforce the text, illustrating production and industry practices, research, changes in mechanization and technology, and consumer public relations. The volume ends with the ADSA Vision and Mission statements, lists of past-presidents and executive leadership, and an epilogue by a member of the Centennial Planning Committee

    WikiProject (Fill in the Blank) : Be a Wikipedian!

    Wikipedia is 16 years old this year. It is ranked the 5th most visited site on the World Wide Web. Many librarians and information specialists have a love hate relationship with this open access, free internet encyclopedia. Searching for information sometimes exposes: a lack of information, or even, existence of entries on specific topics; inaccurate information; or results in the frustration of a research dead end due to articles lacking references. Wikipedia is, of course, a collaboratively edited resource. A Wikipedia WikiProject is a group of contributors working together to improve the Wikipedia information and the pages on a particular topic or subject area. The library community is a logical group of potential participants to be involved in improving and expanding Wikipedia’s topics and articles. Be a part of providing quality content, updating, improving, editing, providing sources, or fact-checking areas in any area of personal interest and/or expertise. How to take a role in shaping the future of a WikiProject, and become involved at a level with which each individual is comfortable, will be highlighted

    A growing number of adult learners are turning to accelerated degree programs to complete an initial or more advanced college degree. While various aspects of these types of degree programs have been discussed in the literature, relatively little is known about how the epistemological beliefs as well as the self-directed learning readiness of adults who are enrolled in accelerated degree programs change over time. A discussion of the findings of recent research about the relationship and the development of these phenomena by adult learners along with implications for improved adult education form the basis for this research roundtable

    The circumbinary disk of HD 98800B: Evidence for disk warping

    The quadruple young stellar system HD 98800 consists of two spectroscopic binary pairs with a circumbinary disk around the B component. Recent work by Boden and collaborators using infrared interferometry and radial velocity data resulted in a determination of the physical orbit for HD 98800B. We use the resulting inclination of the binary and the measured extinction toward the B component stars to constrain the distribution of circumbinary material. Although a standard optically and geometrically thick disk model can reproduce the spectral energy distribution, it cannot account for the observed extinction if the binary and the disk are coplanar. We next constructed a dynamical model to investigate the influence of the A component, which is not in the Ba‐Bb orbital plane, on the B disk. We find that these interactions have a substantial impact on the inclination of the B circumbinary disk with respect to the Ba‐Bb orbital plane. The resulting warp would be sufficient to place material into the line of sight and the noncoplanar disk orientation may also cause the upper layers of the disk to intersect the line of sight if the disk is geometrically thick. These simulations also support that the dynamics of the Ba‐Bb orbit clear the inner region to a radius of~3 AU. We then discuss whether the somewhat unusual properties of the HD 98800B disk are consistent with material remnant from the star formation process or with more recent creation by collisions from larger bodies

    Connecting Print and Electronic Titles: An Integrated Approach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

    Libraries make heavy investments in electronic resources, with many of these resources reflecting title changes, bundled subsets, or content changes of formerly print material. These changes can distance the electronic format from its print origins, creating discovery and access issues. A task force was formed to explore the enhancement of catalog records to increase the connections between print and electronic titles, thus improving patron discovery and access to electronic resources. The investigation considered the relationships between parent and dependent titles, title changes, and publication subsets. The resulting recommendations included interdepartmental cooperation, record-display best practices, and methods for tracking catalog-record enhancements

    Extending the first-order post-Newtonian scheme in multiple systems to the second-order contributions to light propagation

    In this paper, we extend the first-order post-Newtonian scheme in multiple systems presented by Damour-Soffel-Xu to the second-order contribution to light propagation without changing the virtueof the scheme on the linear partial differential equations of the potential and vector potential. The spatial components of the metric are extended to second order level both in a global coordinates (qij/c4q_{ij}/ c^4) and a local coordinates (Qab/c4Q_{ab}/ c^4). The equations of qijq_{ij} (or QabQ_{ab}) are obtained from the field equations.The relationship between qijq_{ij} and QabQ_{ab} are presented in this paper also. In special case of the solar system (isotropic condition is applied (qij=δijqq_{ij} = \delta_{ij} q )), we obtain the solution of qq. Finally, a further extension of the second-order contributions in the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism is discussed.Comment: Latex2e; 6 pages PS fil
