On the interpretation of spin-polarized electron energy loss spectra
We study the origin of the structure in the spin-polarized electron energy
loss spectroscopy (SPEELS) spectra of ferromagnetic crystals. Our study is
based on a 3d tight-binding Fe model, with constant onsite Coulomb repulsion U
between electrons of opposite spin. We find it is not the total density of
Stoner states as a function of energy loss which determines the response of the
system in the Stoner region, as usually thought, but the densities of Stoner
states for only a few interband transitions. Which transitions are important
depends ultimately on how strongly umklapp processes couple the corresponding
bands. This allows us to show, in particular, that the Stoner peak in SPEELS
spectra does not necessarily indicate the value of the exchange splitting
energy. Thus, the common assumption that this peak allows us to estimate the
magnetic moment through its correlation with exchange splitting should be
reconsidered, both in bulk and surface studies. Furthermore, we are able to
show that the above mechanism is one of the main causes for the typical
broadness of experimental spectra. Finally, our model predicts that optical

The clinical, neuroanatomical, and neuropathologic phenotype of TBK1-associated frontotemporal dementia: A longitudinal case report
Introduction: Mutations in the TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) gene have recently been shown to cause frontotemporal dementia (FTD). However, the phenotype of TBK1-associated FTD is currently unclear. / Methods: We performed a single case longitudinal study of a patient who was subsequently found to have a novel A705fs mutation in the TBK1 gene. He was assessed annually for more than a 7-year period with a series of clinical, cognitive, and magnetic resonance imaging assessments. His brain underwent pathological examination at postmortem. / Results: The patient presented at the age of 64 years with an 18-month history of personality change including increased rigidity and obsessiveness, apathy, loss of empathy, and development of a sweet tooth. His mother had developed progressive behavioral and cognitive impairment from the age of 57 years. Neuropsychometry revealed intact cognition at first assessment. Magnetic resonance imaging showed focal right temporal lobe atrophy. Over the next few years his behavioral problems progressed and he developed cognitive impairment, initially with anomia and prosopagnosia. Neurological examination remained normal throughout without any features of motor neurone disease. He died at the age of 72 years and postmortem showed TDP-43 type A pathology but with an unusual novel feature of numerous TDP-43–positive neuritic structures at the cerebral cortex/subcortical white matter junction. There was also associated argyrophilic grain disease not previously reported in other TBK1 mutation cases. / Discussion: TBK1-associated FTD can be associated with right temporal variant FTD with progressive behavioral change and relatively intact cognition initially. The case further highlights the benefits of next-generation sequencing technologies in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders and the importance of detailed neuropathologic analysis
Study of the a_0(980) meson via the radiative decay phi->eta pi^0 gamma with the KLOE detector
We have studied the phi->a_0(980) gamma process with the KLOE detector at the
Frascati phi-factory DAPhNE by detecting the phi->eta pi^0 gamma decays in the
final states with eta->gamma gamma and eta->pi^+ pi^- pi^0. We have measured
the branching ratios for both final states: Br(phi->eta pi^0 gamma)=(7.01 +/-
0.10 +/- 0.20)x10^-5 and (7.12 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22)x10^-5 respectively. We have
also extracted the a_0(980) mass and its couplings to eta pi^0, K^+ K^-, and to
the phi meson from the fit of the eta pi^0 invariant mass distributions using

A Study of the Radiative Ke3 Decay and Search for Direct Photon Emission with the KLOE Detector
We present a measurement of the ratio R =
\Gamma(\keg;\Estar>30\mev,\qstar>20^\circ)\Gamma(\kegf) of data corresponding to about 3.5
million Ke3(g) events and about 9000 radiative events. Our result is R=(924 +/-
23(stat) +/-16(syst)10^{-5} for the branching ratio and X=-2.3 +/- 1.3(stat)
+/- 1.4(syst) for the parameter describing direct emission.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
A global fit to determine the pseudoscalar mixing angle and the gluonium content of the eta' meson
We update the values of the eta-eta' mixing angle and of the eta' gluonium
content by fitting our measurement R_phi = BR(phi to eta' gamma)/ BR(phi to eta
gamma) together with several vector meson radiative decays to pseudoscalars (V
to P gamma), pseudoscalar mesons radiative decays to vectors (P to V gamma) and
the eta' to gamma gamma, pi^0 to gamma gamma widths. From the fit we extract a
gluonium fraction of Z^2_G = 0.12 +- 0.04, the pseudoscalar mixing angle psi_P
= (40.4 +- 0.6) degree and the phi-omega mixing angle psi_V = (3.32 +- 0.09)
degree. Z^2_G and psi_P are fairly consistent with those previously published.
We also evaluate the impact on the eta' gluonium content determination of
future experimental improvements of the eta' branching ratios and decay width.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures to submit to JHE
Measurement of the slope parameter with the KLOE detector
We present a measurement of the slope parameter for the decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DANE -factory,
based on a background free sample of 17 millions mesons produced
in radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we
determine \alpha = -0.0301 \pm 0.0035\,stat\;_{-0.0035}^{+0.0022}\,syst\,.
The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and
photo-production experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
Precision Measurement of KS Meson Lifetime with the KLOE detector
Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE
detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper
time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This
is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average
derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on
the direction of the Ks.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Measurement of the K_L \to \pi\mu\nu form factor parameters with the KLOE detector
Using 328 pb^{-1}of data collected at DAFNE corresponding to 1.8
million decays, we have measured the form factor
parameters. The structure of the vector-current provides information
about the dynamics of the strong interaction; its knowledge is necessary for
evaluation of the phase-space integral required for measuring the CKM matrix
element and for testing lepton universality in kaon decays. Using a
new parametrization for the vector and scalar form factors, we find
=\pt(25.7\pm 0.6),-3, and =\pt(14.0\pm 2.1),-3,. Our
result for , together with recent lattice calculations of ,
and , satisfies the Callan-Trieman relatio
