Interbacterial competition mediated by the type VIIb secretion system
\ua9 2023 The Authors. Successful occupancy of a given niche requires the colonising bacteria to interact extensively with the biotic and abiotic environment, including other resident microbes. Bacteria have evolved a range of protein secretion machines for this purpose with eleven such systems identified to date. The type VIIb secretion system (T7SSb) is utilised by Bacillota to secrete a range of protein substrates, including antibacterial toxins targeting closely related strains, and the system as a whole has been implicated in a range of activities such as iron acquisition, intercellular signalling, host colonisation and virulence. This review covers the components and secretion mechanism of the T7SSb, the substrates of these systems and their roles in Gram-positive bacteria, with a focus on interbacterial competition
Gyrotropic impact upon negatively refracting surfaces
Surface wave propagation at the interface between different types of gyrotropic materials and an isotropic negatively refracting medium, in which the relative permittivity and relative permeability are, simultaneously, negative is investigated. A general approach is taken that embraces both gyroelectric and gyromagnetic materials, permitting the possibility of operating in either the low GHz, THz or the optical frequency regimes. The classical transverse Voigt configuration is adopted and a complete analysis of non-reciprocal surface wave dispersion is presented. The impact of the surface polariton modes upon the reflection of both plane waves and beams is discussed in terms of resonances and an example of the influence upon the Goos–Hänchen shift is given
Addressing Food Insecurity During COVID-19: A Role for Rural Federally Qualified Health Centers
In rural communities, existing food insecurity, chronic diseases, and an aging population create a complex environment that has the potential to strain health systems despite lower overall COVID-19 case counts. Past pandemics have revealed that populations served by the primary
care safety net require resources beyond federal and state aid programs. At our federally qualified health center (FQHC), we have adapted our food prescription program for patients with chronic diseases to a home delivery service, which leverages existing relationships between care coordinators and patients. Such efforts may fill underlying gaps in food supply and distribution through cross-sector collaboration with farms and non-governmental agencies. The current
pandemic highlights an opportunity for FQHCs to proactively engage with communities and build upon existing outreach efforts to address issues of nutrition and food access. Calculating Nonlocal Optical Properties of Structures with Arbitrary Shape
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 097403 (2009)], we outlined a
computational method to calculate the optical properties of structures with a
spatially nonlocal dielectric function. In this Article, we detail the full
method, and verify it against analytical results for cylindrical nanowires.
Then, as examples of our method, we calculate the optical properties of Au
nanostructures in one, two, and three dimensions. We first calculate the
transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra of thin films. Because of
their simplicity, these systems demonstrate clearly the longitudinal (or
volume) plasmons characteristic of nonlocal effects, which result in anomalous
absorption and plasmon blueshifting. We then study the optical properties of
spherical nanoparticles, which also exhibit such nonlocal effects. Finally, we
compare the maximum and average electric field enhancements around nanowires of
various shapes to local theory predictions. We demonstrate that when nonlocal

Molecular and serological survey of selected viruses in free-ranging wild ruminants in Iran
A molecular and serological survey of selected viruses in free-ranging wild ruminants was conducted in 13 different districts in Iran. Samples were collected from 64 small wild ruminants belonging to four different species including 25 Mouflon (Ovis orientalis), 22 wild goat (Capra aegagrus), nine Indian gazelle (Gazella bennettii) and eight Goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) during the national survey for wildlife diseases in Iran. Serum samples were evaluated using serologic antibody tests for Peste de petits ruminants virus (PPRV), Pestiviruses [Border Disease virus (BVD) and Bovine Viral Diarrhoea virus (BVDV)], Bluetongue virus (BTV), Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1), and Parainfluenza type 3 (PI3). Sera were also ELISA tested for Pestivirus antigen. Tissue samples including spleen, liver, lung, tonsils, mesenteric and mediastinal lymph nodes and white blood cells (WBCs) were tested using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for PPRV, Foot and Mouth Disease virus (FMDV), Pestivirus, BTV, Ovine herpesvirus type 2 (OvHV-2) and BHV-1. Serologic tests were positive for antibodies against PPRV (17%), Pestiviruses (2%) and BTV (2%). No antibodies were detected for BHV-1 or PI3, and no Pestivirus antigen was detected. PCR results were positive for PPRV (7.8%), FMDV (11%), BTV (3%), OvHV-2 (31%) and BHV-1 (1.5%). Symmetry breaking and manipulation of nonlinear optical modes in an asymmetric double-channel waveguide
We study light-beam propagation in a nonlinear coupler with an asymmetric
double-channel waveguide and derive various analytical forms of optical modes.
The results show that the symmetry-preserving modes in a symmetric
double-channel waveguide are deformed due to the asymmetry of the two-channel
waveguide, yet such a coupler supports the symmetry-breaking modes. The
dispersion relations reveal that the system with self-focusing nonlinear
response supports the degenerate modes, while for self-defocusingmedium the
degenerate modes do not exist. Furthermore, nonlinear manipulation is
investigated by launching optical modes supported in double-channel waveguide
into a nonlinear uniform medium.Comment: 10 page
Determination of semi-arid landscape endmembers and seasonal trends using convex geometry spectral unmixing techniques
Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data were acquired during three consecutive growing seasons (26 September 1989, 22 March 1990, and 7 August 1990) over an area of the High Plains east of Greeley, Colorado (40 deg 20 min N and 104 deg 16 min W). A repeat visit to assess vegetation at its peak growth was flown on 6 June 1993. This region contains extensive eolian deposits in the form of stabilized dune complexes (small scale parabolic dunes superimposed on large scale longitudinal and parabolic dunes). Due to the dunes' large scale (2-10 km) and low relief (1-5 m), the scaling and morphological relationships that contribute to the evolution of this landscape are nearly impossible to understand without the use of remote sensing. Additionally, this area and regions similarly situated could be the first to experience the effects caused by global climate change. During the past 10,000 years there were at least four periods of extensive sand activity due to climate change, followed by periods of landscape stability, as shown in the stratigraphic record of this area
Electrodeposition of platinum on titanium felt in a rectangular channel flow cell
Highly porous platinised titanium substrates are attractive electrode materials for industrial electrochemical processing and electrochemical energy storage. The electrodeposition of platinum on titanium felt was carried out in a divided, rectangular channel flow cell from an alkaline bath without additives. The morphology and spatial distribution of the platinum deposits in the porous material were analysed using SEM and EDS microscopy in addition to X-ray computed tomography (CT). The electroplated surface area was estimated from the charge transfer current ratio for Ce(IV) reduction and related to a theoretical electrosorbed hydrogen monolayer surface area. The platinised titanium felt showed a significant enhancement of active surface area in comparison to conventional electrode materials. Although platinum was present throughout the porous electrode, CT revealed heterogeneous deposits accumulating in regions near the membrane (during electrodeposition), as a result of the potential distribution in the felt material and flowing electrolyte.
