    What Makes Some People Think Astrology Is Scientific?

    Citizens in both North America and Europe are apt to read horoscope columns in newspapers and magazines. While some people read these casually and purely for entertainment, some believe that astrology has scientific status and can provide real insight into events and personality. Using data from a European survey, this article explores some of the reasons why some people think that astrology is scientific and how astrology is viewed in relation to other knowledge-producing practices. Three hypotheses in particular are tested. The first is that some Europeans lack the necessary scientific literacy to distinguish science from pseudoscience. The second is that people are confused about what astrology actually is. The third is derived from Adorno’s work on authoritarianism and the occult and postulates that those who adhere to authoritarian values are more likely to believe in astrological claims. Support is found for all three hypotheses. </jats:p

    Global education for global understanding : the case of Finland

    This chapter investigates the role of global understanding in Finnish geography education. A short overview of thematic changes in curricula, both locally and globally, precedes an analytical report of current framework curricula for primary and secondary schools. A description of the 10-year-long history of global education in Finnish educational reports is followed by a focus on the practice of teaching. Two geography teachers (two of the authors of this chapter) tell their views on how geography can enhance global understanding, and ultimately create links between local and global dimensions. Explains invalidity on the basis of an excess of the surveyors’ statutory authority. Defines this authority in terms of jurisdiction and power. Demonstrates the limits of the surveyors’ authority and emphasises the importance of strict compliance with statutory procedures. Concludes that surveyors should adopt an inquisitive and analytical approach to the scope of their authority to avoid the possibility of invalid awards.     PCSK9 Inhibitors in Secondary Prevention – An Opportunity for Personalized Therapy

    Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary cause of ASCVD and reducing LDL-C levels with statin therapy significantly reduces ASCVD risk; however, significant residual risk remains. Two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), alirocumab and evolocumab, that target proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin-type 9 (PCSK9), reduce LDL-C levels by up to 60% when used in combination with statins and significantly reduce the risk of recurrent ASCVD events in both stable secondary prevention and acute coronary syndrome populations. Pre-specified analyses of recent randomized controlled trials have shed light on how best to prioritize these therapies to maximize their value in select high risk groups. These data have also informed recent clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements resulting in an expanded role for PCSK9-mAbs compared to previous guidelines, albeit there are notable differences between these recommendations. Ongoing research is exploring the long-term safety of PCSK9-mAbs and their role in the acute setting as well as patients without prior myocardial infarction or stroke. Novel therapies that inhibit PCSK9 synthesis via small interfering RNA, such as inclisiran, are also in development and may reduce LDL-C levels similar to PCSK9-mAbs but with less frequent administration. Nonetheless, the PCSK9-mAbs are a breakthrough therapy and warrant consideration in very-high risk patients who are most likely to benefit. Such a personalized approach can help to ensure cost-effectiveness and maximize their value

    Tourist Shoppers’ Evaluation of Retail Service: A Study of Cross-Border versus International Outshoppers

    This article extends the concept of customer perceived value (CPV) to the tourist outshopping context and explores the differences in antecedents and outcomes of CPV between cross-border and international outshoppers. A large-scale field survey in Hong Kong with cross-border outshoppers from mainland China and international shoppers from four Western countries (Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States) shows that perceived product quality, risk, and value for money have a stronger effect on CPV for cross-border outshoppers, and employee service quality and lifestyle congruence for international outshoppers. CPV also has a stronger positive effect on satisfaction, word of mouth, and repeat purchase intentions for cross-border outshoppers, whereas satisfaction has a stronger positive impact on word of mouth and repeat purchase intentions for international outshoppers. We discuss the conceptual contribution and managerial implications of our findings for international retailers, researchers, and tourism organizations

    Integral Multiphase Turbulence Compressible Jet Expansion Model for Accidental Releases from Pressurized Containments

    The accurate prediction of the conditions of a pressurized jet upon its expansion to atmospheric pressure is of fundamental importance in assessing the consequences associated with accidental releases of hazardous fluids from pressurized containments. An integral multiphase compressible jet expansion model which for the first time accounts for turbulence generation is presented. Real fluid behavior is accounted for applying a suitable equation of state. By use of the accidental release of two-phase CO2 from a pressurized system as an example, the proposed model is shown to provide far better predictions of the fully expanded jet momentum and hence its downstream flow characteristics as compared to existing integral models where the impact of turbulence generation is ignored
