Hydrodynamical and radiative modeling of temporal H{\alpha} emission V/R variations caused by a discontinuous mass transfer in binaries
H{\alpha} emission V/R variations caused by a discontinous mass transfer in
interacting binaries with a rapidly rotating accreting star are modelled
qualititatively for the first time. The program ZEUS-MP was used for a
non-linear 3-D hydrodynamical modeling of a development of a blob of gaseous
material injected into an orbit around a star. It resulted in the formation of
an elongated disk with a slow prograde revolution. The LTE radiative transfer
program SHELLSPEC was used to calculate the H{\alpha} profiles originating in
the disk for several phases of its revolution. The profiles have the form of a
double emission and exhibit V/R and radial velocity variations. However, these
variations should be a temporal phenomenon since imposing a viscosity in given
model would lead to a circularization of the disk and fading-out of given
variations.Comment: accepted for a publication in Astronomical Journa
Severe Generalized Periodontitis in a Patient with an Aplastic Anemia: a 5 Year Follow-up Case Report
Aplastic anemia is a hematological disorder characterized by pancytopenia. This case report presents a young patient with untreated periodontitis associated with hematological disorders, and
cyclosporine therapy. During 2 consecutive days, periodontal therapy which consisted of nonsurgical therapy supplemented with an antibiotic treatment and antifibrinolytic therapy was performed.
Commercial microbiological PCR tests and periodontitis IL-1 polymorphism risk test were performed. Following the periodontal therapy, the inflammation was resolved and the patient’s occlusion was restored by means of removable partial dentures. After the 5 year follow-up, the patient still remained with shallow probing depths although there was inadequate compliance during the maintenance phase. Aplastic anemia increases the risk of onset of severe forms of
periodontitis that can be additionally complicated with cyclosporine therapy. In such patients, periodontal therapy must be supplemented with antibiotics
Periodontal Disease and its Association with Angiographically Verified Coronary Artery Disease
Materijal i metode:
boli u prsima obavljena koronarna angiografija. Temeljiti klinički pregled sastojao se od bilježenja
parodontoloških indeksa te kliničkih i socijalno-demografskih parametara. Ispitanici su bili
podijeljeni u dvije skupine: ispitivanu – u njoj su sudjelovali bolesnici s akutnim koronarnim sindromom
(ACS-om) i stabilnom koronarnom arterijskom bolesti (CAD-om) i kontrolnu – s ispitanicima
bez značajne koronarne arterijske bolesti. Podatci su analizirani Kruskal-Wallisovim i Pearsonovim
hi-kvadrat testom. Rezultati: Od 106 ispitanika njih 66 (62,3 %) hospitalizirani su zbog
ACS-a, a 22 (20,7 %) zbog stabilnoga CAD-a.
(p < 0,05). Kronični parodontitis najčešći je nalaz u obje ispitivane skupine – 68,2 posto u skupini
s ACS-om i 54,5 posto u onoj sa stabilnim CAD-om, a najviše zdravih pacijenta bez parodontitisa
(72,6 %) bilo je u kontrolnoj skupini (p < 0,001). Skupina sa stabilnim CAD-om imala je najvišu
srednju vrijednost dubine sondiranja (PD) 3,92 ± 1,16, recesije gingive (GR) 1,34 ± 0,78, razine
kliničkog pričvrstka (CAL) 4,60 ± 1,41 i krvarenja pri sondiranju (BOP) 45,98 ± 26,19. U skupini s
ACS-om PD je bio 3,77 ± 0,91, GR 1,11 ± 0,66, CAL 4,32 ± 1,08 i BOP 41,30 ± 22,09, a u kontrolnoj
skupini izmjeren je PD 3,27 ± 0,97, GR 0,69 ± 0,37, CAL 3,62 ± 1,04 i BOP 26,39 ± 13,92 (p <
higijena i parodontna upala.Purpose: The aim of this research was to investigate the association of chronic and aggressive
periodontitis with the severity of coronary artery disease which was angiographically verified.
Material and methods: Subjects were selected among the hospitalized patients at the University
Hospital Centre Zagreb who had coronary angiography done because of the chest pain. Thorough
clinical examination included periodontal indices and clinical and socio-demographic characteristics
of participants. Subjects were divided in two test groups, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and
stable coronary artery disease (CAD), and the control group with no significant CAD. Data were
analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Pearson’s Chi-Square test. Results: From 106 subjects, 66
(62.3%) were hospitalized for ACS, 22 (20.7%) had stable CAD and only 18 (17.0%) had no significant
CAD. Only 26 (24.5%) out of 106 patients were never smokers (p<0.05). Chronic periodontitis
was the most common finding with 68.2% in ACS group and 54.5% in stable CAD group, while
healthy patients without periodontitis (72.6%) were dominant in the control group (p<0.001).
Stable CAD group had the highest mean probing depth (PD) 3.92±1.16, gingival recession (GR)
1.34±0.78, clinical attachment level (CAL) 4.60±1.41 and bleeding on probing (BOP) 45.98±26.19
values, whereas ACS group had mean PD value of 3.77±0.91, GR 1.11±0.66, CAL 4.32±1.08 and
BOP 41.30±22.09, and no significant CAD group had mean PD value of 3.27±0.97, GR 0.69±0.37,
CAL 3.62±1.04 and BOP 26.39±13.92 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Periodontitis was shown to be associated
with angiographically verified coronary artery disease. Physical inactivity, poor oral hygiene
and periodontal inflammation were observed in patients with ACS and stable CAD
Exploring the Variable Sky with LINEAR. III. Classification of Periodic Light Curves
We describe the construction of a highly reliable sample of ~7000 optically faint periodic variable stars with light curves obtained by the asteroid survey LINEAR across 10,000 deg^2 of the northern sky. The majority of these variables have not been cataloged yet. The sample flux limit is several magnitudes fainter than most other wide-angle surveys; the photometric errors range from ~0.03 mag at r = 15 to ~0.20 mag at r = 18. Light curves include on average 250 data points, collected over about a decade. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) based photometric recalibration of the LINEAR data for about 25 million objects, we selected ~200,000 most probable candidate variables with r < 17 and visually confirmed and classified ~7000 periodic variables using phased light curves. The reliability and uniformity of visual classification across eight human classifiers was calibrated and tested using a catalog of variable stars from the SDSS Stripe 82 region and verified using an unsupervised machine learning approach. The resulting sample of periodic LINEAR variables is dominated by 3900 RR Lyrae stars and 2700 eclipsing binary stars of all subtypes and includes small fractions of relatively rare populations such as asymptotic giant branch stars and SX Phoenicis stars. We discuss the distribution of these mostly uncataloged variables in various diagrams constructed with optical-to-infrared SDSS, Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer photometry, and with LINEAR light-curve features. We find that the combination of light-curve features and colors enables classification schemes much more powerful than when colors or light curves are each used separately. An interesting side result is a robust and precise quantitative description of a strong correlation between the light-curve period and color/spectral type for close and contact eclipsing binary stars (β Lyrae and W UMa): as the color-based spectral type varies from K4 to F5, the median period increases from 5.9 hr to 8.8 hr. These large samples of robustly classified variable stars will enable detailed statistical studies of the Galactic structure and physics of binary and other stars and we make these samples publicly available
