    Silent MST approximation for tiny memory

    In network distributed computing, minimum spanning tree (MST) is one of the key problems, and silent self-stabilization one of the most demanding fault-tolerance properties. For this problem and this model, a polynomial-time algorithm with O(log2 ⁣n)O(\log^2\!n) memory is known for the state model. This is memory optimal for weights in the classic [1,poly(n)][1,\text{poly}(n)] range (where nn is the size of the network). In this paper, we go below this O(log2 ⁣n)O(\log^2\!n) memory, using approximation and parametrized complexity. More specifically, our contributions are two-fold. We introduce a second parameter~ss, which is the space needed to encode a weight, and we design a silent polynomial-time self-stabilizing algorithm, with space O(logns)O(\log n \cdot s). In turn, this allows us to get an approximation algorithm for the problem, with a trade-off between the approximation ratio of the solution and the space used. For polynomial weights, this trade-off goes smoothly from memory O(logn)O(\log n) for an nn-approximation, to memory O(log2 ⁣n)O(\log^2\!n) for exact solutions, with for example memory O(lognloglogn)O(\log n\log\log n) for a 2-approximation

    Assumptions applied in Orthodox Economic methods are criticised for being an inadequate depiction of reality. This is particularly the case from the perspective of Feminist Economics. Gender biases are reflected in the quantitative data sources and methods commonly applied for economic research. These include male biases in statistical data, a focus on outcomes rather than processes as well as the neglect of reproductive work and its interaction with market work. To overcome these problems, this paper introduces between-method triangulation, i.e. the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data generation and analysis, as an innovative and more realistic methodology to conduct gendered economic analysis. It draws on the authors’ recent empirical work on the Indonesian and Mauritian labour markets where between-method triangulation was employed. The approach is shown to be able to enhance empirical economic analysis by mutually validating results. Furthermore, the approach is shown to remove gender biases in economic analysis by analysing conflicting evidence and by complementing quantitative with qualitative findings in light of feminist economics theory

    Hyperfine Structure Constants for Eu Isotopes: Is The Empirical Formula of HFS Anomaly Universal ?

    We calculate the hyperfine structure constant for the Eu isotopes with shell model wave functions. The calculated results are compared with those predicted by the Moskowitz-Lombardi (M-L) empirical formula. It turns out that the two approaches give the very different behaviors of the hfs constants in the isotope dependence. This should be easily measured by experiment, which may lead to the universality check of the M-L formula.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, two figure

    Thermodynamic potential with correct asymptotics for PNJL model

    An attempt is made to resolve certain incongruities within the Nambu - Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and Polyakov loop extended NJL models (PNJL) which currently are used to extract the thermodynamic characteristics of the quark-gluon system. It is argued that the most attractive resolution of these incongruities is the possibility to obtain the thermodynamic potential directly from the corresponding extremum conditions (gap equations) by integrating them, an integration constant being fixed in accordance with the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The advantage of the approach is that the regulator is kept finite both in divergent and finite valued integrals at finite temperature and chemical potential.     Identification of TMEM206 proteins as pore of ASOR acid-sensitive chloride channels

    Acid-sensing ion channels have important functions in physiology and pathology, but the molecular composition of acid-activated anion channels had remained unclear. We now used a genome-wide siRNA screen to molecularly identify the widely expressed acid-sensitive outwardly-rectifying ASOR chloride channel. ASOR is formed by TMEM206 proteins which display two transmembrane domains (TMs) and are expressed at the plasma membrane. Ion permeation-changing mutations along the length of TM2 and at the end of TM1 suggest that these segments line ASOR's pore. While not belonging to a gene family, TMEM206 has orthologs in probably all vertebrates. Currents from evolutionarily distant orthologs share activation by protons, a feature essential for ASOR's role in acid-induced cell death. TMEM206 defines a novel class of ion channels. Its identification will help to understand its physiological roles and the diverse ways by which anion-selective pores can be formed

    Exchange Currents for Hypernuclear Magnetic Moments

    The meson(K and π\pi) exchange currents for the hypernuclear magnetic moments are calculated using the effective Lagrangian method. The seagull diagram, the mesonic diagram and the Σ0\Sigma^0-excitation diagram are considered. The Λ\Lambda-N exchange magnetic moments for the Λ5He{}^5_{\Lambda}He, Λ6He{}^6_{\Lambda}He and Λ6Li{}^6_{\Lambda}Li are calculated employing the harmonic oscillator shell model. It is found that the two-body correction is about -9% of the single particle value for Λ5He{}^5_{\Lambda}He. The π\pi exchange current, induced only in the Σ0\Sigma^0-excitation diagram, is found to give dominant contribution for the isovector magnetic moments of hypernuclei with A=6.Comment: 11pp, LaTeX, 7 EPS figures, uses epsf.st

    Time reversal invariance violating parity conserving effects for low energy elastic neutron deuteron scattering are calculated for meson exchange and EFT-type of potentials in a Distorted Wave Born Approximation, using realistic hadronic wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev equations in configuration space.Comment: There was a technical mistake in calculations due to singular behavior of Yukawa functions at short range.
