    Amphiphile-Induced Anisotropic Colloidal Self-Assembly

Spherical colloidal particles typically self-assemble into hexagonal lattices when adsorbed at liquid interfaces. More complex assembly structures, including particle chains and phases with square symmetry, were theoretically predicted almost two decades ago for spherical particles interacting via a soft repulsive shoulder. Here, we demonstrate that such complex assembly phases can be experimentally realized with spherical colloidal particles assembled at the air/water interface in the presence of molecular amphiphiles. We investigate the interfacial behavior of colloidal particles in the presence of different amphiphiles on a Langmuir trough. We transfer the structures formed at the interface onto a solid substrate while continuously compressing, which enables us to correlate the prevailing assembly phase as a function of the available interfacial area. We observe that block copolymers with similarities to the chemical nature of the colloidal particles, as well as the surface-active protein bovine serum albumin, direct the colloidal particles into complex assembly phases, including chains and square arrangements. The observed structures are reproduced by minimum energy calculations of hard core–soft shoulder particles with experimentally realistic interaction parameters. From the agreement between experiments and theory, we hypothesize that the presence of the amphiphiles manipulates the interaction potential of the colloidal particles. The assembly of spherical colloidal particles into complex assembly phases on solid substrates opens new possibilities for surface patterning by enriching the library of possible structures available for colloidal lithography

Temozolomide is additive with cytotoxic effect of irradiation in canine glioma cell lines

Background: Similar to human glioblastoma patients, glial tumours in dogs have high treatment resistance and a guarded prognosis. In human medicine, the addition of temozolomide to radiotherapy leads to a favourable outcome in vivo as well as a higher antiproliferative effect on tumour cells in vitro. Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the radio- and temozolomide-sensitivity of three canine glial tumour cell lines and to investigate a potential additive cytotoxic effect in combined treatment. Additionally, we wanted to detect the level of MGMT promoter methylation in these cell lines and to investigate a potential association between MGMT promoter methylation and treatment resistance. Methods: Cells were treated with various concentrations of temozolomide and/or irradiated with 4 and 8 Gy. Radiosensitization by temozolomide was evaluated using proliferation assay and clonogenic assay, and MGMT DNA methylation was investigated using bisulfite next-generation sequencing. Results: In all tested canine cell lines, clonogenicity was inhibited significantly in combined treatment compared to radiation alone. All canine glial cell lines tested in this study were found to have high methylation levels of MGMT promoter. Conclusions: Hence, an additive effect of combined treatment in MGMT negative canine glial tumour cell lines in vitro was detected. This motivates to further investigate the association between treatment resistance and MGMT, such as MGMT promoter methylation status

PYROMEMS IGNITER BASED ON A TEMPERATURE GRADIENT: CONCEPT, FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION

    Get PDF
A pyroMEMS igniter with increased combustion reliability is presented. The igniter consisted of a thin-film platinum Joule heater fabricated on a borosilicate glass substrate. Two different igniter layouts (meandering and annular) and three different binder mass fractions (5, 10 and 20 %) were evaluated. High-speed videos were used to judge the success or failure of the combustion events. Although the ignition success rate was 100 %, the combustion success rate was approximately 87.5 ± 7.1 % for the annular design versus 12.5 ± 7.1 % for the meandering layout. No effect on success rate was observed for the different binder contents tested. Rather, increasing the binder mass fraction increased the combustion duration

A fast ILP-based Heuristic for the robust design of Body Wireless Sensor Networks

We consider the problem of optimally designing a body wireless sensor network, while taking into account the uncertainty of data generation of biosensors. Since the related min-max robustness Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem can be difficult to solve even for state-of-the-art commercial optimization solvers, we propose an original heuristic for its solution. The heuristic combines deterministic and probabilistic variable fixing strategies, guided by the information coming from strengthened linear relaxations of the ILP robust model, and includes a very large neighborhood search for reparation and improvement of generated solutions, formulated as an ILP problem solved exactly. Computational tests on realistic instances show that our heuristic finds solutions of much higher quality than a state-of-the-art solver and than an effective benchmark heuristic.Comment: This is the authors' final version of the paper published in G.
