Observations of Surface Water Extent for the Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico

    Get PDF
Since the launch of NASA’s Terra satellite in December 1999 the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) radiometer has made more than two dozen of observations of the Elephant Butte Reservoir located on the Rio Grande river in central New Mexico. The first observations were in June 2000 and the most recent were in May 2005. This period includes low water levels resulting from the the recent drought conditions and the earlier full high water conditions in 2000. There was about a 25 m change in water level during this time. The area of the reservoir was estimated for each of these scenes and compared with known water levels. The ASTER data were the Level 2 products which include both the visible reflectance and the thermal infrared (surface temperature). Both spectral regions provide good contrasts between water and surrounding land. This contrast makes the area estimation straightforward. There was a large range in surface water area observed from 30,000 km2 to more than 75,000 km2. An approximately linear relation between area and water level was found

The Surgical Management of Ebstein Anomaly

    Get PDF
Among all congenital heart disease, Ebstein anomaly is the lesion with the widest spectrum of presentation. It can present as early as the neonatal period where immediate intervention is often needed to the adult with no discernable symptoms. It is also one where overall outcome greatly relates to age at presentation. Generally, presentation in the neonatal period is associated with poor outcomes while presentation beyond the neonatal period has excellent outcomes with low operative mortality. It is thus apparent that understanding every aspect of the anatomy and physiology of Ebstein anomaly and how it manifests clinically is paramount to successful treatment. The purpose of this review is to outline the current concepts and strategies in the surgical management of Ebstein anomaly, and to discuss the current expert consensus on how best to tackle this congenital heart disease at different ages of diagnosis

Heart Transplantation for Adult Congenital Heart Disease: Overview and Special Considerations

    Get PDF
With improvements in their surgical and medical management, the number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) reaching adulthood has increased over the last decade. As the population of adult CHD patients continues to rise, an increasing number of these patients will require evaluation for heart transplantation. It is important to recognize advanced heart failure and other associated complications early in this cohort of complex patients for early referral to an adult CHD specialist. As these patients present with unique challenges because of their multiple comorbidities and complex anatomy, there needs to be a careful selection process for transplantation to optimize the utilization of donor organs

Sequence analysis of the cloned streptococcal cell surface antigen I/II

AbstractThe gene spa P (formerly designated as spa P1) encoding the Mr 185,000 surface antigen (I/II) of Streptococcus mutons, serotype c (NG5), has been sequenced. The gene (4683 bp) encodes a protein of 1561 amino acid residues including putative signal peptide (residues 1–38) and transmembrane (residues 1537–1556) sequences. The N-terminal region (60–550) has alanine-rich repeats and is predicted to be Ξ±-helical. However, the C-ternunal region (800–1540) is proline-rich and favours an extended structure. Except for a short central variable region the sequences appear to be highly conserved for S. mutans serotype c. N-Tenninal sequencing of separated antigen I and antigen II polypeptides suggests that the former represents the N-terminal and the latter the C-terminal portions of the intact antigen

    Genetic Diversity among Enterococcus faecalis

Enterococcus faecalis, a ubiquitous member of mammalian gastrointestinal flora, is a leading cause of nosocomial infections and a growing public health concern. The enterococci responsible for these infections are often resistant to multiple antibiotics and have become notorious for their ability to acquire and disseminate antibiotic resistances. In the current study, we examined genetic relationships among 106 strains of E. faecalis isolated over the past 100 years, including strains identified for their diversity and used historically for serotyping, strains that have been adapted for laboratory use, and isolates from previously described E. faecalis infection outbreaks. This collection also includes isolates first characterized as having novel plasmids, virulence traits, antibiotic resistances, and pathogenicity island (PAI) components. We evaluated variation in factors contributing to pathogenicity, including toxin production, antibiotic resistance, polymorphism in the capsule (cps) operon, pathogenicity island (PAI) gene content, and other accessory factors. This information was correlated with multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) data, which was used to define genetic lineages. Our findings show that virulence and antibiotic resistance traits can be found within many diverse lineages of E. faecalis. However, lineages have emerged that have caused infection outbreaks globally, in which several new antibiotic resistances have entered the species, and in which virulence traits have converged. Comparing genomic hybridization profiles, using a microarray, of strains identified by MLST as spanning the diversity of the species, allowed us to identify the core E. faecalis genome as consisting of an estimated 2057 unique genes

Web application for security guards scheduling

Aplikacija sledi, kdo dostopa do določenih podatkov v sistemu. The thesis aims to present my practical solution to a problem. The company whose core business is the provision of security of facilities invited me to develop a web application that will facilitate and thus optimise the overall deployment of employees. A user can access the application via the login manager. The username and password are to be entered in the login window so that the application gets the information on who is accessing certain data in the system. This assignment covers the area managed by staff members who deploy employees across various facilities. The app is primarily intended for employee schedulers. The system supports the addition of new facilities and new security guards to the system. Once the facility has been entered into the system, a security provision schedule can be assigned, specifying the name of the individual security guard who will be physically present during a specific period of time. The scheduler can also add sick leave and annual leave. Schedules frequently change over time, and the company therefore wanted to split them into months and further into versions, so there can be multiple versions in one month. The highest version means the updated status
