    Food Antimicrobials Nanocarriers

    Get PDF
Natural food antimicrobials are bioactive compounds that inhibit the growth of microorganisms involved in food spoilage or food-borne illness. However, stability issues result in degradation and loss of antimicrobial activity. Nanoencapsulation allows protection of antimicrobial food agents from unfavorable environmental conditions and incompatibilities. Encapsulation of food antimicrobials control delivery increasing the concentration of the antimicrobials in specific areas and the improvement of passive cellular absorption mechanisms resulted in higher antimicrobial activity. This paper reviews the present state of the art of the nanostructures used as food antimicrobial carriers including nanoemulsions, nanoliposomes, nanoparticles, and nanofibers

Background and Objectives. von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder with variable clinical expression. Our aim was to classify patients with vWD and to determine the phenotype in their relatives. Design and Methods. The types and subtypes, blood group frequency and its relevance, bleeding sites, response to the desmopressin (DDAVP) test, transfusion requirements and clinical features in type 1 and 2A families were determined in 1,885 patients. Results. Our findings were: type 1: 91%, type 2A: 3.1%, severe vWD: 1.3%; type 2N: 1.6%; type low intraplatelet: 2.7%; combined 1+2N: 0.3%. Blood group O prevalence was 70.5%. Bleeding and transfusion requirements were not correlated to blood groups. The most frequent symptoms were: ecchymoses-hematomas and epistaxis and, in females over 13 years, also menorrhagia. Normal levels of factor VIII:C were found in 38.4% of the patients. DDAVP was infused in 567 patients with a good response in 80.6%. About 9% of our patients needed transfusion therapy. The diagnosis of von Willebrand’s disease is more likely in subjects belonging to families with type 2A disease than in members of families with type 1 vWD in spite of these being symptomatic. Interpretation and Conclusions. These observations provide a good strategy to identify, classify and treat vWD patients without performing molecular assays.Fil: Woods, Adriana InĂ©s. This guide assists researchers in cataloguing food ingredients by using the Food Label Information Program (FLIP) interface and database. It includes steps for downloading the “Food Collector App” which can scan information (including both text and image) on food labels. A step by step process is outlined for entering the data for compilation and analysis. Examples are provided for tinned food such as fruit and vegetables, and dry food packaging such as cereals

Auxiliary System for Chemical and Production Data Analysis: ANAGEOT

This paper describes a computational tool developed to aid the analysis of chemical, isotopic and production data of geothermal wells. ANAGEOT is an interactive and user-friendly software that allows quickly and efficient manner, modification, retrieval and visualization of the wide amounts of data involved in the study of reservoirs. ANAGEOT optimizes time and resources, due to high quantity of historical data of most of the wells of various petroleum and geothermal fields which involve information sometimes of very long time periods. The system has the flexibility to work with different fields, considering a database for each one A very important feature of this tool is that the reports, charts and graphs are generated in a way which can be edited at any time. Similarly these can be used as source files for other applications, because they are generated in wide commercial use applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Golden Grapher

Micromagnetic simulations of spinel ferrite particles

This paper presents the results of simulations of the magnetization field {\it ac} response (at 22 to 1212 GHz) of various submicron ferrite particles (cylindrical dots). The ferrites in the present simulations have the spinel structure, expressed here by M1−n_{1-n}Znn_{n}Fe2_2O4_4 (where M stands for a divalent metal), and the parameters chosen were the following: (a) for n=0n=0: M = \{ Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Mg, Cu \}; (b) for n=0.1n=0.1: M = \{ Fe, Mg \} (mixed ferrites). These runs represent full 3D micromagnetic (one-particle) ferrite simulations. We find evidences of confined spin waves in all simulations, as well as a complex behavior nearby the main resonance peak in the case of the M = \{ Mg, Cu \} ferrites. A comparison of the n=0n=0 and n=0.1n=0.1 cases for fixed M reveals a significant change in the spectra in M = Mg ferrites, but only a minor change in the M = Fe case. An additional larger scale simulation of a 33 by 33 particle array was performed using similar conditions of the Fe3_3O4_4 (magnetite; n=0n=0, M = Fe) one-particle simulation. We find that the main resonance peak of the Fe3_3O4_4 one-particle simulation is disfigured in the corresponding 3 by 3 particle simulation, indicating the extent to which dipolar interactions are able to affect the main resonance peak in that magnetic compound.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, in press

    FLIP-LAC user guide

This is version 6.4 of the FLIP-LAC manual. The Food Labeling Information Program for Latin America (FLIP-LAC) for data collection and registration is a smartphone-based technology developed by the University of Toronto, Canada. The FLIP iPhone app is meant for quickly capturing a limited amount of information about a food product - most importantly the product barcode and photos of product. Once this information is captured, the data and the photos are later uploaded to the FLIP website where the rest of the data entry can be completed based on photos of the product
