IUE observations of oxygen-rich supernova remnants
The IUE observations were used to determine the composition of the ejecta (especially C and Si abundances) and to test models for the ionization and excitation of the ejecta of two oxygen-rich supernova remnants (N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 1E 0102-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud). Time-dependent photoionization by the EUV and X-ray radiation from 1E 0102-7219 can qualitatively explain its UV and optical line emission, but the density and ionization structures are complex and prevent a unique model from being specified. Many model parameters are poorly constrained, including the time dependence and shape of the ionizing spectrum. Moreover, the models presented are not self-consistent in that the volumes and densities of the optically emitting gas imply optical depths of order unity in the EUV, but absorption of the ionizing radiation was ignored. It is possible that these shortcomings reflect a more fundamental limitation of the model assumptions. It is assumed that the electron velocity distribution is Maxwellian and that the energy deposited by photoionization heats the electrons directly. The 500 eV electrons produced by the Auger process may excite or ionize other ions before they slow down enough to share their energy with other electrons. Many of the excitations would produce photons that could ionize lower ionization stages
The Kinematics of Kepler's Supernova Remnant as revealed by Chandra
I determine the expansion of the supernova remnant of SN1604 (Kepler's
supernova) based on archival Chandra ACIS-S observations made in 2000 and 2006.
The measurements were done in several distinct energy bands, and were made for
the remnant as a whole, and for six individual sectors. The average expansion
parameter indicates that the remnant expands as , but there
are significant differences in different parts of the remnant: the bright
northwestern part expands as , whereas the rest of the
remnant's expansion shows an expansion . The latter is
consistent with an explosion in which the outer part of the ejecta has a
negative power law slope for density () of , or with
an exponential density profile(). The expansion
parameter in the southern region, in conjunction with the shock radius,
indicate a rather low value (<5E50 erg) for the explosion energy of SN1604 for
a distance of 4 kpc. An higher explosion energy is consistent with the results,
if the distance is larger.
The filament in the eastern part of the remnant, which is dominated by X-ray
synchrotron radiation seems to mark a region with a fast shock speed , corresponding to a shock velocity of v= 4200 km/s, for a distance to
SN1604 of 4 kpc. This is consistent with the idea that X-ray synchrotron
emission requires shock velocities in excess of ~2000 km/s.
The X-ray based expansion measurements reported are consistent with results
based on optical and radio measurements, but disagree with previous X-ray

The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy
Recent observational evidence suggests that the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy
represents the only major ongoing accretion event in the Galactic halo,
accounting for the majority of stellar debris identified there. This paper
summarizes the recent discovery of another potential Milky Way accretion event,
the Canis Major dwarf galaxy. This dwarf satellite galaxy is found to lie just
below the Galactic plane and appears to be on an equatorial orbit. Unlike
Sagittarius, which is contributing to the Galactic halo, the location and
eventual demise of Canis Major suggests that it represents a building block of

Correcting the influence of an asymmetric line spread function in 2-degree Field spectrograph data
We investigate the role of asymmetries in the line spread function of the
2-degree field spectrograph and the variations in these asymmetries with the
CCD, the plate, the time of observation and the fibre. A data-reduction
pipeline is developed that takes these deformations into account for the
calibration and cross-correlation of the spectra. We show that, using the
emission lines of calibration lamp observations, we can fit the line spread
function with the sum of two Gaussian functions representing the theoretical
signal and a perturbation of the system. This model is then used to calibrate
the spectra and generate templates by downgrading high resolution spectra.
Thus, we can cross-correlate the observed spectra with templates degraded in
the same way. Our reduction pipeline is tested on real observations and
provides a significant improvement in the accuracy of the radial velocities
obtained. In particular, the systematic errors that were as high as ~20 km/s
when applying the AAO reduction package 2dfDR are now reduced to ~5 km/s. Even
though the 2-degree Field spectrograph is to be decommissioned at the end of
2005, the analysis of archival data and previous studies could be improved by

The use of ERTS-1 multispectral imagery for crop identification in a semi-arid climate
Crop identification using multispectral satellite imagery and multivariate pattern recognition was used to identify wheat accurately in Greeley County, Kansas. A classification accuracy of 97 percent was found for wheat and the wheat estimate in hectares was within 5 percent of the USDA's Statistical Reporting Service estimate for 1973. The multispectral response of cotton and sorghum in Texas was not unique enough to distinguish between them nor to separate them from other cultivated crops

A numerical tool for the optimisation of the scantlings of a ship is extended by considering production cost, weight and moment of iner tia in the objective function. A multi-criteria optimisation of a passenger ship is conducted to illustrate the analysis process. Pareto frontiers are obtained and results are verified with Bureau Veritas rules
