Multiple scattering of matter waves: an analytic model of the refractive index for atomic and molecular gases
We present an analytic model of the refractive index for matter waves
propagating through atomic or molecular gases. The model, which combines a WKB
treatment of the long range attraction with the Fraunhofer model treatment of
the short range repulsion, furnishes a refractive index in compelling agreement
with recent experiments of Jacquey et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 240405 (2007)]
on Li atom matter waves passing through dilute noble gases. We show that the
diffractive contribution, which arises from scattering by a two dimensional
"hard core" of the potential, is essential for obtaining a correct imaginary

Abundant and equipotent founder cells establish and maintain acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
High frequencies of blasts in primary acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) samples have the potential to induce leukaemia and to engraft mice. However, it is unclear how individual ALL cells each contribute to drive leukaemic development in a bulk transplant and the extent to which these blasts vary functionally. We used cellular barcoding as a fate mapping tool to track primograft ALL blasts in vivo. Our results show that high numbers of ALL founder cells contribute at similar frequencies to leukaemic propagation over serial transplants, without any clear evidence of clonal succession. These founder cells also exhibit equal capacity to home and engraft to different organs, although stochastic processes may alter the composition in restrictive niches. Our findings enhance the stochastic stem cell model of ALL by demonstrating equal functional abilities of singular ALL blasts and show that successful treatment strategies must eradicate the entire leukaemic cell population
Hidden symmetries and Killing tensors on curved spaces
Higher order symmetries corresponding to Killing tensors are investigated.
The intimate relation between Killing-Yano tensors and non-standard
supersymmetries is pointed out. In the Dirac theory on curved spaces,
Killing-Yano tensors generate Dirac type operators involved in interesting
algebraic structures as dynamical algebras or even infinite dimensional
algebras or superalgebras. The general results are applied to space-times which
appear in modern studies. One presents the infinite dimensional superalgebra of
Dirac type operators on the 4-dimensional Euclidean Taub-NUT space that can be
seen as a twisted loop algebra. The existence of the conformal Killing-Yano

Role of branched-chain fatty acids in pH stress tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes
In alkaline conditions, Listeria monocytogenes cells develop higher proportions of branched-chain fatty acids (FAs), including more anteiso forms. In acid conditions, the opposite occurs. Reduced growth of pH-sensitive mutants at adverse pH (5.0/9.0) was alleviated by the addition of 2-methylbutyrate (an anteiso-FA precursor), suggesting that anteiso-FAs are important in adaptation to adverse pH. The balance between anteiso- and iso-FAs may be more important than changes in the amounts and/or degrees of saturation of FAs in pH adaptation
On transversally elliptic operators and the quantization of manifolds with -structure

We then describe two "quantizations" of manifolds with -structure that
reduce to familiar methods in symplectic geometry in the case that is a
compatible almost complex structure, and to the contact quantization defined in
\cite{F4} when comes from a contact metric structure. The first is an
index-theoretic approach involving the operator ; for certain group actions
will be transversally elliptic, and using the results in arXiv:0810.0338,
we can give a Riemann-Roch type formula for its index. The second approach uses
an analogue of the polarized sections of a prequantum line bundle, with a CR

Update on the Status of BDSIM
International audienceRecent updates to the status of the BDSIM particle tracking code are presented. In particular, we describe efforts to combine the secondary particle generation of BDSIM with the wakefield calculations of Placet in order to quantify backgrounds from col- limating elements in the beam delivery system of the International Linear Collider. Further recent updates to BDSIM are also introduced
Economic and health outcomes of capsule endoscopy: Opportunities for improved management of the diagnostic process for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding
The estimated annual incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding in the United States is approximately 100 episodes per 100,000 persons, resulting in 300,000 hospitalizations annually. Diagnostic tools such as radiologic studies and endoscopic examination often fail to identify a source of bleeding, resulting in a cycle of repetitive testing over months or even years. Costs associated with the diagnostic process, and with interim treatment for anemia and other symptoms, can be significant. The diagnostic process also takes a toll on the patient, in terms of worry, pain, and discomfort. Capsule endoscopy, a technology that received FDA clearance in August, 2001, consists of a video capsule that is ingested by the patient, and that transmits images to a wireless data recorder worn on the belt. The recorded stream of approximately 50,000 images can be reviewed on a computer workstation by a physician to identify nature and location of potential sources of bleeding. This paper presents a framework for economic analysis of this new technology. First, we present a review of the literature on the current diagnostic methods. Next, we present a conceptual model for examining contributors to costs in diagnosing obscure intestinal bleeds. We conclude by exploring the potential economic impact of the technology. Analysis of data from the first U.S. clinical trial of capsule endoscopy demonstrates its high diagnostic yield, and patient satisfaction. While further study is required, this analysis indicates that capsule endoscopy may reduce total medical utilization and costs and improve patient quality of life, when used for appropriate indications
Beam Profile Measurements and Simulations of the PETRA Laser-Wire
The Laser-wire will be an essential diagnostic tool at the International
Linear Collider. It uses a finely focussed laser beam to measure the transverse
profile of electron bunches by detecting the Compton-scattered photons (or
degraded electrons) downstream of where the laser beam intersects the electron
beam. Such a system has been installed at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, which
uses a piezo-driven mirror to scan the laser-light across the electron beam.
Lat- est results of experimental data taking are presented and compared to
