Site Description for the University of Nebraska's Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory

The Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory is operated by the University of Nebraska. The laboratory is located in the south-central part of the Nebraska Sandhills near Tryon, Nebraska (41 deg. 37' N; 100 deg. 50' W). The laboratory is surrounded on the west and south by native rangeland vegetation, on the south by a large field of corn irrigated by a center pivot, and on the east by wheat stubble. This site is appropriate for moisture stress studies since rainfall is almost always inadequate to meet evaporative demands of agricultural crops during most of the growing season and the sandy soils (Valentine fine sand) at the site do not store large quantities of water. Detection of recessive mutations (BLAD and CVM) in Holstein-friesian cattle population in Republic of Macedonia

BLAD and CVM are Holstein-specific recessive mutations which have had significant economic impact on dairy cattle breeding worldwide. The aim of this study was to optimize a diagnostic test for detection of these two disorders and to obtain a preliminary picture about theire existence in Macedonian HF population. Blood samples were obtained from 84 HF cows from several different farms in Macedonia. Genomic DNA was extracted using DNeasy blood and tissue kit (Qiagen) which was also used for DNA extraction from deeply frozen sperm doses from 6 different HF bulls. Genotyping was performed by PCR-RFLP analysis with TaqI and HaeIII restriction endonucleases for BLAD and with PstI for CVM. The correctness of the genotyping was evaluated by direct sequencing of the amplified products. Among 90 HF cattle tested two cows were identified as carriers of the BLAD allele and one was carrier of the CVM allele. No bulls were found to be carriers of either of the two disorders.This study demonstrates that carriers of BLAD and CVM are present in Macedonia, although at low frequency. PCR followed by RFLP is efficient and inexpensive method for detection of the carriers and should be used as laboratory test in eradication programs. In order to establish a more accurate picture of the prevalence of these disorders, it is necessary to screen a larger number of animals. It is indispensable to test each bull before entering the A.I. program to prevent accidental transmission to a large number of offspring

Het sanctieconcept van het herstelrecht

In deze bijdrage wordt ingegaan op de belangrijke, door de ontwikkeling van het herstelrecht opgeroepen, vraag of het bij het herstelrecht gaat om een werkelijk alternatief voor de straf, of eigenlijk om een alternatieve straf. Deze vraag impliceert een cruciaal debat, want in het laatste geval is het herstelrecht de zoveelste verkapte vorm van strafrecht en dient het zonder meer in het bestaande strafrechtelijke en strafprocesrechtelijke discours te worden ondergebracht, zonder dat de grondslagen daarvan worden geraakt. In het eerste geval gaat het om een ándere (sanctie-)praktijk dan een strafpraktijk, die dan ook op een ándere wijze in de strafrechtspleging zou moeten worden geïncorporeerd, zo men dat als wetgever de moeite waard zou vinden. Het betoog strekt ertoe te laten zien, op analytische gronden, dat het sanctieconcept van het herstelrecht ánders is dan het strafconcept waarop het strafrecht gebaseerd is en dat dit mede te herkennen is in en áán de procedurele uitwerking van dat herstelrecht. Daartoe wordt eerst (§ 1) een profiel van herstelrecht gegeven dat als grondslag dient voor het verdere betoog. Dat profiel geeft aan hoe de auteur het herstelrecht ziet en waar het in het herstelrecht, volgens de auteur, om gaat. Uiteindelijk worden echter het karakter en de betekenis van herstelrecht niet door auteurs, maar door de wetgever bepaald en daarom wordt vervolgens – bij wijze van voorbeeld - Belgische wetgeving beschreven (§2), om daarna in te gaan op de Belgische praktijk van het zogeheten „herstelgericht groepsoverleg‟ als concrete praktijk (§3). Daarmee is dan het decor gezet voor een bespreking van tegenovergestelde opvattingen van Walgrave en Duff over het strafkarakter van het herstelrecht (§4). Deze opvattingen worden nader geanalyseerd en geduid in de voorlaatste paragraaf onder verwijzing naar de Belgische wetgeving en praktijk (§5). In de conclusie wordt tenslotte het sanctieconcept in het herstelrechtelijk denken nader aangeduid als dat van „morele reparatie‟ in een dubbele betekenis

Enkele kenmerken van en condities voor herstelgerichte politiezorg

In 1996 heb ik mijn dissertatie over het abolitionisme van Louk Hulsman afgesloten en verdedigd, met Cyrille Fijnaut als promotor, die mij maximale vrijheid heeft gelaten om mijn gedachten over Hulsmans positie te ontwikkelen. Het is een ingewikkeld proefschrift geworden met de (voorwaardelijke) decriminalisering van euthanasie als exemplarische casus waaraan de uitgangspunten van het abolitionisme getoetst zijn en een slothoofdstuk waarin ik Louk Hulsmans abolitionisme heb verworpen, maar ook veel genuanceerde ideeën die hij naar voren heeft gebracht – na bewerking - heb overgenomen (Blad 1996). Een aantal jaren later ontdekte ik de verwantschap van de denkbeelden die ik zodoende ontwikkeld had met het herstelrechtelijke denken dat zo ongeveer in dezelfde tijd – midden jaren 1990 – Nederland bereikt had...

Herstelrecht en civilisering van de strafrechtspleging

Wordt de strafrechtspleging steeds onbeschaafder en waardoor zou dat komen? Houdt de tendentiële verruwing van het strafrechtelijk ‘bedrijf’ verband met die aanduiding van de institutie van het strafrecht, waarin instrumentele doelmatigheid prevaleert boven waarde-expressie en hoe? Als er sprake lijkt te zijn van een zekere tendens tot decivilisering, in hoeverre en hoe kan het hanteren van herstelrecht dan een bijdrage leveren aan een ommekeer naar meer beschaving in de strafrechtspleging? Kan (her-)beschaving van het strafrecht door inzet van herstelrechtelijke praktijken ook bijdragen aan doelmatigheid? Dit zijn de vragen die in deze bijdrage zullen worden verkend in een poging de intuïtie uit te werken, dat het herstelrecht een beschavingsbeweging voor het strafrecht zou kunnen zij

Application of remote sensing in estimating evapotranspiration in the Platte river basin

A 'resistance model' and a mass transport model for estimating evapotranspiration (ET) were tested on large fields of naturally subirrigated alfalfa. Both models make use of crop canopy temperature data. Temperature data were obtained with an IR thermometer and with leaf thermocouples. A Bowen ratio-energy balance (BREB) model, adjusted to account for underestimation of ET during periods of strong sensible heat advection, was used as the standard against which the resistance and mass transport models were compared. Daily estimates by the resistance model were within 10% of estimates made by the BREB model. Daily estimates by the mass transport model did not agree quite as well. Performance was good on clear and cloudy days and also during periods of non-advection and strong advection of sensible heat. The performance of the mass transport and resistance models was less satisfactory for estimation of fluxes of latent heat for short term periods. Both models tended to overestimate at low LE fluxes

Long term measurement network for FIFE

The objectives were: to obtain selected instruments which were not standard equipment on the Portable Automated Mesometeorological (PAM) and Data Control Platform (DCP) stations; to assist in incorporation of these instruments onto the PAM and DCP stations; to help provide routine maintenance of the instruments; to conduct periodic instrument calibrations; and to repair or replace malfunctioning instruments when possible. All of the objectives were or will be met soon. All instruments and the necessary instrument stands were purchased or made and were available for inclusion on the PAM and DCP stations before the beginning of the IFC-1. Due to problems beyond control, the DCP stations experienced considerable difficulty in becoming operational. To fill some of the gaps caused by the DCP problems, Campbell CR21-X data loggers were installed and the data collected on cassette tapes. Periodic checks of all instruments were made, to maintain data quality, to make necessary adjustments in certain instruments, to replace malfunctioning instruments, and to provide instrument calibration. All instruments will be calibrated before the beginning of the 1988 growing season as soon as the weather permits access to all stations and provides conditions that are not too harsh to work in for extended periods of time

Information om företaget och vad de vill ha av den sökande vill de först ha efter att intresse väckts för att söka arbetet och denna information vill de se på företagets hemsida och inte i platsannonsen. De kanaler som studenterna känner störst förtroende för och anser vara effektivast är även de kanaler som de i första hand vänder sig till. Personliga kontakter är den kanal som de har störst förtroende för, eftersom de anser att det är genom denna kontakt det är störst chans att de får arbete. Den kanal studenterna känner minst förtroende för är rekryteringssajter. Detta beror till stor del på att dessa sidor är för omständliga och tar för lång tid för studenterna att använda. Överlag är det mentala avståndet till handling avgörande för vilken kanal och vilken slags jobb studenten söker
